That's true, if you factor in time spent searching/buying as well it's a full time job .... unless of course he is just the seller and has someone else do the work cheaply?

I just wanted to chime in this thread and say how much I admire the work many of you do with these. I must admit, I was a long-time reader here but never signed up or posted for a long time. One of my first posts here was because a friend broke my old (Taiwan) bench vise and I was looking for advise to find a new one:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=235261
That story had a happy ending as Jason was great enough to get me a good solid newer vise that I didn't have to worry about like I would have with vintage iron. I was also glad that my old junk vise served a purpose beyond the scrap pile thanks to BFBOB:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4481837&postcount=23238

So my first posts out of the way were quickly followed by a find that wasn't worth the price:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236512
And then one that was:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261515
And another:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=274408

I paid $5 for that little Wilton tilter and the last one was a freebie. I must admit guys, when I first joined I got a kick out of those of you with vises for avatars and vise info in your sigs, but somehow the old iron bug has bit me and I find myself reading everyday to see who found what. I keep patiently waiting and watching CL in the hopes of finding my first bullet, mostly just because I love the styling. So far everything I've found except my big Yost 32C has been small, but I hold out hope based on what I see from you guys. I just don't think there is a lot of big iron to be had down here in the deep south. Barn finds down here rust away from the humidity and salt air.

I want to thank all of you who have contributed to my affliction and I look forward to posting when I find new ones! :lol_hitti

My bought one yesterday. $20 for a big Emmert Tiger 40. Come to find out these vises are rare and there isn't much known about them. I saw a garage sale ad on CL that stated they had tools. I asked if they had a vise and they said yes and told me to come the day before the garage sale. Offered $20 and home I went.

I hadn't been searching Baton Rouge, just never thought about it. I check the surrounding areas in the other direction, lol. You sure know how to spot 'em though! That airfloat has been up there for weeks, I've seen it a bunch of times and I never noticed the vise. I guess this shows me I haven't been digging as hard as I should. As for the expensive ones, well they're just that - too expensive, lol. I'd shell out big for a big one, but I'll take my chances waiting for the small and mids at barn find prices.

Steevo,
Nice work on your Wilton. Nice looking mill. Can you post a full image?

Sure, Mark.

It is a Grizzly Knee Mill
I think it is a G0730

Yea, I had one, not much info out on the Emmert non wood vises. Well built vise if not abused, unfortunately for you someone really mis treated that one.

At the rate he is selling them he must be completing one or two a week, he has to be doing the prep with some machine, that can't just be emery paper or he'd have no fingers left.

They look brilliant, I want to know his secret :)

Loose buffs and heavy cut compound makes it go real fast. As with any powered buffing you have to watch edges to not round them over.

glad to help. I haven't looked in your neck of the woods before. But I troll tx, ok, ks, ia mo, and ne a lot. closing machine shops are a favorite target of mine. New ones are also... They need a GOOD vise!:evil:I keep a ISO add up on FB also. It nets me one about every other week . This week I scored the # 4 wilton among a few other items the owners needed to get rid of for 60.00

JB: so i looked for the vise you posted just for curiosity and only found a #5 Prentiss swivel jaw for $350 which i think is a 6 incher and it's unrestored and not sure of condition of the swivel jaw.

Bareass: BEE CAREFUL taking advise from TP because he averages a vise a day some months. just a couple minute search and i bet he found you some options you didn't know of in your area which may soon be his area because i'm not sure he has any REAL boundaries.

ALL: i still remember using a wood lathe in 8th grade and still have the bowl i made. High school's metal shop was a serious shop and wish the schools would get them back in the daily routine. that said we still weren't casting vises or making lifetime tools like 36's classes.

He probably lives on the Texas/Mexico border and he sends them across the river and maybe has 1/2 dozen Mexicans that he's paying $.25 cents a hour to polish up. I know, I know...I'm going to hell anyways!

2 that are ready to go to work, and two that need some work.
Still on the lookout for a big shop vise though.

Lu-Max: so a 110 pound Wilton C2 isn't a big vise? only on the vise thread will you hear that. BTW didn't you make one of your first posts making an awesome stand for a brand new Yost? do you still own that one and forgot to post it or didn't it make the move?

how is the hunting for vises and tools in California compared to Colorado? i see vises all the time on Craigslist down there in California and have no idea of the actual condition or if they are just old ads and already sold. i'm guessing if a 110 pound vise isn't big enough are you looking for a 250 plus pounder and just anyone or which one in particular? i saw the vise you missed of TriJeff's 300 plus pounder that would have made most of us smile. if he is still married i bet we won't wipe that smile off his face for a long time after that purchase and sorry for your loss.

Trijeff: BTW any more pictures of your little 300 pound Prentiss to post? sorry for saying that the case of Pabst was only a half rack in it's jaws and just amazing that your vise is that big. Did you get your little Reed back together?

drivesitfar: I am going to get rid of the Yost vise, not very happy with it. I will put one of these others on the stand I made. So far the vise hunting out here is not that great but we'll see. I collected some 'parts' that will make an excellent and very cool stand if/when I find a huge vise which is pretty much the only thing I am looking for now. These others will be perfect for working in my shop, but I still want/need a huge one.

I completed my move to CA and settled into my new job, but I'm still not nearly finished unpacking and settling into the new home and my shop still looks like a bomb went off inside of a tool factory. My new compressor will be here next week, really looking forward to getting it. Already getting one of my sheds set up for it.

The Jaws don't even line up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't say it was "NEW OLD STOCK", I just thought it might sell pretty quickly...
I don't bump into 4C's everyday and the last one that I recall coming up on eBay sold for $1,650...
I am not scared of the jaw alignment issue, I've fixed worse.

Well I never, a Record No 46 has turned up on eBay. These are rare.

It's missing a jaw...

How would one source a "jaw" for one of these on the other side of the pond...

As a Yank. married to an English Rose...

British stuff is one of my vices...

Once had a Morris Minor Traveler, that I used to race everywhere...

And, nobody knew...

That "Vise" has numerous "Vices"...

And...

In that condition, and needing two new jaws...

I think it's price is a hundred quid too high...:shocking:

I reckon you'd easily get new jaws made by a model engineer over here for a reasonable price.
The price I'd say is warranted based on the rarity, have a google and see how many pictures you can find of one of these .....

That's what it's intended us is, live outside vise. All the others live inside :)

I'll have to take some pictures, to date I've resisted, I'm not really that bothered about vises

I have seen many Record brochures, first time I have seen this model, and the first 10" jaw vise (250 lbs). not withstanding some of the cheaper Chinese imports.

I'm assuming that as it's only 10lb heavier than the 8" it'll probably be the same size as the 8" but with the jaw area made wider. There are photos of the 8"one earlier in this thread :)

That's what it's intended us is, live outside vise. All the others live inside :)

.....

I reckon it deserves a good clean up and some paint before it lives outside, it's quite an old man now ;)

I believe you ....... ;)
