that's the skate key.
way back when roller skates were metal (wheels and body) and the were adjustable to fit the size shoe you wore.
strapped right to your tennies.
that was the tool to adjust 'em.
those skates were awful to ride and noisey.

remember the song "i've got a brand new pair of roller skates, and you've got a brand new key"

You remember well. I had a pair of those skates and I was cool! I also had a pair of boots with a pocket on the side for a jack knife!

Found this old Blackhawk box locally on CL. I gave a lengthy description on the vintage Blackhawk thread, but no info yet over there. It's for a No. 100-W wrench set. Anyone have any info. on this box? Did Blackhawk ever offer boxes in that olive green? The seller made an attempt to paint it red as a kid. :( Fortunately he didn't make it to the inside of the box.

EDIT: Turns out the bottom cabinet is a Snap-On RKP-5 circa 1939! Just hand painted in red by a kid who didn't know any better. Restorations have commenced and threads will ensue!!!

83, I suspect that Blackhawk box is from WWII, where many tool companies diverted to wartime production.

That's what I suspected, which would explain the absence of a logo/medallion on the front cover. Any thoughts on how I might remove the crappy red paint without further marring the underlying green? Worst case, I can refinish the outside of the box only as the inside is in extremely good original condition.

Two stops over the last couple days.
First stop was an estate sale where I picked up :
A Sorensen Ignition Parts Cabinet(identified by a GJ/Google search)
A Columbian 4" swivel vise,not pictured,sold to a co-worker before I could get it off my truck.
Contents of the cabinet, nothing great but they were "free"
And:
A Lufkin 12 in ruler with center finder head,
Channelock 437 diag pliers,
Vlchek DOE
Snap On SD 42 screwdriver
Evans 6ft tape measure
8 in Crescent Adjustable
2 SK sockets ,9/16-6point,3/8 dr and 1/2-6 point 1/4" dr
Total was $60 but I sold the vise for $45 and my buddy owes me $25 for the cabinet as it was a pick for his barn/shop.

Hit a estate sale in Miami today. Bought some more c clamps, with the nice flat handle. I really needed these, as the others in the drawer were getting lonely.
Also stocked up on deck and drywall screws. Does anyone know what the mystery tool is in the right corner?
All for $ 15.00.

The mystery tool is a saw vise. It holds a handsaw for resharpening.

Jeff,
Sorry for the tease. It is full of rubber washers and disks.
The sale had a ton of lock boxes everywhere, all marked with contents. It was fairly organized. The other box on the left has the tamp in anchor tools and a few anchors. Sorry , no locks.

Good find Gregg!

We hit 3 planned sales this morning along with 4 non planned on the way home and nothing to show. Then I just got back from a local farm/lumber auction where I registered but didn't bid on anything. They had a couple small anvils and antique fans that went outrageous $$ and I was only interested in a few things personally so with prices high and no opportunity to make any profit, I left early. Strike 8....today, may try for 10....

Tiny haul for the morning but still a great buy. 2 stops, garage&estate sale less then 1 mile from home netted me everything for less then 60 and it doesn't include the straight razors I collect and the artwork

Plomb pebble wrenches with like new ratchet. Extensions and a mostly complete socket set with uni joint and single deep socket.

Handful of Plomb/Proto marked doe wrenches. My first few in the collections

Miller falls hand crank drill with mahogany handles and spare bits in the handle.

3lb + plumb axe head

Twerco welding ground clamp, new

P&C box wrenches

Armstrong? 1/4" ratchet

5 planned stops this morning and 10 TOO's (one stop was a neighborhood sale). Pickings were pretty slim. The last planned stop was advertised on CL and when I got to the address it wasn't there. When I got out of my truck and walked the sidewalk to see if it was in the backyard, I was rudely told to go away from through a window. :wtf:

There were a lot of YS signs out today, surprising considering it was in the 30's this morning. But, after the luck I was having with my planned stops I didn't want to waste anymore gas hunting down lawns full of more baby clothes.

Anyway, I ended up spending $8 between all the stops.

1ea. red and white rouge (barely used)
L.S. Starrett inside caliper
Channellock #41 4" cutters
Craftsman punch (circle G) (well used/abused)

3 metal solar light spikes
2 paint can spouts
SnapOn SSDP42 #2 phillips screwdriver

a small hammer handle
2 boxes of upholstery nails (long and short shank) both 1/3 full

I saw this Troy Bilt Horse and the tag said make offer. I asked the owner what he had in mind and he said $20. (no typo!!) It has all the special attachments and the 8 HP engine. He said engine is in great shape and all it needs is tires. It's dirty but doesn't look like it's had much use.

$5 for it all. Guy found a pile of tools in a foreclosed house he bought. Most was Chinese junk that had been left to rust into un salvageable scrap but I cherry picked the few good things that were in usabke condition.

Pretty slim pickings today as the season winds down. Still, I put together a list and headed out this morning. First stop, 8 am estate sale. Didn't have a lot of hope, but I did find a few things:

Handy Breeze fan (not what I usually buy, but I thought the price was fair and I have someone local in mind for it), Channellock 440s, Craftsman 'vise grips', Roe tape, Square-C Craftsman Vanadium needlenose, Klein lineman's.

Second stop (and the furthest out of the way) was a bust. Third stop was a retiring contractor/electrician's 'Man Sale'. Picked out a few things, all Craftsman:

Craftsman Professional ratchet (an RP with a nicer handle), a Crown-logo drill index (empty), and some orange-handled slip joints.

Third stop: Bust. Then I realized that it was the wrong sale. So I went to the right sale, which was stop #4. That was a bust. Took the scenic route home, which just happened to take me by a church rummage. Spent $0.50 there on two things:

Utica B 269's. Any idea what these are for? And:

Your typical USA thin-nose slip-joint pliers. But what brand are they?

Look closely, and you'll see "Proto Los Angeles MFD USA" stamped over (or possibly under?) "JP Danielson Jamestown, NY, USA". A bad quality day at the plant turned into a conversation piece!

Cool... I have the same set. It was my dad's and it looks like he paid $9.99 for it new. There are some other various pieces in there so I have no idea what it originally consisted of.
