So my latest resto for my collection I found the same day as the Plomb I posted a few days back... a Proto 5450 1/2" drive long handled rat.... nearly 16" long! Here it is, how I found it, in the bottom of this tool box:

wooooow that is really big change  a Proto ratchet its really tough we use Proto tools in our steel plant

You wouldn't happen to have a snap on lr42, or lr/sr84 would you?

I've got a great coming up for you all, progress is slow as we've got a new little one at home now, but I'll post some pics when I get time. Here's a teaser:

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1421554151.018615.jpg
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1421554209.258489.jpg

Anyone know where I can get repair parts for the flex head? Or another one of the direction levers? (These are good, but I have another iron in the fire).

Lastly, anyone of you looking for vintage ratchets of literally any brand let me know. Hamilton tool is a place I frequent and can score you plumb, etc ratchets at will and cheaply for the most part.

Chris

I guess this qualifies as a vintage ratchet? There's a wooden knob on the other side. I haven't done anything to clean it; I'm more interested just finding out what the heck it was for. There's no name or patent date on it.

great ratchet  i think its like UNIQUE RATCHET WRENCH WILL B LANE CHICAGO ILLINOIS gear mechanism but bigger size ,i think yours is 1" square?

I did a partial restoration on a Proto 5449 that I acquired yesterday. Some of you guys would have probably taken it a bit farther but I did this completely by hand. I can say that it's restored to 100% working order after being frozen.

All I used: Pumice soap and water, plastic bristle brush, scotch brite, then oiled.

its heavy rust !! :eyecrazy: by using normal cleaning this is good result but i am sure rust will come back very soon:sad: because its not removed completely

Tried to PM you but says you can't get them.

I'll see what I do I can pull off it. Not sure of date code or anything, scored it on eBay cheap. Looking at a lr42 also, and then I'll probably slow back some. I'm assuming mid to late 50s because similarity to lr42 head.

I need to finish these and probably downsize, as I have way too many ratchets at this point.

You don't have any lr42 or sr84 snap ons do you?

Thanks,
Chris

Here's an "after" shot of a recent acquisition. The handle is pretty beat up, but I believe the unfinished ratchet stud/gear indicates it is original, correct?

A couple questions... Is there a source for the direction lever retaining clip as this one broke during disassembly? I actually could use 2 as my spinner ratchet had the same broken clip when I bought it. Also, is the unfinished look of the direction lever from wear/age, or do some of these come without a chrome finish?

I need to snap a shot of a 1/2 inch I just picked up as well. Great opportunity for a group shot :D

The retaining clip on a few newer 1/2" will work. I have a few of those with and without check direction lever. I'm not sure but I think the unfinished ones are from a rebuild kit?

I think the clips from a 44985 or earlier models will work for you though.

Looks good btw!

Vertguy - Those parts are original. The rebuild kits had black anvils (stud/gear). The selector switch was polished pot metal and most rebuild kits didn't include the Butterfly style selector because they were only available for 4 years. It's very rare to find one of the original kits that include the proper selector. The one you have is just age faded.

As for the retaining clip - I haven't found a source for just the clip. You will need to find one from a modern rebuild kit that works, or find a donor ratchet. Some of the teardrop ratchets will have the same, or similar clips. Although, some of the Long Lever clips are a different size and may not work. It's a **** shoot.

Vintage rebuild kits sometimes show up on ebay, but there can be competition to get them. The BIN ones that show up are usually scooped up very quickly.

As you can tell from my avatar, the Butterfly Teardrops are my favorite style of ratchet. Welcome to the club.

Thanks for the info!!! This is actually my 4th butterfly as I also have a 1/4, 3/8 spinner and a 1/2. As with all my recent purchases, I did not know these existed until a couple months ago... And eBay makes it way too easy :D

Interesting to know the selector switches are just polished as my others must not have seen much use as as they look plated.

Here's a restore on an S-K 40970 1/4" ratchet I got this week.....

When I got it it wouldn't switch to the off position....when I got home and opened it up she was dry and rusted....not a bit of grease anywhere!

So, I gave her the full spa treatment....

These are all before restoration because they work fine as is. Snapon S71 and FV71 from my grandfather, and an Indestro 6272 from an estate sale. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1424126668.053638.jpg
Snapon were engraved by my grandfather. That is alright, we have the same initials.

hi everybody

this is a Lane "Unique" 1/2-hex drive ratchet , marked with "Will B. Lane" and "Chicago Ill. U.S.A." forged into the handle, with a "Pat. Jan. 14, 08" patent notice below. The reverse side is marked with "Unique" forged into the handle and the finish is plain steel.

The patent date corresponds to patent #876,680, filed by J.P. Bartholomay in 1907 and issued the following year.

thank you for watching ...

Hey Faisal,

Nice work restoring the finish on these tools.... That P&C ratchet in particular.

Your signature says you're a C-Man tool collector, but I notice you seem to be spending a lot of time with Plomb these days...

These are Craftsman U Circle 1/2" ,3/8 and 1/4 drive ratchets dating back to approximately 1944-1948. have been made for the war effort of WWII. The U circle would indicate that this ratchet was made by Plomb / Pennens, for Craftsman.

Here is my Armstrong S-51 ratchet I inherited from my grandfather. It is a pretty nice tool, but I am not sure how to restore it. It doesn't look like it was ever chromed. I will post the second half of my restoration when I figure out how to get it apart too...I read you need a special tool.

Faisal, how do you clean up the metal handles and latches? Do use a wire wheel? If so, is it brass or steel? Do you use polish on the metal? Tell me how to get my handles and latches to look like that. Jim

hi DuroChrome

its my pleasure to help you to restore your ratchet, i have restored same type of Armstrong ratchet before but it was 3/8-drive F-51

1-you need needle nose plier to rotate the bearing plate counterclockwise through the two hole on the bearing plate

R26tNYL.jpg

2- after that take the gear out then rotate the lever counterclockwise Until it comes out ,becareful of bully ball it will fall while taking the lever out

lre4aHk.jpg

if you want more help please ask

thanks

hi jim

yes i used steel wire wheel to remove the rust then i used 400,800 and 1000 grit sand paper to To remove scratches and make it shine.after that i applied Flitz LQ 04535 Polish Liquid and this is the result :) but the most important is Patience. take your time and enjoy

you have to remove the old paint by wire wheel then cover the handle and latches .apply primer first then paint

i used krylon dual paint +primer spray hammered gray .i made three coat 8 hours between each coat ,then leave the box 3 days to dry (this my way :) )please do the painting job in open area and use mask and goggles.
