This wood anvil stand i'm going to try to build one like it might not be a "stump" or a machine gun turret, but i think it has it's cool factor.

I like that. I'd be more inclined to go with a longer, solid length of bole straight to the floor with no legs though. It'd be a lot sturdier than whacking legs onto a shorter piece, and would absorb energy far better.

That's just a downright **** vice. :D

Also, enjoy pictures of what a new "Heavy Duty 6" Machinist's Vice" by RIGID looks like. 5/16" thick ears to bolt down to the table. Company paid $599 for this when the jaw broke off our 10" of unknown age/origin.

When you say 10'', you are talking about how wide it opens aren't you?

10" jaws. Closed it was about 3' long. I didn't have a vise fixation when it broke, otherwise I would have taken it home.

That Miller Falls screams to be mounted on a stand, and I don't like vises on stands.

Unless of course it is heavy enough that you have to move it with a fork lift.

Now that interest me.

Oldldh and joe.striper,---Thanks for the nudge, and it is a really good deal on a really solid vise, but for some reason I have never had that, (got to have it, can't live with out it), factor when it comes to those heavy railroad open screw vises.---They are built like a tank and most have held up good against the times.---But I have to conserve my funds right now cause I have something else in the cross hairs.---Thanks for the thought fellows, but I'm going to have to pass.

By the way, did either one of you bag my #4 Charles Parker wrench last night.---I had the windage right, but forgot to raise for elevation.---Got to remember that, windage-elevation, windage-elevation.

If you had bid $10.50 more it would be yours. I put my bid in early so I wouldn't forget about it. I bumped it up by $10 at the end.

Beat up. Rusty. Crack in the base. Swivel handle bent. No jaws. Too heavy.

What else can you add to my list?

Todays find is a Paramo No. 6, Made in England, Hi-Duty Vice. Pretty cool, huh.

Update:

Removed vise swivel base and did a general clean-up and happy to report that rust is not an issue. All the crud was actually Bondo dust and other crud. Also...more good news...the swivel lockdown bolt and handle screwed out just fine, no rust and the bend in the swivel lockdown arm can be straightened out. The jaws are still a problem...crack in base is still a problem.

Regarding the jaw insert area, those should tidy up to a usable state with a file. The rounding at the top of the jaws will obviously sit off kilter to any new inserts though. Looks like you have a sheared screw or two to remove from there too?

Personally, I'd be half tempted to use that vice as a candidate for lead inserts. You'd be able to mould & pour the inserts to both match and mask much of the damage, and with lead inserts it would be a gem for working on delicate pieces.

Fretters...I like your idea about the lead inserts, that sounds like a very good idea considering the current state of the jaws. Also, I have already put my file to the jaws.....it will take a lot of time to clean them up by this method but I think it might be my way since I have no other tools for this.....slow and steady but I'll get there.

Can you take a picture of the bottom of the swivel base? I have an Emmert that looks identical to that IIRC. Same screw eye and large lock down handle. I wonder if they were from the same factory?

As requested by zkling, here is a pic of the bottom of the base of the Sterling.

Yep, my Emmert Tiger looks very similar, it actually has a shouldered screw for the swivel so it will stay on. I think someone may have replaced yours.

Anything is possible I suppose, but I would be very surprised if the center pin wasn't original. It is very well made, to the point where if it were shop made, the machinist could have easily machined a shoulder as well.

You said the base can come off if the lock handle isn't in place? Then what would be the point of slotting the screw? Let me see if I can dig up some old pics of my Emmert, it is now mounted.

Found some old pics.

Pantera: Very nice! I may do my Prentiss 264 like that.

I picked up the Athol 613 1/2 X today after the hold out. Really nice vise. What was the time when Starrett put their name on them?

When did Athol's have replaceable jaws? Seems to me it is a Starrett. What does it say on the other side?

Here's my 623 with replaceable jaws. The base has the continuous strip with mounting holes as opposed to individual tabs.

This is a good one? Guy is just around the corner from where I work.

No idea what the general type of price is for those, but it looks tidy enough from a brief glance, and it has the original pipe inserts too. Seems a lot of those go missing at some point. Only thing I can make out from the pic which seems slightly off is that the jaw inserts aren't meeting flush, top to bottom.

Judging from the picture and assuming that there are no cracks or breaks, it may not be a steal, but it's a reasonable price. I would take time to look at it if it was near me.

Just finished the stand and vise. It has been 35 years since I have done any welding. The welds do not look that great but they will hold. Also I love this site !

Here's an old 4 inch Craftsman that has served me well over the years..

This is a great little 3 inch Superior that I use as a "put anywhere" vise;

And this is a 4-1/2 inch Woden from England that is easily the most precise bench vise I've ever laid eyes on (sorry about the lousy photo, this one's mounted inside the truck)

I saw this vise on Ebay today and was wondering what the purpose of the rounded divots on the back were for....a swage?

About 8 months ago i sold a customer in the Napa region of CA a couple of vises. He is now a full fledged addict. So today he sends me this pic. He bought from an estate this Wilton C3 on its stand, a 3" and 2.5" bullet (both swivels) for $200. I am sooo jealous. Oh yeah, i forgot, in the background is his new $100 welding table from the same estate sale

June: i have a Vanderman vise that almost looks identical to that Athol. i read the slots in the back were made to make slight bends in in steam piping.

they might have had attachments and if Outlaw thinks they did i wouldn't disagree because he might have helped design these old vises in another life because he has an "old" soul when it comes to old tools. :dunno:

Zeet: nice selection of vises and stands too. glad to see you've figured out some different ideas on where to mount them and how. I started a vise stands thread a while back and the short little stand you made is interesting and would you mind posting up pictures with specs on this thread?

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&highlight=vise+stands

Fireman: for not welding for 35 years your stand looks pretty solid. i also see that you have 3 welders in the back of your great vises so either you take damn good care of your welders or you might be going to start welding again?

Demo: it's only a couple hours from my front door if you want me to pick up that old vise if you can get him down to $300 and if you might still want to buy it. i'm sure there are members even closer and good to know you are looking in my area because I've been looking in yours. cheers
