I wish you and wallster hadn't reminded me about the COE
It is still sitting on the lift waiting for some attention
I hope to fall back into that project soon

Thanks for the compliments guys
And thanks to all who have looked in on the progress of the party garage

A few weeks ago I went on a road trip to Missouri to pick up a new sign for the party garage and have been plugging away at getting it ready to put up.

While grinding and sanding to remove the old paint and rust. I took time out to dig a hole and pour cement in it for the base of the pole

The post is in the booth primed and painted

Next is the sign frame. It is so heavy that I'm still trying to figure out how to hang it for priming and painting. May have to use the fork lift and paint it out side ???

Ah my addiction has been fed. Thanks for posting.
It would be nice to be able to drive the country to find those types of items. Up here it is a little more difficult, but our local picker (who I get a lot of things from) told me there was a dealer / distributor for gas pumps that dated back to the 50's. They had some pumps that were simply tagged for the crusher. He saved a couple of them. Rough condition but restore-able.
Is that your sewer line under the concrete pad your poured?

Don, with such a heavy top section, did you have to calculate wind load for the foundation? (I see you stubbed in the conduit before pouring the concrete, pretty slick mister!)

What you see in the hole is the 6" drain pipe for the rain gutter on the west side of the party garage and a 4" drain for the side yard all going to the front street curb when it rains I fill the street quickly. Fortunately The other side of the street is a flood basin.

Yes Wally

I considered the wind factor and the hole is a 4X4X4 hole that holds aver 1 yard of concrete I also pounded in 4 6'X5/8 rebar before pouring. If thats not enough OH WELL (no professional calcs)

Maybe I missed it somewhere but still curious as how you found the Sinclair pole and sign?
On the hole for the sign, I think that's what I had done on my signs, except I think I went with 5' depth by 4 X 4. I don't think you get the winds like I do out here on top of a hill. My signs are still standing, and this year we had winds like 70mph a few times. Like the scallops on the base of the pole, looks like grass for the Dino to roam thru:lol:

I did not get them. They are just like the one I have but in poorer condition.
But I may get one for parts since I can not find a 4 digit Tokheim 300 price plate. They are all 3 digits. Fuel up here has always been high.

I found the sign on ebay and it was a buy it now or make an offer, So I made am offer and they excepted it. then I found out it was in Missouri so another road trip was scheduled and while I was there I found a 24' neon sinclair sign that was shipped out later because it was still hanging when I found it.

I'm not too worried about the pole sign tipping over just not sure how I'm going to stand it up yet

The fork lift would crush the lower door seal if I drive over it. It is a metal piece that stands about 2 inches high

Yeh I typed in my name (Don Long place) and found that someone is selling pic,s of my garage NOT HAPPY about that.

Don,

What an amazing garage. So impressed. It's obvious you enjoy what you are doing and so nice that you share your passion with others.

I live in the Kansas City area and have seen a few places in this part of the country that you might be interested in. I'd be happy to send you some photos if you'd send me your email. No spam! I promise! Also, if there is something in the area that you'd like me check out for you, I'd be happy to do it. Who knows, someday I might get out to CA for a visit.

Don,

To paint the top of the sign, can you park the forklift at the door of the paint booth with the sign frame hanging from the forks inside the booth? You may be able to seal the door opening with plastic film. Just an idea.... Great looking shop. I love the old signs.

Thanks TC for the suggestion

Because of the height of the sign frame and how high the fork lift mast would be I don't think it will fit into the garage suspended, but there may be a way to lift it from the bottom of the sign. I'll keep you posted

Don, For the paint booth lower door seal, what about a couple 2x4's on either side to protect the seal? I can't find a photo of a garden hose with wood blocks, but something like this, but in wood...

BTW, I love the scallops!

put a couple of long bolts in the holes and use a cherry picker, it will be upside down but should work?

That is a good approach if the forklift will clear the door opening when loaded

BugThug you may have the winning plan
The bottom is what will be seen when the frame sits on the pole

Well Lee Thanks

I'm not sure just what it is the food or signs but the place is like a magnet for hot rods.
The Sinclair pole sign was put on hold this week while I worked on another project

Just checking in Don, I can only echo Lee's comments above, well done and thanks for posting.

It's a 24 ft 3 piece Neon sign I found while chasing down my sinclair pole sign in Missouri
It was shipped out and I recieved it on Monday. I couldn't wait to get it up and lit and the neon buddy of mine was able to get The neon made and it ready to hang this morning
It took all day and into the evening to get it up and lit only to find the letter "I" not working

I'm sure your neon buddy checked out the GTO wire, glass housings, etc so it's probably just a bad piece of neon, we run into this all the time. Your buddy can check out the faulty piece and make another. We pay about $50. for a piece of neon that size. At least they'll be able to match the color since it was just made. Sign looks great up there, your place is amazing, I love everything you do to it.

Well at least there is NO "I" in team work, I always wanted to say that:rocker:
I have a sign just like that but its missing all its neon, I glad you have a friend that does neon, or it might be a small fortune it getting it fixed.
What did you use to hang it on? looks like 3" angle?

You are right on. The guy took the letter and said it was a bad glass and he will be back out monday to touch up the wires and caps.
Thanks for your kind thoughts. I always enjoy your visits

don

What a great addition to your "autoseum".
I thought all neon signs had at least one letter out or missing.

Thanks Ak

I think that you are correct. That's how I met and became good friends with this guy.

Hey Herb

Do you have your sign displayed somewhere??
"I" was sure part of the team yesterday and the way I know that is by how tired i am still today LOL

You asked what it is hanging on! Well I started with a 2" angle 23'6" drilled 3/8 holes every 24" in the angle, then on the inside of the building I screwed 2x4s to the horizontal support beam, then I drilled a 3/8 hole in the center of the 2x4 and through the building and bolted the angle through the wall, leveled and drilled the rest of the holes and bolted it solid to the wall.
I also drilled 1 & 1/8 holes for the neon wires and used pvc connectors as insulators thru the wall and we mounted the transformers to the 2x4s inside the building

Man did I score today :rocker::rocker::rocker:

The holy grail of old floor jacks.

I went to a car show up in big bear today and on the way home I took the back road out of town and stopped by a friend of a friends place and looked at a load of antique stuff. Old juke boxes, coal burning stoves, Model "A"s, cash registers and pinball machines. I was with my friend and he bought a box of matching license plates (50 pairs) from 1934 All in numerical sequence with the same prefix letters

Well as we were leaving my buddy asked his friend if he wanted to sell this old walker manual 1/2 ton floor jack floor jack (for me) He said not for my price unless I wanted to buy a bigger one also. I asked what he had and he showed me a steering jack I said you don't happen to have an old black hawk do you
He thought for a moment and said you mean the one with a key in the handle

I said Yep thats the one. He said that it was aluminum and not worth much
I jumped at it

r7u71y.jpg

I'm so happy!!!! I couldn't wait to share it
I think that it finishes off my collection

NO my Sinclair sign is in my barn leaning against the wall. That is (3) pieces of heavy metal there.
I found mine from a old man that was selling vegetables on the side of the road. The three pieces were turned backwards and painted tan with house paint. He had the prices wrote on the signs backside. After I seen the front side, and it was a sign, in 3 parts I ask him if the sign was for sale? He said yeah, but you have to buy all three piece's! I said "how much"? He said $10.00 per section, I said "SOLD". One section has a small crease in it, it hasn't bothered the porcelain, but I don't think I can fix it:(

Today I got a little closer to getting up my Sinclair pole sign

The post is painted and standing on its footing
The sign frame went into the booth via 4 guys and the lower portion was painted white so I could continue the scallop design for the top of the pole
then it was masked off and the back side was painted green. Then I flipped it over and gave the front 3 coats of single stage paint

now that the paint is dry I worked on pulling new wire through the tube in the back side of the frame for lights to shine on the sign later

Todays progress
