I had a hutch for a box I no longer own so here's what I came up with, I'm not completely finished, I need to find some trim to clean it up and a rod to go across the bottom to hang the kids wet winter clothing when they come in. The bottom sits about 5 ft off the ground so I haven't lost any floor space.

These are two steel office book shelves that I picked up from a local city government auctioning surplus on govdeals.com. I got the pair for $6, probably because they were missing shelves. I turned them on their sides, painted them to match my recently completed workbench, and mounted them to the wall. I made shelves from some 3/4" x 11-1/4" x 4' mdf boards that were on sale at Home Depot for $.50 ea. Between the bookcases, mdf, paint, hardware and 2x4 frames they are mounted to I have less $20 in the pair. I may yet make and add doors.

-- Sorry for the upside down pics. Odd that they aren't upside down when I view them on my pc before uploading.

Say you wanted to add shelves say for paint cans to this cabinet. How would you tackle that?

Forgot to add the twin to my first cabinet.

This holds all my drills. I used long screws with vinyl tubing slipped over what I wanted sticking out. It makes it non slip so the tools stay put.

I might add something in the door eventually.
Cheers

Hi All,
Prior to insulating my overhead space, decided to add some shelving for the odd parts I have laying in the rafters. Goal was a cost of <$50 including beer.
Success!!
Regards
Jeff

Not necessarily "up" on my walls but I did these a few weeks ago in preparation for some new equipment that I have ordered. I needed to get my metal stock under control as it was strung everywhere. I cut some 4" PVC at different lengths, capped them and mounted them to a 3/4" square tube screwed to the wall. This keeps them spaced out away from the wall the same distance as my base molding yet still allows the PVC tubes to sit on my foundation and support the weight.

Behind my disc/belt sander.

Some longer one mounted behind my drill press.

I hope this will help me to keep my metal stock organized as well as help me to keep a better handle on what I have and what I need when I get low. In the past I had metal anywhere I could store it and when purchasing metal for a project I kept overbuying in fear of running out in the middle of a project. As stock gets smaller/shorter I will move them to shorter and shorter tubes until it gets completely used up.

Mike.

Yeah yeah, shelves look nice. Now on to more important things - what car is that? Looks like a Ferrari (tail lights and wheels), not a 308... Mondial?

We almost had to start a new thread with that one. Neat storage ideas on your ceiling.... LMAO. Nice cabinets

Have a good one, Gerard

Dittle Fart, Thanks for the assist!

Thanks Revamp, Taumac and Stage 20.

Stage20, yes that's a pair of Harbor Freight 4 drawer carts merged into one. I've been meaning to post pics and description to the Harbor Freight cart mods thread. I will soon. Love that thing.

Revamp, I posted some pics and a better description of the bench with some in process pics in a couple of the workbench threads. I recently built the bench. I plan on building 2 more similar ones that will end up lining most of that wall. Though the other two might not be as fancy and finished as that one. The fit and finish stuff on that one took the most time. The top is 5/8" bamboo flooring from Home Depot over 5/8" OSB. I was worried that there might be a little bit of spring when banging on it, and there was before getting everything all nailed down, but once it was all finished it was really solid. I have no idea how much it weighs but it takes me putting all my weight behind it (220 lbs) to get it to budge an inch at a time. It's made of 16 2x4's, 3 sheets of OSB, 3 sheets of Luan plywood to cover front and sides, the bamboo flooring top, and a bunch of 1x4s and other stuff for trim. The drawers in the bottom middle were taken from an older 80s steel teacher-style desk that I bought for $20 at a garage sale.

Hi guys, I'm new to garagejournal. I joined specifically because I found this thread. I love the ideas and had to subscribe. Here is mine. I built a bench that I would need to use a lot of different things which would have to be secured but didn't want to bolt things down to the bench so I couldn't use it for anything else.

I secure the tools to an insert that slides into the front of the bench like this.

[/IMG]

Then I store the tools I'm not using along the side of the bench like this.

[/IMG]

When I want to clear it off to use a nice clean flat work bench I just slide in a blank insert.

The system works great. Any time I get a new tool I need to mount I just make a new blank insert and tie it to that. I use this stuff for reloading but it works just as well with bench grinders, bench vise, etc.

I really like your ideas above! I may borrow this for my reloading bench. Thanks for sharing!!!

Very ingenious, and well executed! What was the inspiration for your design?

I won't say my shed is as neat as some here, mainly because I have a tremendous amount of stuff in there. But I know where everything is.

Very nice setup. Packs a lot of storage for things that are readily accessible in a well-organized, compact area. I need to do something similar to one wall of a utility room at the rear of my house.

(1) Is the construction 2X4's with carriage bolts?
(2) How deep did you decide the shelves would be?

Oh, I am totally borrowing this idea to hang my cordless tools. That's pretty brilliant. What size is the pipe?

It depends on the size of your cordless tools. I used 3-inch PVC for my 10.2V Flex drill, driver and light but 4-inch for my air impact wrenches (added some 3/16" strapping for extra support).

The HF Earthquake impact weighs 6 pounds so I don't think the 4-inch PVC drain pipe (it's foam with PVC sheathing) will hold it up by itself. I recently threw out a garden shelf unit but saved the 1/4" x 1/2" steel straps from its frame. I bent the strap into a curve using a vise with the jaws open about 3/4-inch. It wasn't long enough to surround the two pipes but there was four inches more than I needed to retain them so that piece became the spacers for the front and rear mounting screws. Now that I know it works I'll have to take it down and paint everything white so it doesn't rust.

This is on the back wall of my Silverado crew cab. In my gen truck (an '04), the seat bottoms fold forward and the seat backs fold down. Behind them are 3 child seat anchors, which I stared at for a while to try & figure a use for. At a farm auction I picked up a stainless bin (5"x5"x60") for $3. Welded up 2 hangers, used large 3/8" toggles and it hangs there neatly; doesn't move. I do have to remove it to use the seats, but that's like twice a year at most. Holds drill boxes, screw/nails, all sorts of smalls that otherwise would be fighting for space among the larger contractor tools. Best $3 I spent for work in 10 years.

I'm still trying to get my garage organized. I've added several storage things but seem to haul **** home quicker than I can expand storage.

My intent was to get everything up off the floor and on the walls or in cabinets (except machines, large items) so I have focused a lot of time on storage, but it is never enough.

Ain't it the truth? I have finally decided that when I have too much stuff for my storage to accommodate it, then I just plain have too much Sh....tuff. I am taking a bunch of stuff to an auction house to get rid of it all at one time.
