Worked tonight on my VW and fixed the rear wiper issue. Also dug into the wiring for the washer pump motor to discover the pump is bad. Felt good to do something other than just send emails at work.

Took the Corvette out in the early morning fog to get it aligned. I got it back about an hour ago and the immense joy I feel right is immeasurable.

It's been since 83 that the car has been safely on the road. Dad did a bulk of the work before he passed in '06, with some help from me and I did the suspension and wiring. I'm looking forward to some driving before winter hits.

That's Great, enjoy! I wish I could get mine going, I have a C2 that I parked in 85. My Dad bought it in 67 and give it to me in 83 and I drove it for two years and parked it (to many tickets). I pickled the engine, pulled the tank and brakes off it in 89. I work on it a little here and a little there now but just can't find the time to get it done. Reading your post is good motivation, thanks.

Tonight wired some plugs and put up some insulation, winter is coming! oh and looked at the Corvette :(

Pulled the headers out of the Falcon, I think something has set up house keeping in them.

Worked some more on finishing my end tables that I've been putting off for way too long. Lots of scraping, and I gotta finish it off with a bit of sanding after this since it's not quite as smooth as I'd like.

I experimented with fiber glass making a mold and forming an inner apron for my 62 vette

I cut a 4" water drain pipe down the center and laid glass mat on it and poured the resin over it and it peeled off the plastic pipe better than expected

Just been and bought 2 sheets of ply and some 2 x 1 for a refit on the built in wardrobe in our bedroom. The 2 x 1 will be used as battens on the wall for some new shelving and replacing the old crappy melamine faced chipboard shelves currently in there. Now off to measure up properly and make myself a cutting list and then off to the garage for some quality chopsaw time.

Working on restoring a 1973 Arctic Cat El Tigre 440 quad plug. In 1979 something happened with the motor and the owner left it at a dealer and never picked it up. Sat in a shed since then until a month ago when I bought it. Caked in dust/dirt, but all the pieces are there. Last picture shows the day I brought it home.

Got my upper and lower control arms washed in the dishwasher today. Im going to repaint and install new bushings and balljoints on the Corvette.

Not a good idea! Do you guys have the "Click & Clack" column in your papers auto section? That would be the brothers Magliozzi, Tom and Ray.

They had a whole write up on doing that on 9/23/14.

Among the points brought up:
1 - Grease traps - a normal dishwasher does not have one - your car grease is going into the sewer or septic system.

2 - No matter how many times you clean the machine with empty runs, you will never get the contamination out.

They have a website - www.cartalk.com. Whole text of article is there.

I did that one time. Caught hell from the wife. Took many many loads with bleach to get the smell of burnt oil out.

So you got a "shed find" from 79! It got put in there the year I was born. It's in better condition then me. How did it not end up at an employees house?

Did you repaint it or is that really what it looks like after a good wash? Awesome score by the way!!

Bought a new tool chest from HArbor Freight two days ago which took forever to make it in the garage. Wife and I were the only ones able to move it and it weighs about 550lbs. So that took a little brain storming as it is all grass from where we could get it close enough on the trailer. Got it in and as always I had to start loading it up. It's about 75% full so I said hell I need a new welder. Went down to Harbor Freight and bought a new welder and used my awesome 20% off discount on both the tool chest and welder. Then bought some flux wire for $20 and used a 25% off on that and got a **** ton of free stuff. I think Harbor freight may hate me as I feel like I destroy them on their own coupons. Lol I got a welder, two clamps, three more leather welding gloves, another mask, wire, three sets of free batteries and three of those 6" magnet holder trays. All for maybe $130. Now sitting here watching tv trying to figure out what I want to do tomorrow (after I get home from hunting, deer season opens whooohoo!!!)

Replaced the thrust plate on the Snapper walk behind mower. All the parts places said it was no longer in production. I said to myself, "No way. They still sell that same basic designed mower." I ordered the same part for a 2015 model and guess what? It's pretty much identical. I had to drill out one hole to a bigger size. Change for the sake of change, I guess...

Made a part to repair a hinge on the most important seat in the house!! :lol_hitti

This will work until I pick up a new seat with metal hinges!

I just went the other way around. I just swapped out a seat with metal hinges for one with plastic hinges. No matter how often or how intensely I cleaned the metal hinges, they always corrode and turn green. If I could find one with stainless hinges that was a reasonable price, well, that would be different...

The dealer is small Mom and Pop type place out in the middle of nowhere. They only have 1 part time employee.

Good wash and a polish with a foam pad and Dewalt power. I steel wooled the emblems and trim around the hood opening.

It was a GLORIOUS 11-hour day in the shop -- pretty much my first in the last couple of years since Billy's mom moved in and Life As We Know It changed forever. I busted out a bunch of motorcycle parts in a color I haven't shot before, Tattered Black. I didn't get any After Pics yet but this is what I started with, along with a pair of brand new Showa forks (not pictured) ...

Marty Dreher and Dave Ford 005 - Copy.jpg

I also snapped a couple of Dave's finished valve cover and my first custom oil caps.

This is the way his engine bay looked before he broke the dog ear (and will again soon LOL ) ...

Dave Ford's parts installed May 21, 2014.jpg

This is his beloved "Dusty" that everything goes on ...

Work on the bathroom continues. This morning I painted the window trim following up Billy's taping and base coat earlier in the week and will probably slap another coat on the doors later. While installing the closet door (by himself), it slipped and pulled the top hinge along with a considerable chunk of hollow core door. Thankfully they're only about thirty bucks at Lowe's ... but ughhhhhhhhh!! This project is taking for friggin ever. Still digging that new sheet vinyl floor though! It's soft and warm on the feet. :D

Now if the Home Improvement Fairies would show up and finish it ..........

I set up the sliding mitre saw and turned some long lengths of 2 x 1 into shorter pieces, then set up the drill press and drilled and countersunk a load of holes in them. They're being screwed to the walls in the built in wardrobe in our bedroon to hold up a bunch of shelves, some replacing the crappy ones the previous owner put up and some additional ones to provide a bit more storage space. Theres more of the same on the horizon tomorrow and then I've got two 8x4 sheets of ply to chop up to make the shelves themselves.

Tonight its time to head out there to hide from Strictly Come Dancing with some beer and do some more manly jobs! Might light the moose up (my woodburner) but its been unseasonally warm here today hitting 22C at one point when the average temp for this tiome of the year is 14C.

****** windy though so we also took the netting roof off the soft fruit cage in the garden and folded the side netting down 2/3rds to take the pressure off the aluminium frame. Earlier this year we had some bad gales and the frame got flattened because we didn't do this, its amazing how much drag some netting makes. We're forecast to get the remmnants of hurricane Gonzalez on monday night into tuesday.

todays plan was leaf cleanup but due to an all day rain my daughter and I played in the garage. She learned how to hammer a 6 penny nail and to light a 12 volt light bulb and power an air horn using a 12v jump box. She is 7 btw and had a blast. She couldn't wait to tell mom all the cool things she did out there.

Quiet time in front of the fire, a Mike's Hard Lemonade now and then, and long walks on the beach .......... oh wait, there aren't any beaches in Tennessee. They're just in my head while I'm busy workin on stuff. :D

Got closer to the finish line on a cherry table strip/refinish.

That looks amazing!! You've definitely earned your handle -- I think I see a speck of dust on your ceiling reflected in it LOL

Over-Engineeded (Steampunk?) Bird Feeder

For the last few days, I have been working on a little project that a relative asked me to tackle.

The challenge:
The couple have a bird feeder that sits atop a post outside their front room window.
They enjoy feeding and watching the birds all year long.
They are getting up in years, and can no longer manage to dig their way to the bird feeder in the snow.

So, I was asked if there was some way that I could design something to get their feeder over to the covered porch (10') for re-filling, and then back to the spot outside their window, making it possible for them to keep it filled in the winter.

Of course, I had all kinds of cool ideas, including an auger setup to pump seed to the feeder, an overhead crane to drop seed into the feeder, etc.

But, one of the "asks" was that it be as low-cost as possible.

So, I decided that moving the feeder back and forth was the simplest option.

I chewed on the concept for a few days, and decided that a trolley/track system would work best, and require the least maintenance.

Then I looked for cheap ways to make it.

I bought some old kids roller blades at a used sporting goods store and salvaged the wheels and axles.

Then I designed a trolley that would support the 16" x 27" bird feeder platform.

i-TB6FWhT-M.jpg

And a suspended track that it could ride on:

i-dKcSFjH-M.jpg

And a transport mechanism:
i-4bHCrxk-M.jpg

i-CtVXwBk-M.jpg

i-s8PnnRT-M.jpg

Some sled and design details:
i-qF2BRb8-M.jpg

i-LPMKwDn-M.jpg

i-b72zSfF-M.jpg

i-jBmNfss-M.jpg

i-BjDbxvT-M.jpg

i-VLtdSGd-M.jpg

i-sRGjRhq-M.jpg

i-WkFRXL4-M.jpg

i-TjZBZgF-M.jpg

The ends are designed to fit over a 4x4 post top, and be secured from the sides.

And came up with a working proof of concept model:
video Here:

Now I will break it down, finish off the rough edges, sand and paint it, change the transport cable to a good stainless wire rope, add rubber bumpers to the stops at each end, and get it ready to install at their house.

I'll have to dig a post hole and add a second post for the porch end, but will mount the far end to the existing post that the bird feeder currently sits on.

I'll add the finished pictures when I install it.

UPDATE: Finished and installed.

The bird feeder originally sat on the post under the window:
i-zSt88zX-M.jpg

I moved the post closer to the house to get it more under the eaves, and added a second post next to the front porch.
i-h7KZTQw-M.jpg

And mounted the finished track, then moved the old bird feeder onto the movable trolley and installed it.
Now he can reel in the bird feeder and fill it from under the covered porch, then crank it back into place under the window. You'll just have to imagine the 3~4 feet of snow on the ground where the feeder is:
i-TjP4SZG-M.jpg

You tube video of him grinning and cranking his new trolley setup:

Checked deep cycle battery and found it short on water so I am trying to rejuvenate it. Will finish charging and test it tomorrow. Had to slip in a nap this afternoon.

Nice. What are you using for a finish?

I'm finishing up some walnut now.

14947972204_f1af557077_z.jpg

We stripped this table mechanically and applied a gel stain. Then, clear sealer and urethane by Vermont Natural Coatings.

Here's a short vid that shows how bad it was when we started:

I love walnut, that looks amazing. What are you putting on it?
