Anyone know what brand of vise this is http://columbus.craigslist.org/tls/4887126927.html There is no info on it anywhere according to the owner.

As Blue Frog said, I did have a match to that style of vise, but ended up selling it to another GJ member who is doing a full restoration on it.

However, if you go to the below link just above my attached pictures, you will see that vise pictured when I had it and also a lot of the details about it.

There was no maker marks on mine and at the time, thought it might be a one of a kind. However, a few months after I sold it, I found another exact one to my first one and have kept it, as found the concave jaws on it are great at holding plastic pipe for cutting. I'll attach pictures of the 2nd vise, just as documentation of it's existence.

On the one you are thinking of buying that appears on CL, I found it a couple months back listed on our Columbus CL and so now know of at least three of these vises in existence.

Hope this helps!!!

Mike

What do those weigh? I'll bet those vises are very light for their size and stronger than light weight cast vises,

I wonder if those were made during the steel shortages of WWII? :dunno:

You would think they could have at least made provisions for a top plate to keep the screw protected. :dunno:

My four inch athol I just finished up. I painted it with plasticote cast refinishers, then done the lettering with my wifes fingernail polish. The spring that holds in the main screw was a real pain. I read some guys saying to compress the spring in a vise then use wire or fishing line to hold it, but that wouldn't work for me. The spring fit too tightly around the screw, ended up using two bbq scewers to compress the spring then stuck the pin in. The previous owner made some brass jaw covers which are really nice to have. One more done and already looking for the next one. This forum has ruined me.

I found this Columbian 603 1/2 vise yesterday and couldn't resist picking it up. It seems to be in really good condition. The asking price on it was $79.00 and I got it for $71.00. How did I do?

I think you did fine. I picked up my 973 1/2 parker for $75. For a vise in good condition like that I would be happy. Especially if you're in a vise poor area.

That is a solid vise that will last a lifetime. I think you did good.

For the second time this year I have ran into this guy named "frank". Frank is a buyer of machines . He buys old American made iron and ships and sells to Mexico and China. He has deep pockets and is cleaning up . He's impossible to out bid. I wonder if any other members have encountered This kind of "threat" to our American Iron? Any suggestions on how to handle this guy the next time?

Never heard of that but it makes sense. China can't produce any tooling that's worth a damn so the cheapest and next best thing is to pillage quality used.

Nepbug: so tell us where you found that little Rock Island hiding? where are you located because it doesn't say in your profile?

i'm thinking you might own another vise or old tool since you bought a big vise so happy to see you finally joined Garage Journal's forum so you can show us more and maybe ask a few questions.

welcome
Thanks for the welcome, I'm in the Denver, CO area. I'll make sure to update my profile and try to be a little bit more active.

Big dude, that is...

If restoration and resale is in its future, this is a good place to sell it...

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!

Those are thin on the ground...

Restoration is definitely in the future, but it will only be sold if I don't have the room for it anymore or if I trade it to my father in exchange for my grandfather's Reed.

Nep,---You been lurking around here a long time.---But you jumped out of the gate real strong.---Going to be hard to beat your first entry.---And most of these fellows don't know what TOO BIG means, so they don't know what you are talking about.
Yeah, I definitely have been lurking for a long time, especially on this thread. So many good things going on here.

Damn, I was number 2 on that guys list in CO. I was planning to use that one in my shop for a long time if you passed on it. Congrats.
LOL, that's funny. Yeah, he said that some other guy had called him and told him he wasn't asking enough for it. Nice guy though.

My 3 year old son loves the big Rock Island 597, and you should have seen my wife's face when she came around the corner and saw it for the first time, it was great.

Outlawmws:

On the first steel vise which I sold to a GJ member, I had the following specs which included the weight, so will post it below.

Specs:

Weight --32 pounds
Jaws--4 1/2 inches
Maximum Jaw opening--6 inches
Maximum Vise Length when closed--13 inches
Maximum Vise Length when fully opened--17 inches
Maximum Vise Width--8 inches

Only info found on steel vise was a number # 301-176, which may have been by the vise mfg or could have been an inventory number by previous owner (i.e. local telephone company where it was located in their shop).

I'd not noticed the first time I looked but it has multiple pivots, ie the two front jaws pivot independently and also as a group, very nice :)

I do wonder how much force this type of vise can take?

Yes it has multiple pivots . It can make it awkward to use as a general purpose vise but for some things it's perfect .

From what I've read the patent date was 1958

you can pick columbians up pretty reasonable around here, you have a very nice vise there and its a good one i think you did good, i have a 4-1/2in rear swivel jaw columbian thats going on my weld table. that vise you have may not be that heavy but i think the only way your gonna hurt it is by putting a PIPE ON THE HANDLE WHICH IS A NO NO!!! you can usually pick out how hard of life a vise has had just by looking at the handle and yours looks hardly used

Heres another vise Im working on. When I got it one of the mounting ears was broken off. So I took my old chinese vise and cut the anvil portion off of it, then shaped it too match the others with my bench grinder. I preheated the pieces in the oven then welded them together with my mig. Ive still got a little more shaping to do to make it match the others then drill the mounting hole.

Nice job on the repair so far..
