Exactly as you say, the 34 is either cast steel or malleable iron (depending on age) and the No 4 is plain old cast iron. The price difference would probably be 4 to 5 times as much for the 34 (if it were still available) as the No 4.

The current version of the 34 is the 84-34 which is a merging of two vice models.

EDIT: I'd have the 34 any day of the week over a No4. In fact I have 2 No 36's and a No 34 but none of the mechanics vices unless you include the baby No 00.

Thanks Wabbit! Any reason for the "P" in the grade name?

Would you say the 34P is a desirable vice? Approx value?

The P stands for Plain screw, if it didn't have the P it would be a quick release version.

It's a nice high quality vice, not a cheap mechanics vice.

EDIT: probably worth 40-50 quid as a plain screw over here and 50-80 as a quick release going by past auctions on eBay.

Well it's definitely of the later design as it doesn't have the tear drop end to the vice main screw and the base is also the newer stronger design. Let me find the comparison I did on the 36's as I might have put a date there.

Records 1963 catalogue shows it with the teardrop, B&H 1964 shows it with the tear drop also but the '71/72 catalogue shows it with the modern end the same as yours.
So it's late 60's onwards then I guess.

There's a comparison between the late and early designs of the 36 (which is just a bigger 34) here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4696404&postcount=59

For somebody in the Seattle area this seems like a very fair deal to me. $400 for a Wilton 600 6". It looks decent in the photos but you know how Craig's List photos go. I'd buy it but I don't like flipping the heavy stuff.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/tls/5056123035.html

wilton machinist bench vise - $400 (sammamish)

wilton machinist bullet bench vise w/ swivel base, 11inch openning.

If you ever wondered what a brand-spanking new Wilton C-0 (10200) looks like when you only paid $225 for it, it looks exactly like this:

Oh, there was also a small-ish UPS shipping charge so the total was just over $250.

Thanks for the heads-up TriJeff, I now owe you 2, count them, yes, 2 beers!.

BTW: This completes my Wilton "C" collection, I now have one of each (photos soon).

:)

They are all good but the American ones are a bit more brute force and ignorance while the British are a bit more designed to save metal, I think I prefer a good English quick release vice.

Lu: nice find with TJ's assist.

ALL: i probably could google this but thought i'd ask what part of a pound a quid is? i know a pound used to be about $2-$2.50 vs. $1 and might be about $1.5 now but then you throw in quid, schilling and of course the new Euro that the country of Greece might not have any now and i'm having problems knowing what a good vise costs. do tell those much wiser and more google talented than i.

Quid is just another term/name for £1. :) Shilling is pre-decimal, so no longer used.

And a Schilling spelled that way is an Austrian coin.

The Euro of course is just a cruel joke.

There's something interesting about that vice, it has a new style main screw (not a tear drop type) but it has Steel written on it. I've only seen Steel written on the tear drop ones.

Finally found some online auctions in my area and have been able to grab a few decent vises.

First is a 4" Wilton bullet, paint is so thick I can't get a part number but it's a nice midsize vise. Look to be homemade aluminum jays, good for my "light work". Overall good shape, just needs a scrub and paint. Not bad for $50

Just won this at auction today, too far to check it out before bidding but 3 or 3.5" Parker is my guess. Original wrench for the swivel nut, looks in OK shape. $100

Won this one too, had to stretch a bit to $125 to get it. Guess this is a C1, again looks to be in great shape with jaw knurling in great shape. May be missing the swivel handle.

Wabbit and all our British friends...

I just bid on that Record 35, I posted earlier...:bounce:

And...

I looked up a Record 36 on Ebay...

Williams Tools has a new one at 1,001.23 Pounds Sterling...

At the current exchange rate...that's approaching $ 1.600.00!!!

Do they have an 8" version of that vise (vice)???

I already PM'd JZiggy and Shiftless, hopefully one of the GJers from the east bay got this one.

Bagged it!
A Chicago era 9400 with mint looking jaws and only a couple of notable flaws.
Missing horse collar washer in front with the usual 3 broken off little mounting screws.
Frozen slide. Gotta finish building that electrolysis tank!
IMHO, Still an Ok deal for $60

Thank you Lu-Max!

I've been putting off some major rearranging in my shop for far too long, so I used the opportunity to get a few family photos. I barely got started on sorting out the shop but I did manage to wrestle most of these into cabinets for temporary storage after the photo session.

I present the "C" family (including a Baby Bullet for scale).

Of course just when you start thinking that the C-3 is massive, along comes a 608 to put things into perspective.

Now, where did I leave my truss?
Pretty certain I am going to need it after today.

Lu-Max, you should sell me that Columbian, it doesn't match and it's not fair that it will be giving those elitist Wilton's a inferiority complex.

Nice collection by the way.

Lu: nice family photo and you might swap out your big columbian with a vise like my Wilton 606 SJ would look awesome next to your group. so keep an eye out for another one because mine isn't for sale. the 606 might be as big as the C3, but since i haven't found C3 in the wild yet i'm not sure. mine weighs 190 pounds

Dagny: very cool working farm iron. i think your Parker is for sure over 100 years old and maybe a few decades older. might i suggest buying a nice pair of copper jaws like are on my Rock Island 577 for your Parker that will save your jaws and also be easier on your chain saw chains and other projects. $35 for Wilton 6 inch copper jaws on Ebay with a seller i don't know personally, but I've ordered more than a few of them.
