This, but after the acetone dries, I like to hit cast iron parts in particular with a Bernz-O-Matic torch, or leave it in the hot sun for a while and then paint. This gets any subsurface oil/water/you-name-it out, and the paint sticks MUCH better; after that minimal chance for rust to form under the paint. (You can actually SEE th stuff boil out and evaporate off...)

For clean parts you can also preheat in the kitchen oven.

Thanks for the tip. I hit it with the torch prior to the Acetone, and it was definitely interesting to watch...not sure if it was oil or water, but it oozed out of the casting. Going to wipe with acetone and hit it with primer. Looks good right now...

I got that same order a few weeks ago! I encountered a lot of "cannot ship to the following states:….Oregon…" when I was trying to order some on line. I had to special order through the local Lowes as they don't stock it but they did bring in a 6 pack for me.

Outlawmws,

Heating the parts may make the paint stick better, but the water you see from the the torch is coming from the burning propane not the metal.

The result of propane combustion is carbon dioxide and water. When the flame first hits the cold metal some of the water condenses leaving the residue you see. As the metal heats the condensation stops.

I like to bake parts after painting to accelerate the curing process.

Just sayin'.

I've seen cast parts sweat that way in an electric oven too, as well as on bare cast iron engine parts running the engine for the first time. Sure, some may be from the torch, but not all of it. Heating cast iron pasts like that makes the difference between paint peeling and not peeling for engine intake and exhaust manifolds, and even the heads, particularly near the exhaust ports.

I know most of you have never seen a cast iron intake, so that may read weird to you...

Baking after; I agree, sun baked, high intensity lamps, oven (but not your food oven...) all help.

Haha, it's tempting as those 806's weigh in at 159 lbs each. I'm not sure about the 79x but those prices are pretty good. I just dont feel like driving that far as it's roughly 5 hours one way, so the gas cost would be very high.

But that would only be like one hour per vise....:bounce:

There occasionally can be a bit of water trapped in a pit or porous part of cast iron too. It's not uncommon to see a casting weep from a pinhole or two after being painted. I've found that even heating parts quite hot won't always collar all of it, so I don't tend to worry about it too much these days. Once any little drabs remaining dry out naturally, it shouldn't rust any further provided it isn't stored in conditions which promote rust. It would be a non point as such if it were in those conditions, because the rest of the machine would be trying it's damnedest to rust given half a chance anyhows. :D

Picked up this 6" jaw Morgan 60 off CL Wednesday. Jaws are in excellent shape and it was only 10 minutes away from where I work. Weighed right at 128 lbs.

I saw that ad too, but the pic kind of ***** and after googling, they're all fixed base anyway. I wonder where the seller got them from...

Which is the other reason I'm not heading down there, I'm a swivel kind of guy, however, if they were within an hour or two I'd be coming home with a 806 and 79x both are 160 lbs each. They'd be great vises to have on a custom stand, but they just aren't close enough to have to have them. Maybe if he has them in a week or two I'll go get what he has left.

My Lowes always shows them in stock too but in reality they never have it so I gave up. I ordered mine from Amazon. I bought just enough to get free shipping.

Here's an option for Wilton Fans, I just picked up this new Rustoleum color, Rosemary. It is a greenish Hammertone and matches the Wilton color pretty well, plus it is available at Home Depot all the time.

Well, as I had hoped, today was a productive day! Met up with 2 different GJ members to buy these. There was fortunately not a whole lot of horseplay on the ride home, I think the Wilton knew the Parker would eat it for breakfast!

First off, weighing in at 160 lbs a Parker 976, it's in good condition for its age, however it will be needing new jaws and I have to find a Parker #3 wrench, other than that it has all the battle scars you'd expect from a vise this size and old.

Next up, weighing in at... I don't know.. A Wilton 450N which is also is good condition, as usual it's missing the end cap but other than that it appears to be intact and opens / closes smoothly!

All in all, a good day. Now it's time to head to work!

Hell, Bubba, the "Ever Elusive" 5198 is just to look at/display...:bounce:

That's IF I ever find one...:headscrat

My "Ultimate Delusion" is another "Vise Tree" ,with four tiers, one for each of the Craftsman 519X series...All with umpteen coats of hand rubbed "Arrest-Me-Red", and Red-White-Blue stripes on the machined bolts...:drool:

I wouldn't use them...

That's what my Starrett 925 is for...

Note: The my 925 is a "NON" swiveler...

Newest addition...a 9450 from mid 1965. Very well taken care of by its previous owner.

Re: Wilton Model Number

What, if any, is the significance of the "A" in front of the 9450?

That A could be the month that casting was made or if they were coming from different foundries, the location. One beautiful 9450 by the way!
