Not in the garage really, but in the store for another 'garage'. I bought some hand tools for a local FIRST Robotics team who is in a disadvantaged area in Montreal. They had some tools stolen last year and they will need to start their build on Jan-4. One of the mentors is scrounging around at garage sales for ratchets, I grabbed a hacksaw, wood saw and some allan keys yesterday to donate.

Glad to hear that... I hate that too... or they don't help you clean up after you do the work, use your tools / facilities...

Oh this was a paying job, their not allowed in my shop let alone help. I was trying to save them some money from their son's own stupidity and all they did ***** about the price when they picked it up. I told him it should have been well over twice the amount and I didn't charge him for the time nor fuel that I spent going to the salvage yard to get the parts.

I swore I would never do repairs for customers using parts from a salvage yard again but trying to help a neighbor out around the holidays to keep the cost down just bit me in the *** because their stupid.

My wife told me not to take the job on for these neighbors but I didn't listen trying to be a nice guy, it just backfired on me.

Mike.

Consider it a lesson learned. They have burned their bridges and I don't expect you will ever go out of your way to help them again. At least you had the Christmas spirit. Kudos to you for that.

Tonight I get to go knock on the damn neighbor's door and inquire why after busting my *** for the past three nights working on his kid's Exploder, he felt obligated to write me a bad check. I went to the bank on my lunch hour today and the stinkin check bounced, insuficient funds.

I tell ya, it is getting harder and harder to be nice and try to help people out or even work on their **** period any more.

Sorry for the rant.

So, if the bank won't honor his check, how do you expect to get paid?

Not busting anyone's chops here, what the neighbor did was wrong all around, but if he has no money in the bank, how are you going to get paid?

Go get the keys to the Exploder and lock it down in your driveway till it gets paid?

File a small claims court case and take him on Judge Judy? cause she'll ream his *** good!

Whow.. .I've not priced them in a long time, but with Junk yard ..what 10% of reman?, and reman 50% of new? They should be kissing your feet.. Sorry to hear about them being ungrateful... but glad you're done with it.. I can only bet what the discussion was about "warranty" on the axle after all that...

Fabricated the replacement bottom of my grill. The 30" x 3/8 " wall pipe that I used for the bottom only lasted 26 years.

Last night I completed the axle swap in a neighbor's Exploder and got it the hell out of my shop.

Freakin' unappreciative people.

Mike.

Is this the one you initially didn't really want to do since it was so close to the holidays? The same one that you were going back and forth with a salvage yard part or new part to help them save money?

What the heck happened?

EDIT: Just read the rest of the page of this thread and saw what happened. Hate to hear that.

Rebuilt an old Weller soldering gun. Replaced the cord, cloth covered and had asbestos, and made a new tip. Other than that, nothin.

Well yesterday afternoon I tried calling him and left a couple of messages and he didn't answer nor return my calls. Last night the wife and I were running to grab some dinner so I decided to stop by his house. I knocked on the door and his daughter answered the door. I got the impression that he was reluctant to come to the door. I thought about going off on him infront of his daughter and wife but asked if I could talk to him outside instead.

The conversation started out that it is the holidays and everything seems to be going against them with all of the holiday expenses. I explained that it is no different than for anyone else. I explained that I really didn't want to do the job and my wife didn't want me to take it on but I have a few expenses coming up after the first of the year which is why I agreed to do it.

I then explained that had his son addressed the issue when he first noticed it the cost would have been kept down because he destroyed the gears, bearings and seals completely by continuing to drive it. If he wants to be upset at someone, be pissed at his kid.

I then went in to the whole cost to replace the ring & pinion as well as all bearings and seals would have been at least as much as the entire bill by the way I did it. I went out of my way to track down and locate a replacement axle assembly from a local salvage yard to try to save them some money and didn't charge him for the time spent on the phone, coming home to get my trailer and run to the salvage yard to pick it up. There was about two hours alone there, AND I shelled out money out of pocket to get the rear axle. They wanted $325.00 for it and I talked them down to $275.00 for the complete axle but it was missing the E-brake cables which I would have to swap over.

I told him he had until Dec. 24th to get me the CASH or I was taking him to small claims court. I hate the thought of taking him to court and don't want to deal with it but at this point I thought it to be a scare tactic more than anything. Don't know if it worked or not.

This next part is more of a personal problem I have and I probably shouldn't even mention but just to give you a little more background. This family moved in right after my wife and I did, our kids grew up together and attended public schools together as well as when we went to church. They are the holier than though type that don't give me the time of day unless their cars are to the point where they are flat broke down and not running at all. No preventive maintenance and no fixing problems when they first creep up. If I am in the yard mowing my lawn they will drive by with their noses in the air as they don't even wave. EVERY time I see him or he brings something by the very first words out of his mouth are "I haven't seen you in church in a while". Like I didn't know I haven't been there. My wife wondered why I didn't go off on him about how he can play that religious game yet pull something as dishonest as this and play the victim when we are taught to pay our own way through life but I told her I didn't want to get into a character debate or assissination because although it would have made me feel better, it wouldn't have resolved anything.

Anyway, sorry about the long rant, I appologize, no need to drag this out any more. When he came by to pick up the Explorer I told him I would make it an even $600.00 if he paid cash. Otherwise it would be a bit more. He squawked and complained. Asked if he could take it and bring the cash in a few days. I told him no it doens't leave until it is paid in full. He wrote the bad check at that point. At this point I would be happy to at least get the approx. $300.00 that I am out of pocket and chalk it up to a learning experience but the full amount would definately be nice.

Again, sorry for the rant. I told him to lose my telephone number and NEVER call me again to work on their ****.

Mike.

You did a good thing, trying to help people out, especially during Christmas time. Don't let someone's attitude and actions bring you down to their level. Kharma's a ***** and will catch up to them.

Not " In " the garage but just outside, I replaced these old tires, with ones I found at Agri-Supply in Statesboro, Ga, ( while on vacation ).
These should give me a lot of service on this small utility trailer I have!

ZMotorSports, maybe you should tell your neighbor that you will put something in the church bulletin that says, Mr. Deadbeat upstanding church-goer needs your prayers or all of you to take up an offering because I'm gonna kick his *** if he doesn't pay me the money he owes me. Sounds like he'd hate that sort of "payback" lol

Ya that's a good one. He and his wife are the type that image is so very important. This is obvious as they want to show the perception that they are good Christians yet the **** he pulled on me makes it clear his core values differ from that perception.

Anyway he just stopped by with a check from the local church for the bill. Now I have a moral delemma here, I don't want to take the church's money as that is what the members have paid in and I don't want that. I think I will return everything except the $300.00 that I actually spent out of pocket to the church. I don't feel good about taking the remainder from the church members. I just want my out of pocket expenses covered and chalk the loss of labor up to a lesson learned.

i'd still tell him to stick the check in his ***, no matter who it came from, or if it's even any good.
CASH ONLY
(no matter who it comes from) he can take his sorry *** to the bank, cash it, and hand the cash directly to you.
i keep the car until that happens, or
see ya in court douchbag

andf make it known to him that he or his family/friends are NOT welcome on your property, and you'll file tresspass charges against them if it happens.

i'd make it known to all the members of the church, that he wrote you a bad check after you tried to help him out, and what the church tried to do to cover for him.

i'd be willing to bet theres only a select few at the church that know they are trying to cover his sorry ***... if i was a member of the church i wouldnt be too happy about using the churches money to bail out a sorry-*** member

just my $0.02

ok more like $0.03, but you get my meaning

The older I get, the more annoyed I get with some churches. Is this church very well to do? If they are, consider giving the money to a cause that you care about. Either way, you will have a write off on your taxes.

Zmotorsports,
I'm in no way siding with Mr. Churchgoing Deadbeat and you are completely entitled to feel taken advantage of. Just trying to look at things from the other side of the dam. Regardless of whether he goes to church or not, maybe he really is financially in a bad way. If he's as devout as he seems to try to look, maybe he never expected that big of a debt and he felt his only way to do right by you was to go to the group of people that he thought would be able to help in his time of need.

Just a thought during this Holiday season...

Just another thought. Is this check a loan from the church or is it charity? Let that determine what you do with the balance above the $300.

Installed a raptor 150 lift pump on my brothers LB7 duramax. Installed a new factory motorcraft lift pump on my 6 litre ford. Removed an extra shim I installed when doing the blue spring mod on my 6 litre. (I had it running 72 lbs of fuel pressure, almost positive that's why the fuel pump gave up early) Then I cleaned up the shop some and grilled pork chops for me and the girlfriend.

I can appreciate what you are saying. I can also respect the fact that they are struggling during the holidays. That is exactly why I went out of my way to locate a used axle vs. rebuilding the one in the vehicle. I called and told him what I had found and what my plan was and an approx. cost vs. rebuilding the axle in the vehicle.

He at NO time ever communicated to me that there would be a problem with the blll. Had he expressed to me a problem maybe I would have worked with him like ask for the money to cover my out of pocket expense and then I could work with him for the balance, or just turned the job away like my wife told me to do. To me that would have been the decent thing to do with my fellow man. But he chose deception and deceit instead. I don't care how broke you are that is plain wrong, period.

If I am going to do charity work it should be my decision not someone else making the decision for me.

I would agree, most neighbors will never know nor have any idea. I am sure he won't say anything and I don't run in the same circles sort of speak so he is in the clear as far as anyone knowing.

My integrity and my reputation mean a lot to me as I have worked hard my entire life to be fair with people and would appreciate the same respect. However, in a situation like this it has been my experience that the one doing all the talking is the one people seem to believe and seeing as how I would just be keeping the pot stirred, I am just going to drop it and forget it. I don't want my name being drug through the mud nor people just thinking of me as being "money hungry" or greedy.

Good on ya. I suspect the congregation would agree with you.

Again, most will never know but I am sure that is not where they would want their money being spent.

I can't answer that with any certainty. I am in new territory here, and one I don't want to be in again.

Even though you haven't been to that church in awhile, I'd call up the secretary and have her add their slacker family to the Weekly Prayer List. People like that need all the help they can get to lead them in the proper direction ... and it would embarrass the $hit out of 'em. :D

Mike.
