The nutdrivers look like Klein.
i think those might be stanley. they are showing more of the yellow of the handle than the kleins do, or maybe im just crazy. i have some stanley screwdrivers and some kleins and i think my kleins are larger in size(the plastic) at the shaft. both have similar rubber covers.

Hit the same estate as yesterday, found some more Bell System stuff:
IMG_8697.JPG

And then I got word from alinc that he was going through some toolboxes and this is what he let me find when I finally got there. The stuff on the left was a trade with him, the stuff on the right was the sale. Should have looked over the holders of sockets better, after I sorted them I had less than I thought. Left row are empty boxes and all snap-on, the first socket holder is all snap-on, the right holder is half companion USA and the other half craftsman, the stuff along the top is all sorts of stuff (New Britian, SK, Indestro, etc).

Dang good grab on the waterlox. Great stuff for stock finishing. [emoji106]

Good deal. What is that bit ratchet looking thing?
Its a ratcheting refrigeration wrench. No idea why it was in with his tools but I'll take it!

A few finds from last week.

Got this cool metal card box from Goodwill for 3 or 4 dollars. Ended up being the perfect size for my cheapo HF grinder.

Took a weekday trip to the flea market with the little human and dug through a few tools while she dug in the dirt and threw rocks.

Seller 1:

The Craftsman wrenches were a buck a piece so I grabbed all of the good ones. I needed one or 2 for myself and the rest are going to sets that I'm putting together. The drivers were $1 each and the Proto Challenger ratchet was $3

photo1_zpsf2c688b3.jpg

Seller 2:

The Craftsman tap handle, Miller Falls 6" rule (favorite find of the day), Nicholson USA file & piece of hardened steel were all in the $1 bin (my go-to bin most of the time). The cleco pliers were in with the $3 tools and although the seller wasn't sure what they were for, I was pretty confident in the fact that they were for clecos so I gave them a shot. Turned out I was right.

photo2_zps092b00f0.jpg

Seller 3:

Among piles and piles of costume jewelry I noticed a clear plastic, divided case with a bunch of used taps and twist drills. Found these mixed in. $2 total.

photo3_zps569163d0.jpg

Then there's this Kennedy box that I picked up on eBay. It was a local(ish) pick up about an hour away from me. I kinda took a chance on it since the pictures the seller posted were duplicates of themselves so I had no idea what (if anything) was in more than half of the drawers. Ended up having some pretty neat stuff inside. Looks like the guy was into electronics of some sort. Found more precision tweezers than I could use in a lifetime lol. Some of the stuff I still have yet to identify (like that caliper looking thing on the bottom right). Total for the box and it's contents was $100. Not a steal by any means, but I really wanted the box for myself and I'll probably sell off some of the stuff to recoup a portion of my money.

Anyone have any idea what these greenish things on the bottom with the notches are?

What exactly is this? I cleaned it in EOR and the part with the measurements is made of brass. Can get better pics later.

photo2_zpsb455471a.jpg

Nice little bottom drawer find. Also found the v-block and clamp in there.

photo3_zps81ce1bb8.jpg

That's all for now.

Thanks!

Wow, quite the haul!
I think you have enough tweezers for a few lifetimes!

Thanks! Funny thing is that "Machinist's Practical Guide" next to the tweezers. I just bought one last week for like $7 off eBay and then I find another 2 of them in this box :lol_hitti

I also found twist drills that were about as thin as a piece of fishing line. I have absolutely no idea what they would be used for or how you would even hold them.

First stop - $8
200 Utility blades
2 air chucks(one not pictured)
mostly full box of earplugs
Giant roll of green nametags(plan to use these to price things)

Second stop - $1
Cresent fencing pliers. Looks old and the markings are unlike any I have been able to find. In really nice shape. Picture doesn't do them justice.
hd felt furniture pads

Third stop - $2
wright 3400 3/8 ratchet
channellock 422 Any one have an idea how old this one is? The bussiness end is different than the ones I have found online. Curved not v shaped like the current ones. I think it had the trademark blue handles because the logo and other stampings are above the handles. Any thoughts on value? Yes, I tried to search.
proto 5438 1/2 drive 1-3/16
proto 7436 1/2 drive 1-1/8
I'm a little confused on this last one. The part number shows it to be an impact socket but it looks like none that I have ever seen. It is not black for one and the drive end is a little beat up like how a chrome socket that has been used on an impact gun. Any thoughts?

Picked up this Action 1/4 drive set today...MFD. USA...i had never heard of them, Alloy Artifacts says it was an economy brand of Thorsen. The ratchet has an exposed pawl that also acts as selector. Despite the archaic design, I like how svelte feeling it is, and also how it feels to use. Also came with a 1/4 breaker bar, a 6" extension, and sockets in 6 and 8 point. $5

Next up is this Mac V24SF breaker bar for $20 + rebuild kit $12.

Lastly, a NOS Bonney 32x30mm DOE $2.

Good score Mike. You use a pin vice to hold those little drills. They often look like an exacto knife handle usually but they also come in many shapes and sizes.

Thank you 2oolhound!

I've heard "pin vise" mentioned before, but I've yet to come across one myself. I'll be sure to keep an eye out

Ah, so these are "swivel head" pin vises in the top center.

One of them is a Starrett. I thought they were little file holders but it seems like they do more than that :rocker:

Mike, they also make high speed miniature drill presses for the numbered drills you have. these will often go to 10.000 RPM or higher. Common numbered sets go from 1-60, 60 being the smallest, but you can get even smaller at least to No. 80. I have a racked partial extended set those sizes, 61-80, plus a full set from, 1-80

Dave, Thorsen made those exposed gear ratchets in both Thorsen and Action, and I'm pretty sure the only difference besides the stamped name, was the warranty. Nice finds!

The "rebuild kit" was for what? The breaker?

Good scores, guys!
I have been out of the action for awhile (too busy) but I could not resist an estate sale this past week on my way home. Scored everything but the pocketknives for $4 (dog dishes look like new, my garage dog will appreciate), and paid $7 for the two pocketknives. Not bad.

We cruised around for 2.5 hrs this morning and only came home with a Readers Digest hard cover book, a casserole dish and a free Sony home stereo that was a few drives down from a garage sale we stopped at. Lots of nothing this weekend...

Hope you guys do better than we did.

Hit a privately listed/by appointment sale last night after work. There was a large volume in a small space . There is still quite a bit left but me and Jery managed to get the cherries out,or atleast most of them anyhow.
The guy wanted $1500 for the entire contents which would be a fair price if I had an outlet for the stuff I didn't want like a booth at a flea or a large garage sale of which I don't have the time nor space to handle it all right now.
So just cherries it is:
First the pliers:
makers like Ideal,Petersen VG,Channellock
001 (Large).jpg

002 (Large).jpg

Next was wrenches which are all Snap On SAE with the exception of The Proto LA line wrench, the Plvmb obstruction wrench, a Craftsman line wrench and one Williams wrench:
003 (Large).jpg
004 (Large).jpg
005 (Large).jpg
006 (Large).jpg

continued next post

Them came the sockets ,ratchets, drive bars, breaker bars and extensions:
008 (Large).jpg

009 (Large).jpg

010 (Large).jpg

011 (Large).jpg

012 (Large).jpg

013 (Large).jpg

Ratchets are all Snap On along with a Williams S-52 Superratchet
Sockets are a mix of Snap On ,Craftsman, Williams, Indestro ,SK ,one Cornwell and some Companion sockets for the loaner box.

Total spent was $325. Little more than I hoped but it should all flip well EXCEPT for the PLVMB/PROTO Los Angeles items which are definitly going in my collection.

Picked up a pretty nice Snap On SSD 480 for $1.00 and a bunch of vintage pottery for the wife. And some donuts.

Nothing else really caught my eye.

Well there was supposed to be an estate auction this morning but when we got there, there was no one there so this afternoon I'm checking CL and see the address in the Free section mentioning contents of storage room by curb. We go by there again and this time there is a bunch of **** on the side of the road, I filled up the van. Pics later, lots of old fishing stuff, couple jack stands, gotta dig through the boxes when it cools off some.

Good little haul at the local flea market this morning. More USA-made goodness saved for future generations to marvel at and say "wow, we made stuff here?"

pic 1: all for $3
Armstrong 908 1-1/2-inch spud wrench
Proto 5449 1/2-drive ratchet, a bit beat up but works okay
Proto LA tappet wrench, 7/16 and 1/2

pic 2: $15
Campbell Hausfeld 1/2-inch impact wrench. I almost never buy foreign made tools, this is an exception, simply because it's hard to find any USA-made air tools anymore for a good price even used

pic 3: all for $12
US Gauge air pressure gauge, cracked face but I can cut new glass
pair of Craftsman USA 3/4-inch drive sockets
old Coke bottle

pic 4-5: all for $6
Craftsman lineman's pliers, bit driver, lot of 10 Xcelite nutdrivers, Schlitz bottle opener, a Black & Decker drill chuck, two small DOE wrenches (Bridgeport and Renault), a pair of unknown pliers (only marking is RSUa150 on both sides of the handle), and what appears to be a Snell & Atherton salesman gauge used to measure the leather thickness of the soles of shoes.

pic 6-7: only $1
metal drill index, no markings but well made. Came with a free bit! :)

Surprised by how much there was when it was all laid out, I'll have to try the whole bunch of stuff in a bag negotiation technique next time.

The "rebuild kit" was for what? The breaker?

Outlaw, thank you! I like that little ratchet a lot, but are they serviceable? It has a sheet metal C-clip that covers the head, but I have no idea how the drive gear could come out after I looked at it.

Yes, the rebuild kit was for the Mac breaker bar...when I bought it, the drive end was very loose and the drive square itself had been twisted about 30 degrees from where it should be. The rebuild fixed all that. Not too shabby for a bar that listed over $100 on Mac's site!

Went to my first ever garage sale in my adult life today. Ended up with a sears/craftsman dial indicator that looks brand new and two coil air hoses for $20.

then went drove around stopping at a couple more sales. Only brought from one other seller. Got 2 small tins to put carb parts in while I clean them for 20 cents. And 2 metal cabinets which I plan to put spray paint and other cans in for $5

Then I saw a key cutting machine so in the corner so I asked about it. Waited for the ladys husband to get home and ended up getting it for $125. It's a Curtis 2000k. I didn't need it but I wanted it and happen to have cash in my pocket for once :lol_hitti

Then on my way home I found a reed pipe vise and a bottle of nitrogen in the road

Didn't go to the beach this weekend so I thought I would hit up some yard sales as early as I could get out today. Turns out there was nothing with any potential in the area so I figured I would just go hit up the local FM nice and early before it gets too crowded. As I'm getting there it's starting to lightly rain and I can see a lot of the sellers packing up and the majority of things covered with tarps and clear plastic sheets. Since I was there already I figured I'd take a look around.

I had my daughter with me again so I wasn't looking to go crazy digging under tarps in the rain. I was looking for a box of some sort that I could grab and go. About 3/4 down the first row I spot a gray plastic Stack On box and I open it to find a bunch of miscellaneous sockets. When I looked for the seller it turned out he was in the bathroom. I decided to take a quick lap to see what else was around. I spotted the 1-2-3 blocks an isle over and for $7 I was happy to call them mine.

photo1_zps65e01825.jpg

The rain definitely didn't seem like it was letting up so I went back to see if the first seller was around and he was. When I asked him how much he was looking to get for the sockets he told me I could have the whole box for $30. I saw a few pieces I liked, a few pieces that I needed, and a few pieces that I could sell so I agreed to the price. He also pulled back his tarp to show me a cigar box full of Williams sockets and a partial set of Craftsman 1/2" =V= in a metal Snap On tray. At $10 each for a total of $50 I took my stuff and called it a day.

photo2_zps8c3779b9.jpg

In hindsight I could have done without the Williams sockets since some of them are actually hex key holders that don't actually have the hex key parts in them. There was a 1/4" Snap On extension and a brand new Craftsman adjustable wrench in the box too so I guess I can't complain.

The 1/2" deep Cman sockets are =V= along with a few 3/8", some misc 1/2" shallow and a 1/2" extension. There are some of my very first Cman BE sockets in there too! There's a set of 1/4" shallow metric, 1/4" shallow & deep SAE, an Indestro 1/4" breaker, some Proto Challenger sockets, SK, Herbrand, Billings, 1 Matco & all the Williams stuff is at the bottom left.

On a side note, I could really go for a donut right now and it's so random that you bout a key machine at one of your first yard sales, Red_Bull

Two more sales today after selling a table saw for a $450 profit today at 12:00
Estate sale netted me a Goodell-Pratt push drill with all but one bit. Usually teh bits are long gone and they are a different style than the Stanley push drills.
A set of Jenning's pattern drill bits for a hand brace
Total at that stop was $14.00

025 (Medium).jpg
024 (Medium).jpg

Next stop was a CL ad for a Wilton Baby Bullet vise. It is in seemingly good shape so I bought it for $150 and a WWII era Schwinn Bicycle badge I had found in a toolbox clean out a couple weekends ago.

My hunt today was marginally better than yesterday, at least I didn't have to stand in line for hours this time. I went to 3 stops and a TOO. The first two stops lied about having tools, so that and the TOO were a waste of time (and gas). The third stop was at a "cleanout" company that holds a garage sale several times a year. It's the same place that had Kennedy 520's for $10ea last summer (I'm still kicking myself that I didn't clear all of them out for parts when I had the chance). It turns out that the tool section belongs to someone else that shares their warehouse space. He wasn't there today, and had already cleared out his tools last year. So, no joy.

The only thing I found was a pair of pliers for $1.

Normally I wouldn't take so many pictures of a pair of pliers, but these were odd enough that I had to have them. The pliers have a pair of off-set jaws. The overall length is 7". The maker's stamp is faint, and only showed up under a magnifying glass after I wire wheeled the area. The letters highlighted in red where too faint to read and are guesses. The stamp reads :

_______THE HD SMITH & CO
_______PLANTSVILLE CONN
_______PAT JUNE 9 - 1914
_______MADE IN USA

The action was sloppy. After lightly cleaning with the wire wheel, to keep some age on them, I was able to give the nut a 1/2 turn to tighten them up. They actually have a nice feel to them now.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. Not quite sure which box to tick on today's calendar. :dunno:

I went to two sales today - the first had TOOLS on the yard sign and did not disappoint. For 25 bucks here's what I got:

pocket screwdriver
2 centerpunches
Blue point 1618 DOE
Williams 1/2" combination wrench
SK 5/8" combination wrench
Panduit tie wrap gun
Indestro tap wrench
Craftsman 3/8 ratchet, needs a rebuild kit
not pictured - Stanley 8' tape

Second sale was a car dealership equipment sale. Originally they were a Chevy dealer, lost their franchise and sold used cars, then housed an Infiniti dealership for a year while they built a new building. Now the used car people are moving out and a Tesla dealer is moving in, the whole place is being remodeled.
I did not buy anything - but there was shelving, workbenches, tire and car wash equipment, GM dealer tools and service manuals, several Curtis clippers for older car keys, GM pin kits and keyblanks, and lots of junk. Not sure why they did not just have an auction, I think a lot of stuff will be trashed.

First estate sale was private. Make a pile and negotiate. These are part of the $50 negotiated pile:

The SK and Urrea 1/2" ratchets look brand new:

Fron another estate sale but run by professionals. Dual range Variac for $12 and like new CM USA tap and die set $25. (logos look like Vermont America):

Outlaw, thank you! I like that little ratchet a lot, but are they serviceable? It has a sheet metal C-clip that covers the head, but I have no idea how the drive gear could come out after I looked at it.

Semi Serviceable:

Thorsen is long gone, so no kits available that I know of, but it's pretty basic and very bullet proof. That sheet spring cover will pop off and everything is accessible enough to get it cleaned and lubed.

I have that style in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" in T/A, and in 3/4" in P&C (no cover, the thing is a brute), which was my Dad's.

Lots of good stuff!
First stop: Tool sale. I suspect it's a guy or a family selling off stuff a little at a time.

Craftsman Crown hack saw frame, Snap-On 1-7/16" Heavy Duty Boxocket, Armstrong pliers, 2 pair of Craftsman pliers, a Snap-On 5/8" Drive (!) Impact Universal with a 1961 date code (didn't realize they made 5/8" drive so late), the first row of bit sockets is Craftsman (2 are =v=), the second row is SO, and the last row is SK.

Second stop was a bust, third stop advertised "old tools". This is what I found:

Yankee Driver with bits in its original box, Herbrand battery pliers (why are these so common when Herbrand in general is rare?), Utica Button's pattern pliers (AA dates this pair to 1910-13), Craftsman Crown Molding set with 3 of the cutter sets, Bonney Zenel DOE, and an old Blackhawk socket with a cross-bar jammed in it.

That's it for the tools today. Going to hit up a flea market in the morning.
