I appreciate the comments and yes you are correct, something will come my way. It's amazing how rare items crosses ones path again.

Not sure what you mean by things turn up around here. Do you mean vises come up for sale on GJ? I never tried buying a vise off Gj, I've only asked half joking but nothing so far.

A small Chas Parker like a 972 or a small Prentiss would be great. A small Woden would also be great. I actually have a use for it.

And in case someone has a Swinden just laying around needing a new home, Let me know.

The first pic with the Morgan 80, Prentiss 58, Reed 207 & Yost 207, add your Stars & Stripes, I figure you should be in the 1100 lbs, or more; aside from Demoman, I wonder if anyone could challenge you, maybe VA?

Here's the Sawyers---Tom Jr. and Tom the 3rd.---Jr. weighs 154.6 lbs. with 6 inch jaws and Tom 3 weighs 27.8 lbs., with 3 inch jaws.---Haven't found Tom Senior yet, he weighs 300 lbs..---It's just a matter of time.

VA, that's a beautiful pair you have there! Someday you need to show us more of your collection, something tells me it is quite extensive. The backdrop to your pictures, looks like you have an equally impressive property.

I found this "monster" today, missing jaw and a piece of the tower missing, but wanted it badly. A Prentiss 208, opens and closes real nice



Considering the jaw and all, I would have liked to get it for less but the guy would not go less than $28, still, I am happy.



When I saw it, I thought it was an 1 1/2" jaw, it's actually all of 2" & 5 1/2 lbs!


Still waiting for my first 100 plus lb vise. My biggest and smallest are just over at 101.5 lb


It's too bad about the broken jaw, up close this tiny vise with the Prentiss raised lettering is stunning. I figure jaws can be found or made (Kevin, I could put the vise in an envelope and mail it to you!). Anyone have thoughts on how best to repair the broken piece on the jaw tower?

Have a chance locally for a Record 5VS, does say Made in England opposite side from the brand and model number.

How does one know that this is one of the older "better" vises?

Started this thread a week ago, up to page 152.... I have vise envy.

Nuts: Made in England is a good start that you found a good older English made vice. one rule we have is you should always post pictures if possible of the actual vise (vice) or find one online to post that is as close to the one you are asking about.

not sure if the model you are looking at is a quick release which Record made on some models, but even if it's a regular made in England vice it is a good one to own if there are not any cracks or welds or other issues of abuse in it's past.

i just posted up some pictures on the Vise Repair 101 thread of my Record No. 4 that should be similar to the 5VS you are looking at.

drivesitfar. The guy sent me a couple of crappy cell phone pics, very hard to see the details. Went on line and found a couple of pics that match.

Right side : 5VS directly over Record

Left side: Made In England.

Can see no other markings, none on the moving jaw, only on the stationary jaw.

It does have the small anvil behind the rear jaw and has the swivel base.

Assuming that the vises are in good condition with only paint, dirt & surface rust issues, I think a lot of his prices are reasonable on the retail level.

The guy probably has over head costs and is in it to make a profit but if he's advertising through Kijiji he's competing with others who do too. He has a Record No.8 for example at $350. They can be found for a lot less than that. I bought a No. 8 and a No. 6, both in good condition, through Kijiji for $80 and $70 and that's fairly common.

Maybe start with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol or simple green to see how much gunk you can remove at first. Then maybe try a small spot with acetone, but it might remove the paint off the logo so be careful.

So there's a 429, 439 and a 449. I wonder how these differs from the 474?

I would take any of them that came across my path.

As for the comments about getting over losing the auction? If I did that then how could I enjoy the misery of knowing I lost it?

jwsia, I've had good luck with Simple Green soaked paper towel on Craftsman and SK logos, as well as others.

Wet the Paper towel and lay it over the logos; start with say ten min. and then work the droplets with a toothpick point. If they resist, go with the SG again.

In one case on my Canedy-Otto DP I had to use the paper towel and cover it with Saran Wrap so the SG didn't dry out, and leave it over night as the paint was near impervious. Not that it did me a lot of good; once I finally got the paint coming off, I discovered the PO/painter had half *** blasted the logo... almost all the original paint was gone

BTW SG full strength can be used to clean old dried house paint off brushes if they are good once worth the effort. just soak them in a jar of it.

Removed & cleaned the jaws on the 594 with a medium fiber deburring wheel. End of static jaw doesn't look shiny, but that's just angle.

I spent the long weekend in Big Bear at my dad's house by the lake and just spent the days hanging out with wifey and hitting a few sales while she slept.

These 2 were picked up for a few bucks and I couldn't of been happier to find them both.

Okay everybody, listen up because I've got a story for you to hear


Not too long ago, Oldldh posted some pics and info about his unicorn, the 5198.

The story starts with a man was cleaning out his garage after his father had passed and finally got to the big Craftsman. He had no idea what they were worth so he did some looking online for some answers.

Needless to say, he found Oldldhs crazed rantings about them on here and saw the want ad so he sent a message and contacted him.

I offered Larry my services to inspect the vise if it happened to be near me, as well as many other members on here. We kept in touch as I packed for my long weekend in Big Bear Lake where my dad lives as well as my brother/SIL and 3 nieces on the far side of town.

Oldie finally contacted me and told me about the secret location of the stable where his unicorn was being held.

Big Bear!!!!!!

He wanted to know if it was close to me and if I could get out there to take a look sometime. Since I was already heading there, I just simply made some arrangements with the seller and set a date and time
