Just received a small set of snap on sockets today that I purchased from ebay. The auction listed them as new without package and no mention of owners markings. They all have the marking AFW-NC on them. But it Is not your typical owners engravings it is later printed into the sockets. Anyone have any idea what that is? The sockets themselves are new so I don't think they would be owners markings

Could be military. AFW-NC strikes a bell for being military. Could be the department then the persons initials.

Let me throw another wrench into the works......my understanding is if they are sold to US Govt....there is no warranty..........could be wrong....but that's my understanding.

You paid new price?
I would need to know what you paid verses list to know and I am assuming you are not saying you paid full list price.
If it was me it would need to be 50% or less as if they are military markings then there is no warranty available on them

It might matter if you plan to sell them.

The seller may have not known or considered those to be id markings, or they may have not disclosed that purposely.

Who knows.

I'd say anything should be expected when buying something out of the package.

Why would anyone pay full price from somewhere that's not an official sales channel anyway?

You mean, you paid the first asking price then I suppose.

Sorry for the confusion. What I should have said is I paid about what all the other new sets on ebay were going for. Not retail new. The sets with owners markings in ebay were selling for less

Kind of true, snap on warrantied all of our tools when I was in the Air Force, but snap on does not warranty tools for anyone other than the original purchaser, technically. So any snap on bought off of ebay, mil surplus n.i.b. or other, should be bought with the assumption that it cannot be warrantied, although whether they ask you for proof of purchase or not is hit and miss.

and the guy just sent me a message saying that they are not govt surplus. he said anyone can request personal etchings from the dealer at time of purchase and these were etched with the wrong letters thats why they were returned.

I have never heard of this

That's true. Right in the catalog they offer laser etching.

I say if the guy knew those etchings were on there and didn't tell or show it in pictures then he's a bum. Plain and simple....

Are wild guesses allowed?

Air Force weather station Asheville North Carolina. AFW is a std abbreviation.

More wild speculation: I think there's a chance you are in possession of stolen govt property. I would return them. Used snap on in new condition are typically 50 -75% of retail. No reason to stick it out with this item.

^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^

Tell the seller that if he can't provide proof of ownership, then you will report him to ebay on the grounds that the markings were not disclosed in the listing and for selling suspected stolen property. That should get his attention. Demand a full refund, including shipping both ways.

You're not out of luck if you suspect they are stolen. Call paypal or ebay and talk to someone directly (don't just file a claim) and it will be easily resolved.

Also, if you paid through paypal with a credit card, it should be easy to contact your credit card company, explain the situation, and get a chargeback.

I would file a claim anyways, he was deceptive in not taking any pictures of the markings. Ebay/Paypal will side with you. I am also saying this as a seller on ebay, if I had those sockets I would have made sure to show the etchings.

291208447234 is the item number
Looks like I'm out of luck the disclaimer said the picture may be a stock photo. Looks like he's an *** but he is clever and knows how to get around things. Oh well guess I should have never bought them after seeing that but when I saw them listed as new without package I figured that's exactly what they were

Few things. Yes, he did cover his bases with the disclaimers.

Are the sockets new and unused in your opinion? (Other than the etching.)

He does state that the tools have no issues. There is no getting around the fact that owner identification markings are an issue and I think this is the transaction's undoing.

You can still file an Item Not As Described case with eBay and explain your side of things. I believe not stating the items were marked warrants this action and eBay consistently falls on the side of the buyer in these types of claims. In my opinion they will likely see things your way and allow you to return them if that's what you wish to do.

I would also leave him neutral feedback alerting the others to the possibility of receiving owner etched tools.

This is just my opinion, of course you do what you think is correct.

If it's anything like the Craftsman laser etchings, they'll be gone in a month anyways.

I'd just use 'em.

I would file a claim with eBay , they generally favour the buyer , disclaimers like that are too vague to be legally binding , pretty sure it should be worded that " in buying these items you agree to these terms "

But if the sockets were cheap enough or the seller will do a partial refund , take the money and drink beer
Or just use them , mark it down as learning lesson to be a bit more savvy when you see blanket disclaimers on eBay listings

Thanks for all the help guys. Not sure if I'm even going to bother going through everything to file a complaint, just didn't like that everything wasn't disclosed in the auction and he was clearly trying to dodge around the issue in the auction. And just last week I purchased a different set that came missing a socket and the seller basically said oops I listed the auction wrong it didn't actually include that, oh well.... What happened to honest and up front people??

You'll continue to be taken advantage of until you do something about it.
