Just reinforces my WTF response when people on here say they use 3/8 for 90% of their work, all the way up to 25mm. I'm 50/50 between 3/8 and 1/2 starting at 13mm!

Biggest issue is the quick release button makes the square drive weaker. Pluse 3/8 drive tools shouldnt be used on large suspension fasteners. Thats what 1/2 drive tools are for.

Well, I guess I don't see this as a "complete fail."

It's a bummer it broke, but I guess that can be expected when you're giving a big pull on a 3/8" mechanism with an 18" handle.

The way it broke definitely makes it appear that it failed around the quick release mechanism. I wonder how much more a non-QR version would be able to take?

i was thinking the same i never use quick release ratchets and have never had a ratchet break like this. i think if it wasnt a QR ratchet it wouldnt of broke i did finish the job with another long handle 3/8

I think a bunch of folks on here need to discover Kroil as well as a torch!

If you use one of those or both, you will find that even the cheapest ratchet will remove the fastener without breaking anything, as long as you use the correct drive size for the job!

Blahblah blah. Most you guys get your ******* in a bunch when you actually use a tool and it breaks. All brands break and have new duds. They are tools they break if you dont wa.t to whine about it go back to polishing them.

So starting at 13mm you switch to 1/2" drive? :eyecrazy:

He says 50-50 so probably depends on the bolt location/torque.

I'm similar. If there's room I don't have a problem using 1/2" anywhere if I got the right size socket. It's what happens when you're "cheap" and have a lot of cheap tools and don't want to break your cheap tools. I try to not "press my luck" torque wise.

Wrong tool for the job. Should have been using 3/8" breaker bar, or 1/2" ratchet, or 1/2" breaker bar . . . AND . . . with suspension parts, you should START with 1/2" breaker bar or impact wrench if available.

Great quick response by Tekton rep to jump in thread and warranty the ratchet.

I just bought this same ratchet a few hours ago. I'll let you know if I have the same results. Personally I use Rust Eater or Kroil and 1/2 or 3/4 drive tools to break things loose. It saves skinned knuckles living in the land of rust and salted roads. I also keep 3 sizes of torch in the garage.

It has Made in Taiwan stamped on it.

You can paddle across the ocean in a rowboat, but I'd rather be on a cruise ship.

The 1/2" Extra long TEKTON ratchet is rated almost to 500 ft-lbs of torque (vs the 180 or so of the 3/8")....so at 24" long, a 240-lb guy could stand on it & it should be able to hold up without breaking.

I would consider upping my tool collection to include that one...still, it is not a breaker bar....but its nice to know it will hold up to that much force.

I use the 3/8" extra long ratchet for oil changes primarily. The shops around here like to put on drain plugs with impacts. It breaks them free with no issues.

However . . . if you use your only ratchet in such a way that you BREAK IT, then you won't get much mechanic work done !! Can't let a stubborn bolt stop your progress, so you'll have to post online complaint to get a tool replaced ! Garage sale 1/2" or 3/4" drive Craftsman breaker bar in your toolbox would have kept you working ! ;) . . :D

Only tool I've ever broke in 40 years is breaker bar that was being used as intended . . . but only 1/2" drive when I should have had 3/4" drive (my dad didn't "believe" in 3/4 drive, even when working on old tractors) !! :bounce:

Ooops, need to correct as have broken couple things. Broke another tool which was cheapie Chinese 1/2" drive socket that cracked wide open when taking off lug nugs with breaker bar. That set was not used again. :D

Seriously? :wtf: In the land of time is money known as flat rate, few tasks are done manually by hand. Perhaps your school needs to have a reality check and enter the real world. :dunno:

Yes, as a teacher I have students learn how to do it correctly and understand hand felt bolt torque. If you give someone air tools starting out they will strip out half the bolts and twist off the others...
I do teach with air tools, but much care must be taken, and only after much hands on practice.

Quality comes first, quantity will come with practice...

Must be shearing bolts off like nobodys business :dunno:

Just because a person uses 1/2 drive does not mean you have to be stupid... and tug on it with both hands.

You must develop a sense of touch... fixing your own screw-ups will help you develop that sense quicker. Spend an hour under a vehicle in the cold drilling out a broken fastener... I hope you are not a slow learner. :D

along the lines of that my teacher says but you put it in a much nicer way.
airtools are great make life much easier make things allot faster but i leaned the importance of being able to work without them.

In my youth I did the water pump on my 70 Impala using the 40 piece 99 cent store ratchet/socket

Didn't have a problem at all with it.

I would be ashamed to have even have started this ridiculous thread. You grossly abused a tool and ruined it, then called out this damn good company as a fail, when YOU were the fail. If I was with Tekton, this would have been a rare case of warranty DENIED!

I would say lighten up a little bit. It's a tool forum.

It doesn't sound like the OP used a cheater, so he didn't "grossly abuse" the tool. Was it the right tool for the job? Maybe not. Sounds like the OP has learned that he can't yank too hard on these extra, extra-long ratchets.

+1 no cheater was used. Now i know the tools limits and dave.R is sending me out a replacement so all is well.

There is also the fact that most of my 3/8 is 12 point and the 1/2 is six point.
I was pulling brake caliper bolts on Monday, I had my 10mm 1/2 drive out for that as per usual, and nothing broke.

I recently rented a serpentine belt tool from autozone. The guy gave me a brand new one since the used ones were all rented out. After the first use on a 2003 Toyota Celica, the 3/8" drive sheared right off. I mean....what kind of idiot designs a 24" handle and then puts a little 3/8" drive at the end? This is the exact one that they gave me.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014WDKQ4/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Luckily for me, I almost bought it off of amazon until I realized that autozone loans tools.

If a $30 ratchet broke like that on me and I wasn't seriously injured, I'd probably just laugh my *** off and call it a day.
