This mornings Estate Sale listed tools, but they were mostly junky bargain bin hand tools. The garage was packed solid with RC plane parts, so the toy guys were out there instead of in the basement getting in the way. Too bad there wasn't more to pick from. I ended up spending $12.

The haul :
- a spool of 1/4" cotton bungee (on a Luxor lazy susan spool)
- 2 early Peterson/Dewitt #9 metal working clamps (one w/ patent numbers and no release lever)
- L. Starrett clamp vise (pat. NOV 14 1871) 1" jaw. (has some issues with the spindle & nut)
- Craftsman DOE wrench 17mm - 19mm (=V=)
- Craftsman 19mm 1/2dr socket (-V-)
- SnapOn 3/4" 3/8dr swivel socket F-24
- unknown 1/4dr socket set (USA) (stamped metal driver w/ exposed gear)
- Cast-iron mayan temple looking thingy (just too odd to leave behind)

Good stuff bluebolt, the stand and arbor press. That little snap on set is neat.

That enclosed screw Starrett is off the chain!!! Great score!!! Had two planned sales today but they didn't list the address of one until thismorning and it turns out to be right around the corner from the EPIC sale I went to yesterday so I'll wait and hit it this weekend when I go back that way. Other sale listed tools but it was generic ****, only tool worth anything was a Craftsman crown top commercial circular saw but it was priced way to high. This seller likes to put things at retail and above, then have a "bid" box where you can leave a bid on anything you want. I did pick up an antique Chemistry book for $2 and then left....

I'll be looking for you guys to score today!

rest stuff BB and Jake!

Definitely need closeups of the little vise!

Jaek I think the Mayan temple is intended to be a support block to hold up the "tail" of something long, while you deal with the bitter end

That's what I was thinking. Each step on the block is at a different height, all the way around.

PS- I know it's a faulty auto-correct but "while you deal with the bitter end" is funny, as all too often it's so true.

That step block is used on a machine table to support the back end of a hold down.

For those that have been following my last few posts, I got another chance at machinist Disneyland today

I only had an hour so this is what spending 60 minutes of frantically running around netted me

I had my eye on a craftsman wood lathe but it was pretty rough after being stored outside so I settled for this Craftsman/Atlas 101 in excellent shape

The Huot drill cabinets are not used and we're just a bit dusty.

This place has been getting cleaned for 8 hours a day all week and there are still treasures buried under more tools and junk.

Tomorrow I'll be going back for more......

Got a few wooden screwdrivers at a sale today, but what I'm really excited about is the ~100 year old cast iron stand and old 8"(??) grinder I got today. Both for $100.
Stand is from A.D. Puffer and Sons and is stamped Boston, Mass. Has a little rusting on the bottom but seems to be generally good shape. From the little I've looked online, it says that Puffer and Sons building was bought by a cigar manufacturer in 1905, so I'm assuming the stand is older. Open to comments otherwise.

The grinder

Classic, that stand is definitely older than the stand, and your hypothesis sound right.

Both the stand and the grinder are awesome finds!

You did great for $12. 99% of the clamp vises I see have no stamp on them.

Finally, my favorite find of the day and one that has been on my wish list for as long as I can remember, a Delta band saw with the slow speed attachment for metal cutting!!! This was the tarp covered item mentioned earlier, I could not believe it was marked only $75 and not sold yet!!! Baby is home safe, works great and has the retirement light, all original, nothing missing or damaged, I am in heaven right now!!!

That Delta W/M is an unbelievable find for $75 with the retirement light. The light alone would sell for more than that. I searched for 3 years for that bandsaw for my small shop before I found one...and I paid way, way more than you and I was happy as a clam. Did a 100% restoration on it and now use it almost every day. Incredibly useful tool. I have parts, sources for parts, drawings and lots of knowledge for it if you ever need anything.

Indexmill.

I'm gonna tear that yard a new *** tomorrow so if there is a vise, I'll find it. If not, there is a Columbian in the bench I can stil buy

A friend of mine dug out a nice Columbian wood working vise there today and paid 5 bucks for it. Original paint and wooden handle.

More goodies will surface tomorrow for sure

I picked these items up today at a tool sale. I didn't get a smoking deal but I feel like I didn't do too bad for $40

Makita 3606 1hp router that's in great shape
18" Stillson pipe wrench, after seeing JakeMac's thread on the restoration of his I've been on the look out.
and a Estwing 4lb drilling hammer

I will clean up the hammer and the pipe wrench and put them to use.

Thanks Indexmill!! I have only ran in to about 3 in person, two were CL and missing parts and one was at auction(condition unknown). I bid viciously on the one at auction, then when it surpassed my funding, I got pissed and ran it up another hundred dollars just so the winner would not get a good deal. Kind of cruel I know but I had my heart set on that machine. Glad it worked out this way, this is the most complete and best condition out of the 3 and the price was exactly what I could afford!!

Classic, great find on that stand!

My haul for Friday and today. Two sizes Nicopress crimpers, never seen them before and then I find two same day two different sales. Also a Scotchlok cartridge connector tool.a 810 Proto 10" pipe wrench, Indestro ratchet wrench,Snap On gear puller, a Jacobs Chuck that fits on a 1/2" drive rachet, a Apex 1/2" drive x hex , some metric CM wrenches, a Dewitt made Vice grip. Not seen is a .$50 Klein side cutter that needed some oil therapy. Found quite stack of kitchen Tupperware, baking tins that I told my wife if she didn't like, I'd use in the shop. They didn't make it out here.

T4runner, USUCK for that Parker... I WANT one of that style Parker...

cb, Yeah once in a while I bring something home and it get's "claimed", usually I don't mind, other times... Nice scores!

Lots of other good saves out there! Well done guys!

Slim picking today, only two stops planned, (and minimal TOO's)

I missed on a painting scaffold I wanted, (it was same as mine and they could stack...)

But I did get these for a buck:

The driver is a Thorsen and I got it because My dad had a couple of these with the green tipped handle. the clamp is a 2" Brink and Cotten, and I like having extra 20A duplex receptacles. Eventually I'l replace all in the garage with these.

But the real score was....

(Drum roll entrance)

A Gerstner Machinists box! :rocker: My first! :pimpflash

Need cleaned and glued in a couple of places but for 25 bucks, I was not complaining, and VERY HAPPY!!!! :D

I've picked up some things that I've had on my list for a while now.

Old Emerson Oscillating fan. It works, but the cord is frayed. After I replace it I'm mounting it on my work bench.

Craftsman 5197 vise.

Small gasoline blowtorch.

Vintage Craftsman 150 table top drill press w/ stand. No arc of shame. No rust. Excellent paint. It even has a Jacobs chuck on it. It doesn't need any work done to it besides a good dusting.

Now I can get rid of my Chinese floor model.

MAC tools 1/2" torque wrench - $30. Owner/seller was a BMW master tech, said he always turned it down, and it had been calibrated about a year and a half ago.

Ideal snips, Husky 4" C-clamp, blow gun with siphon attachment. $8

Handful of sockets in the sizes that are always missing at work (10mm, 12mm, and 14mm) and (not pictured) steel Tonka dump truck for my son. Also $8

I hate it when I get behind on the garage sale thread...
Last weekend I only found one sale worth going to. Said lots of tools, but didn't look like much in the ad. I hoped the 3/4" drive stuff I could see in a couple of the photos would still be there when I arrived on Saturday. Of course, it wasn't. Shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Felt like I had to get something to make the trip worthwhile. I spent $11 on this stuff:

Williams and Herbrand spud wrenches, Bonney 3/4" drive extension, giant brake spoon or tire tool or ??? (help me out, guys!), Challenger pliers.

Had better luck today. Those pics are coming a little later,

Thanks guys!

That middle drawer isn't lined with metal, the tray IS metal; Aluminum, bent in a U shape and tacked to the drawer front, with a wood back also tacked in.

It's about the right size for a drill index. No clue if it had an intended purpose.

Came up with a couple more catalogs for the library:

I'm guessing the New Britain is from '59, the Craftsman is 1971. Interestingly, the only Craftsman ratchets in the catalog are RHFTs. Did they discontinue the pear-head ratchets for a time, or did the catalog only showcase the latest and greatest?

Also, there's this, which should be interesting for fans of alternative wrench designs, fans of hyperbole in ad copy, and the immature:

I wasted my time running around the county this morning for 3 sales that lied about having tools. One was a really poorly run Estate Sale. The owner was there getting in the way. The person running the sale kept telling people one thing, and the owner was telling them something else. Most of the stuff was way overpriced.

So, in frustration I went all the way out to a continuing Estate Sale from a few weeks ago. Nothing had been selling, because the guy that was running the sale was quoting ebay. Today (after 3 weekends) the prices were finally in the realm of reality and things were finally going out the door. This was my third trip out to this place.

Here's what $6 bought me :

- [red square] A secret surprise for Jeff Moss (shhhhhh, don't tell him, it will ruin the surprise ;) )
- a jar of asst. tubular rivets
- Moore & Wright (England) 150mm Rule
- a brass curiosity
- 3 small file handles
- 5 fine files
- Starrett Dial Indicator (w/ bad plastic crystal)
- homemade Indicator clamp stand
- small hammer handle

did the machinist book come with it or is that yours that has now found a new home. either way nice find on the Gertsner box.
