Just to add one more comment on this 519X color question, I recently painted my 5191 with Valspar Cobalt Cannon, as it seemed a pretty close match to some of the remaining paint:







Today I compared the last bit of remaining paint from my 5195 (on the top of the swivel lock screw) with Valspar Cobalt Cannon and Plastikote T10 that I just received.







To my "in-person" eye the T10 is just slightly lighter than Cobalt Cannon. Maybe both of them could be a touch bluer. I doubt anything else not custom blended will be a closer match.

Nice match!
I might grab that color to paint my rock island.

That's not a true bullet it's a tradesman series.

CY: it looks like there is a little rust on the slide of your new wilton so it might need a little grease. nice find and it is a nice Wilton Tradesman vise that should last you a lifetime if you don't use it as an anvil or as a press.

The Wilton 1765 Tradesman is a damn nice vise...but the term "Bullet" refers to the Machinist Series...

The attached photo is of a 1755 and 500 will show the difference...

The "comparable" machinist vise in size would be the 600S which weighs over 150 pounds...

Your vise will do anything you need, and if it isn't abused, it will last for generations...

Congratulations on your new 1765...

Hello all, I picked up this Woden 186E/7 quick release vise. 4 1/4", 87 pounds . Actually I traded it for a wilton mechanics vise. The quick release pops off underneath every now and then besides that it functions fine. If anyone cans post a photo of there underneath and release handle that would be great. Any other info would also be appreciated.

They're a good vise. You'll likely find it much more pleasing to use than the Wilton.

The QR setup generally appears fine. Only thing I can possibly say from those photo's is that the front plate which holds the lever may be slightly bent, (the lever shaft should be parallel to the slide, normally), and at least one of the countersunk screws holding that plate on looks to be too small. The head appears sat way too far down into the countersunk hole to be original.

When exactly does it tend to pop out? Is it when the slide is at full extension, or can it happen at any position? Always worth checking that there's no claggy old grease in there, gunging the mech up too.

Here is my 9-500 bullet on the left and my formerly owned 1760 tradesman on the right. The tradesman is still a beast of a vise. Nice find

A quick google search shows very little on Rock Island No. 74, so that makes it kinda neat in my book. That, and the huge looking swivel base. If I was in Charlotte, I'd have 2 new vises in my backseat today!



Blue, the one you should be looking to get is the $50 Wilton I Posted a page or two back. I agree with you on the price, though. Too rough for that.

That rock island appears, at least to me, to have a replacement handle installed. I've never seen a RI with that style of operating nut. It looks like an American Scale too me. Maybe he broke it and had the AS one laying around.

The lever op vise is a Stevens lever/rapid vise. Those are really cool and would be a great addition to any collection. I want to say Bl00 has a rather large one in his collection but I could be wrong. Somebody on here picked up a big one for peanuts long ago but the tiny ones, although rare, seem to be more common

I just saw one on ebay yesterday, only it in true ebay fashion was listed as good condition. missing lever.

Never seen one. It's hard to imagine how an operator could get the jaws tight together on a workpiece. I don't see any teeth like it had rack and pinion or something like that. You'd have to have good access to under your workbench top to loosen and tighten that big wing nut to get your swivel on.

With the lever back the jaw slides, then as you pull the lever towards you it engages teeth into teeth on the dynamic jaw to tighten and lock it.

At least the only one I ever saw IRL worked that way. That one looks a little different but the operation looks the same.

If you look closely at the photo you can see the teeth of the rack on the side of the dynamic jaw.

I'd imagine a similar sort of cam action is in use in the side lever ones

If that were near me, I'd be on it, might even pay his price if no issues and as large as he infers. On a side note, I have one of those anvil mandrels, looks just like the one he shows laying on the floor with the long half round section and then the flat area. Anybody have any info on the use of one of these?

Thanks Fretters great eye on the front plate being bent. I cleaned all the **** off the spring, took most of the bend out of the lever shaft and seems to be working good. Once again thanks for the help.

It's completely from aluminum.

It's a cool accessories, but little pricey. So I made table clamp by myself.

Possibly WW2 vintage, it's not in the Buck & Hickman 1935 catalogue but is in the 1953 catalogue. B&H had no catalogues between those dates because of the war. Not sure when Woden stopped making them.

CW: that's about what i would have guessed on 02's Woden vice. when did Woden move to Japan or Taiwan if you might know? i was thinking maybe late 60's early 70's, but not sure.

You'd think that having been an industrial mecca for so long the place would be a vise smorgasbord .
I didn't have luck selling either and ended up giving one away.

Even the youngest of Woden's is a fair age then. Anyone have an idea as to when the design change with the Woden emblem happened? Seem to recall that it changed to a slightly less fancy style, later on in life?

1. The jaws appear to have been smooth originally. Is this normal?

2. There is some "play" in the screw behind the Parker horseshoe. What normally causes that?

Nice pair, (thankfully I can say that without getting slapped, in this case ). One thing I do seem to note is that the swivel bases seem to crop up more frequently over your side of the pond too. Can't remember the last time I personally saw one over here.
