Saw this on CL tonight. Snap On 6". Did Wilton make vises for Snap On? Seems in good shape for $200, but not if it isnt Wilton. Ive got to hit it hard tomorrow if I want it.

I don't know, but a 6" wilton with a Snap-on stick-on name says it could be a C3. $200 for a C3 is a good deal!

The Snap-On vise is a "relabled" Wilton 1760...I believe...

It's probably worth about $150 to $200 depending on condition...

It is not, repeat NOT, a Wilton 600 series machinist's vise,i.e.---a bullet...

Size difference is shown in photo, below...:thumbup:

Note: The Tradesman in the photo is a 1755 (5 1/2") and the bullet is a 500 (5")...at 6" the size difference would be even more pronounced...

I picked up 8 vises and 4 6" C-clamps brand-new from Lowe's yesterday. Made by Bessey. All were deeply discounted. 4" swivel-base vises were $8 each. 2-3/8" clamp-on was $3.50 each and a vacuum-mount was $3.34. C-clamps were $2.60 each. I got 3 of the 4" for $22, 3 clamp-ons for $10, the vacuum-base for $3.50, a 4" drill press vise for $3, and the C-clamps for $10. All that for about $50. I know the vises are pretty junky but for that price who cares? I might give a few away to some family in need of a vise to abuse. I can use a vise or two for welding or other crappy jobs. The C-clamps will likely be the most useful items of the lot in my shop.

I don't know if Lowe's is clearing out all the Bessey products of this kind in all their stores, but it might be worthwhile checking if you need some of these items. My store had plenty of the clamp-ons, vacuum base, and 4" swivel-base vises. Only had one drill press vise and 6 C-clamps though.

I finished up the painting part of the Reed 104 1/2, I've decided this is the one I'm going to give to my Dad for his birthday / father's day. I haven't decided if I'm going to fill in the letters of the Reed logo in black yet or not. I think I probably will to add some contrast to the other side. I think it turned out looking pretty damn good!

Andrew it looks like your wife finally threw you and your vises out of the house. ( No pictures on the counter top ) I'm sure your Dad would like either the Wilton or the Reed. They both look good !

ALL:Here's a great thread with a member showing how he shipped a 70 pound anvil which is sort of similar to our bigger vises.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=237957&highlight=anvil+shipping

i'm wondering if anybody has a great way to ship a main screw with the handle still attached? and is it cheaper to send a 150 pound vise in two or 3 pieces or just strap it to a pallet?

Andrew:Nice job on the Reed and your Dad should love owning it and a very nice present for any Dad.

Apong:very nice restoration of your Starrett vise and thanks for sharing pictures of the before and after.

Haha, no, I have quite a few of them. The ones on the counter inside is just an overflow before they make it out to the garage!

I've shipped two really heavy items in my life. By that I mean 125 lbs. plus. Both times I used this service;

http://www.shipgreyhound.com/e/pages/Home.aspx

The prices were the cheapest I was able to find anywhere, at the time. You do need to coordinate with the recipient somewhat because this is bus-station to bus-station and they need to go and pick it up in person. It was also fast which is nice.

Andrew, that is looking Great! So is this a factory air operated vise, or did you customize it for air operation? Looks real sleek without the handle sticking out in front!

I sold a guy a Reed once. About three months later he contacted me, angry. He said I should have told him it had a broken part. Come to find out he looked at the locking ring and believed it to be broken in two. (Which it was, but by the factory.) I told him that Reeds ship from the factory like that. He said he didn't believe me and that it was broken and he wanted a new threaded ring. Then I emailed him and asked him to look closely and then to tell me how he would get the new ring in place in one piece. I never heard from him again.

I have been dying to try this out, I know Fastenal has their own shipping trucks because I have them sharpen my cutters and it is trucked to and from Fastenal with no shipping charges added to my order. They also sold me steel from a location in a different state and had it shipped to this store at no extra charge. I just wish they would sell a few screws with out buying the whole package.

Thanks to this post I have abandoned my original plans of separating a 150 lb vise that I bought on eBay into 2 packages and using UPS. The seller has agreed to drop it off at Fastenal and ship it that way, plus it's going to be cheaper than UPS would have been. AND I get to pay for the shipping on the receiving end so I don't have to worry about trying to send the seller the correct amount of money. What a great service, and I'm not worried about having to wait a couple more weeks to get it.

Thanks a lot!

So, armed with all your accumulated knowledge I went to the seller of the Snap On vise. Turns out the seller was a former Snap On rep who retired due to illness. Very nice guy. I got the vise. 15 snap on drill bits, an antique grinder setup AND two of those snap on super magnetic strips for $200.

Vise is gorgeous, it was the truck's vise for repairs. Came with factory copper inserts, the original jaws are as brand new.

I'm planing to sand and repaint. The color depends on who I can get aluminum name pkats from. Snap On, red, Wilton blue.

Vise was manufactured 9/86

Just used this service for the first time last week. Shipped a 400 Chevy engine block from here (Mass) to Louisiana.
They charged him $125, seemed fair, but not a smoking deal.

Any possible wiggle room on this Morgan 50? Asking price is $215. Its in good shape. But price just doesn't seem worth it to me.

http://wichita.craigslist.org/grd/4513873581.html

I'd pass. There's a Morgan 50 on the Chicago CL for $85. I would have picked it up if I hadn't recently bought a Morgan 150 for $50. Keep looking unless you REALLY want it because I doubt he's going to accept half or less of his asking price.

That reminded me of an advert for a lathe I saw on Ebay last year. The seller said he had repaired the cracked retaining ring on the tailstock. Dread to think what shape that tailstock was in by the time he'd done, as he obviously would have had to weld it up insitu, (can't think of any other way he could have 'repaired' it), so that was a factory cracked ring no longer able to be removed as intended, and likely some damage to the spindle at least would have occured.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed near tools, ne'er mind allowed to use them.

Yep, that vise is roughly 2 minutes from my house:

I like Morgan vises, and they are pretty well made, but they don't have the precision of a Wilton or Reed and do not command the high prices. I certainly would not pay that much for a non-swivel vise unless it had some other feature to offset that such as quick-release jaws (ie, Record 23/24/25) or massive size.

$125 must be a common denominator. I had a 300 lbs Di-Acro shear shipped from Maryland to Iowa through Fastenal and it was also $125.

Off to take a look at two vises today.

The first one could be a Parker, Reed or Rock Island or something else. Hard to tell from the one photograph. And it looks like a lot of work.....

Photo attached of the first one.

The second one looks like an Olympia. If so, I think I'll steer clear as per the many comments on GJ concerning quality control. But maybe it's another brand.

Thoughts?

I have read from page 600 to the current page 847, and when I have time, I read all the older pages having started from page 1 and now in the 150’s. Seen a lot of great vises and some nice collections. I know there are many of us looking for an elusive 8-9 inch of the older vise, a few lucky guys have one. An even fewer lucky people have a second or third of these big ones.

But on page 155
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44782&page=155

You scroll down to post #3093, that has to be the largest collection of big iron I have ever seen, absolutely incredible! Like the very next post says “OK, you win”.

Maybe the most incredible thing is that table! He lists 11 of the vise with weights, a quick addition comes to somewhere in the 2700 lb range, but the third photo clearly shows 14 vise, and no bow holding what has to be over 3000 lbs!

Sweet!

lol FMC1959 welcome to GJ! I actually was just lucky enough to pick up my first 8" vise this past week. Better stay out of this thread unless you want to become obsessed, ask me how I know!
