Ex: except for the little marks on the top of the static jaw that Morgan 88 looks pretty nice. it has it's pipe jaws that are usually missing and the swivel base so i'd probably go for it if no shipping and a 10 minute drive. it's a solid vise and Parker makes that exact model too so it must have been a good design.

Vintage: i agree you had a busy day with your Record vice. i know they are a bit difficult to take apart with the closed end of the dynamic jaw so tell us how to get it back together and why it was that much more difficult?

nice work

Here are a couple of my record vices.
Both older Made in England models of excellent quality that should last forever.
It didn't really need it, but just for cosmetic reasons the 52 1/2D woodwork bench vice was a full bare metal re-build. Where as the no3. just had a grease and oil change on the weekend.

Do any of the Wilton experts out there know the dimensions of the Wilton #4 - height, length, width, of the body and length of just the lead screw?

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

JKB

I have a couple sitting on the bench waiting to be restored. Both have a swivel base. How do you want the measurements? with or with out the base?

Hey,

Well I did end up with a few vises ... BY ACCIDENT LOL bought some boxes of stuff at an older gentlemen's storage unit after my buddy and I had bought a 10 Inch Radial arm saw craftsman and a delta 6 inch jointer both for a 100 bucks. He was wanting to clear out boxes of old hardware and some hand tools so just kind of looked and said sure 50 bucks and loaded it up. Well I found this NCM_0218.jpg and this NCM_0223.jpg in different boxes and this NCM_0222.jpg which I am keeping since I do not do wood stuff often and usually have to play around with clamping it to my bench etc it might come in handy. The other vise and tool box are in the classifieds here before ending up on FleaBay .

Cypher

Oh And Outlaw >>> "I will be looking later for a blacksmiths leg vice and that will most likely be the only other one I buy." LOL

I did not set out nor even know these were in the boxes so PFFFTTT :}

I just had a difficult time with it because in order to put the dynamic jaw in, you have to have both the ram and the screw lined up just right, and its tight enough that it isn't easy, but loose enough that you can get it at a very subtle angle. Not to mention the screw kept hanging up. If I had a second set of hands and wasn't worrying about damaging the fresh paint it wouldn't have been too bad. I also just had bad luck getting the washer in place, and it kept getting stuck, meanwhile the nut kept popping out and wedging it out of alignment. It is really the sort of thing that is very difficult without an extra hand. Plus it would probably help if I thought to put the pin holding the nut in before I tried to install the pin at the handle end....

Oh yeah, and you really need 3 hands to put the nut back in. I had to use my shoulder to keep the jaw from moving while turning the screw and trying to line the nut up, as you can't put the nut in until the vise is mostly assembled

A buddy sent me pic's of a Columbian 205 vise. I noticed it said "Columbian Howe co. "on it . I told him I'd ask the GJ guys to give some incite as to when Columbian used that name. Sorry no pic's .

Vintage: thanks for the details of a Record re assembly process.

Lu-Max: Wow. 3 keepers in one day, but sine you already bought an 8 inch Columbian this week and already own the Wilton C1 and C2's i bet you don't need any of them. is a Fastenal store near you? nice looking PW anvil and one of my favorite makers.

TP: not sure what the HOWE or HDWE might mean, but here's my old Columbian 205 if you want to compare to yours. mine is now on another GJ member's bench and I think he has since made pipe jaws for it.

Nice scores, LuMax! You talked to Mark, huh? He was supposed to be hidin' a "mint" (as he put it) 8", but it turned out to be a 6" Parker and he's keeping it. I was interested in the Dawn but he wanted $150, so I passed ... hopefully you were able to get a better price as part of your combo pack ;) Once again, nice scores!

Love the peter wright anvil! Got a 142# one sitting on a wood block outside the door of the shop. I have done some projects in a couple different blacksmith shops, and its as nice an anvil as any I have used

Lu-Max: i agree with CW that your Dawn offset vise is for holding vertical pieces and getting a full jaw width on them instead of just the side of the vise jaw.

Fraggles: welcome to our forum and the vise thread. very nice looking old Record. looks like you did a very nice job restoring it so was that your first vise restoration or do you have more to show us and post?

Gonna have to start hunting Craigslist for more records now.. All out of project vises (at least until I see drives, and I have something special in mind for that one)

Might do a restoration on an old rivet buster I picked up recently. Not a vise but ots pretty cool so I'll post a pic or two. Old American iron

:hellobye:

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

Here are a few photos of some of the other vices I have.

Record No.1 3" jaws, with a thick coat of Hammerite .

Record 1Ton 4" jaws with rather terrible white lettering :shocking:).

Record No.2 3.5" jaws I restored this one a long time ago, and have been using this as my main vice on portable bench because of its compact size. :)

Record 34 4.5" jaws. Bought this sometime ago just because it had a swivel base. Plus it was cheap :D

Record 36 6" jaws - I left this unpainted as I like the raw look.

Herbert revolving vice -missing flat and pipe jaws. 3" one side and 2" on the other. I also left this unpainted because I like the bare steel look. This was very rusty with patches of green with a red face plate.

Record 55 woodworking vice. 6" jaws/width. Got this free, and haven't had the need for it yet.

Parkinson 8F 5" jaws. I have the jaws. I bought this on Sunday. It was very, very rusted. It'll need a new handle/tommybar and a new spring for the quick release.

Does any UK member know where I can source a replacement spring? :headscrat

Thanks for looking :D :3gears:

Beautiful collection Fraggles. You do some excellent work. Can you clarify what the 1 Ton rating on the 4" indicates? I've never seen a weight rating on a vise before.

It's something to do with jaw pressure, the 36 is rated at 2ton and the 112 at 2.5 ton

EDIT: It's the average clamping pressure according to the current Irwin/Record workholding catalogue
