va & zoomie Both of you are sitting on a pile of vises a mile high. I would not be surprised if between you two there are a half dozen Parker double swivelers

Joe I thought you and me were buds,
"I Unfriend You"

drives The one I have is not a Parker. If I hadn't put so much oil on it to keep the rust down it would hold fine. When I got it was dry and a little hard to turn but it held in place tight.

GET, sorry brudda, senior moment. How I could ever mix up you and 'Drivesmecrazy' is beyond me.

Joe: i think you brought Get into our discussion. are you having a senior moment or is the vise magnet in your garage playing games with you now? i think the Parker auction is going to end before you get your Emmert listed, but i'm sure you have some pocket change you can bid with from the other deals you've been talking about.

cheers and best of luck "big guy". does this mean you won't pick it up for me if i win??

You are dead to me ..... until after the auction.

So Joe, if a GJ member on the left coast say, happened to win that auction, would you be a good sport and Pick it up and ship it for that member? All paid for of course!

Reed 2C. If I knew better, I would have never had bought it for $80.
Live and learn.

This is what it looked like
Reed2C.jpg

No swivel base, no dynamic pipe jaws, welding has been done, dynamic pipe jaw hole welded over.

Functionally, it felt fine.

This thing is good for parts. Too much damage on dynamic jaw.

Number 3 vise is home. it is a little rough on the jaw faces, but ok other than that.

But as you can see I did ok on the price, even if it needs some work.

My thought to make it usable is to just weld on some new jaw faces. Not sure if my skills would let me do a more proper cleanup of threads and holes. But not sure what else to do. This vise has certainly been mistreated, but the main screw works OK, just need to make it workable again.

ChevyChuck: great looking Reed 3C. you might want to get some rubber washers for the handle or one of those little guys is going to lose a finger. PM me if you want to trade for something different or if you might need some college money for your crew.

I dont think Im ready for a trade yet. I'm pretty attached to this one, but some rubber washers are definitely in order. Dont want any lost fingers.

Tritonus, use it like you stole it. It's a wonderful vise till you break it.
Depending on the welder and your usage it might have years of service left.

Or the dynamic jaw might be falling off as we speak.

Hello Vise Friends,

Pictured is my last vise restoration for 2014. The pictures are the before and after of the vise. There is a detailed write up on the Vise Repair 101 thread.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

I thin that is the first broken Reed I have seen, looks like the holes for the pipe jaw are a weak spot.

MARTY, just over the Northern NJ line is Warwick, NY. Check out this ad for a work bench with 2 vises for $125. The green one looks to be 5" but I cannot figure the make, it is sitting on 2X8 boards and they look like dimensional lumber. Not a Parker, not an Athol...anyway I think its a great deal.

I think the green vise in the picture is a prentiss someone modified the swiveling mechanism on.

ALL: I have decided not to bid on the Parker even though it has a double or triple swivel. with Get's comment that it doesn't hold easily and the fact that i really am not trying to buy Parker vises i'm out. i doubt that even Joe cared, but others may have so this is for them.

I did buy an early 1900's or late 1800's Vanderman open screw vise similar to this one a couple days ago. i'll post the real pictures over on the Vise Repair 101 thread. it is sort of an open screw, but it has 5 inch jaws and easily weighs 100 pounds. it has the single bolt through the bench to mount it plus a couple other holes to keep it from swiveling. we on the left coast don't all swivelers, but we do have a few.

I'm thinking 6" and possibly American Scale? I'd be all over that one if it were local.

I would like to have a Vanderman but a No. 3. There was one in New Haven CT at the first of the week ($100) but it looked like it had a piece broken off the rear base. I would like the find a Walworth also. I have seen what I think are Miller Falls vises while we are talking about big open screw vises.

Well I picked up the reed today. The guy was real nice and a pleasure to do business with. I did buy another vise he had, its a huge milling vise weighs about 70lbs but no name, just what looks like JAS. It got dark quick while taking pictures but here are a few, the Reed is in such great shape I am so happy. I have no use for the milling vise but it was waaaay to cool to pass on. Does anyone know who might have made the milling vise. I will post it also separately hoping someone knows.
