Outlaw: did they have paper when your Parker #3 was new to print on a catalog page. that girl is an oldie and looks like it was stuck in a museum for 100 years. by the way i'm betting you are liking that gas is closer to $2 now instead of $4 like it was about this time last year with all that driving.
SNIP.

Hey, papyrus will scan just fine... :p

And I think ALL of us are enjoying this respite. Lets enjoy it while we can, as well as the shot in the arm to the economy it will have if it lasts a little while...

No.---I pulled the trigger but forgot to lock and load.

He's relisted it again but has the correct logo up now.---Somehow just don't have the same allure.--Not nearly as rare as it use to be.:dunno:

I really like how your Parker Vise restoration came out with the Rustoleum Hammered finish black.

Great job!!!

Finished stripping the 3 layers of paint. Repainted it with Rustoleum Hammered finish black. I'm somewhat disappointed in how far from black it is, but will leave it how it is. I thought the distributor's tag was kind of neat so I left it on.

Picked up this big ole Wilton C3 just before Christmas.
After a bit of work, paint and a few new parts I think it scrubbed up pretty well :)
Can anyone help me with dating this one?
The stamp reads 88 86
So that would be the 8th of August 1986 ?
Or it could be read as 9th August 1988 ?

Or, September 8, 1988. Either way, that is a keeper. Great vise!

All: anybody have a good idea how big this Reed is? i only have the one picture for now and the one end of the handle looks like it sat in the dirt for 100 years or they replaced it with a golf ball.

could it be a 208 or is it just a 5 inch?

My guess is 6in the slide appears to be to short to be a 8incher because 8in vises open up like 12inches with full nut engaged. But looks clean with replaceable jaws.

Drives; Hmm, it's on a forklift tire/rim combo. Just a guess but if that was 8" (or 200 lbs.+) , this would have to make that rim maybe 16 or 18". Again I'm no pro, but I think the proportions are off. Even 5" or 6" seems to be pushing it to me. But I'd be happy to be wrong.

I concur with the person that said it's welded on a solid forklift tire...

Handle to vise proportions definitely are not there for an 8", sorry. The 8" has a long *** handle, and the nose is relatively small to the front face of the giant vise.

The logo on the side isn't that big for a 4" or 5", unless they changed it over the brief time they did that style (which I doubt).

My guess is that it's a 6", I vaguely recall the larger logo on that size. Though the 8" also has a large logo...

I would concur( sounds like a doctor) that it is not an 8". BUT it is a nice 6" so make a good deal and go get it. I have a newer reed with that logo that I will try to post for reference to compare.

Rusty, Steel, Jason and Demo: i'm pretty sure you are all correct that its maybe a 6 inch Reed 206. i found the ad in California which is a little bit of time and gas or shipping costs for me to add on the price. so i'm passing it on and letting somebody closer negotiate on it because at $500 it's more than a tad high for a 6 incher that isn't local to me.

Jason: nice call on the welds because i thought it was just setting on the tire rims.

ALL: here's the link and other than the tack welds it looks like it's in great shape for a 60 year old vise.

Well all of a sudden I am seeing lots of them. I gotta say that mine is terrific quality. Can't explain the breaks I see in other pictures.

I may have found my new passion.

Not American Iron but definitely excellent quality.

I have 2 of the FPU sliding tail vises and a very nice Bison 1271 rotating head vise. They are quality tools.

Because even a princess needs to work on her own toys. Built this bench on New Years Eve, and it needed a vise to match daddy's. I repainted an old 2-1/2 prentis I had pink with glitter. I know some of you may cringe, but to have a chance to bring my daughter into the world of tools, and quality, I will paint anything pink.

Now she runs out into the garage and says "Daddy I have bench and vise just like you!" She is 2-1/2 years old.

Cheers

Aw, that's too cute!

I made my son a scaled down wood workers bench for his third birthday when Norm Abrams was his Hero! (all day watching VCR recording of the show if we let him...) No vise though.

Thanks guys. I really see this olive color being more at home in a little wood shop than bright red. I did create & print that decal and have the image file if anybody ever needs it. Just let me know.

I have two benches in my work area in the shop. The metal bench has a medium sized Parker 271 1/2 on it. The other has a bowling alley top on it. I don't really want to drill holes to mount a vise on it, but could use some help holding small items while working there. I came across this vacuum style. I think it'll work well after cleanup.IMG_0673.jpg

I think it's a great idea to teach children how to use and appreciate tools at a young age.

Right up until the point that you come home and find your Drill Press in pieces scattered all around the garage because she wanted to see how it worked.
Good Luck

Mark,
I'm looking for a 1250 Bison vise. I've seen a few on Craigslist but not landed one. I got my 1271 from an American distributer on closeout and never seen another for sale. If you find one of the fpu vises the forward adjuster screw is staked in place. I think trying to remove it causes that area to break.

893cv,
My Bison 1250 came from my Dad, who bought it at an auction in the early 70s. This spring, I plan to machine a swivel base for it. Too cold to work in my shop now.
Thanks for the heads up on the FPU vise. I just picked one up a couple of weeks ago for restoration.

Can you elaborate on this? I have an FPU that I've completely stripped, and waiting to restore I didn't run into anything like you mention.

With both of my FPU vises, I found that the front set screw for adjusting the ways have had their threads deformed in a way that prevents them from being removed. I think that this may be why so many of these vises that come up for sale have damage in that area.

Ha! Same went for my father. He gave me my first real set of tools when I was 5.....I quickly figured out how to take most of the weed whacker motor apart....first lesson in engine building!

I tell you what though, if I come home to my drill press taken apart by my daughter, I will be proud!

So this just made me laugh! Thank you for the link to that vid. I have sent it to my buddies.

I am an engineer, now working in sales, born to a Machinist. I paid my way through college welding pipe fence, barns, and working as a mechanic.

There are a few engineers who can actually do something out there, but they are FEW and far between.
