I was just stating my opinion, which yes, we have tons of on the internet, that someone paying that much for a Wilton 1740 (kudos to TJ for getting that price) probably (again my guess & opinion) does not care or notice much how crisp the anvil finish is. They are paying the big bucks because it is a SO, and they possibly have a bunch of their SO tools in that neon green, and they are plain & simple big SO fans. No different than anyone buying and paying a bit extra for other great American names like Harley Davidson or John Deere tools or products.

Bagged: i thought you guys might know me a little better than to think i'd be hard on TJ when he sold his Snap On for a decent price. i usually don't criticize and about 99.9% of the time i'd like to think i make a positive post.

i do remember a member asking us (Vise thread members) what the best vise to buy new was and i made a quick post maybe on my cell phone telling him to buy a Wilton C2 because he didn't say price was an issue. then he posts up an hour later and says that vise is $1300 and thinks i'm a jerk for mentioning that. he didn't check the classifieds to see i actually had one for sale to a member for $550 which eventually sold to another GJ member. i still think Wilton C2 vises are maybe one of the best new vises made and wouldn't have sold mine, but sadly I have to sell some of them so the Reed 2C bumped it off the bench. i can't buy a new 1940's Reed 2C that might also be a better vise than a Wilton C2.

of course I've put in a jab in every now and then because i'm only human, but usually in good fun. i'm far from the expert on this thread and still just here to learn and help some members if i can.

Drives, I would love to see one of your vises restored by your hands. Maybe some day you can get around to doing one. Maybe you have restored one, I might have missed it. You have all the knowledge with all the pictures and ideas GJ members have shared. Taking criticism is part of posting your work and everyone has a different idea of how vises should be restored. I bet TJ has many hours of work in restoring his green Wilton and I can only imagine the hours being put in on his 98. It really helps to have a milling machine when restoring any vise let alone a lathe and surface grinder.
I got a bunch ready for paint and will post them when they are ready and would love to hear criticism on what I should do better on my next batch. I am still learning, reading and getting ideas from everyone here.

Sharp (pun intended) :thumbup: If you want to add a bit of polish put some mothers mag or megs heavy cut or similar abrasive paste on a rag and carefully go over the bare surfaces.

my pal(and fellow member)twertsy hooked me up the other day w/ this wilton bullit. i've been looking for one for a few years.

it got me looking at this columbian that i've been using for at least 10 years. i might freshen it up. i bet it would be a 2 day(3 tops) project.

Any way , I have this material the was used as friction wear pads in an old slip stick crane. I'm considering using it as jaw inserts in some vise's ... mostly hobby size but maybe a couple of 4" Wiltons as well. I have no idea what this material is . It stands incredible pressure. I placed it on my anvil and hit it with a 2 pound hammer on a corner without so much as a single chip out of it. It has a fabric of some sort woven in it and it's some kind of resin or polymer. The cranes was a 50's model so it's nothing new. Today's wear pads are nylon. Thoughts?

That looks like G10, we use now in making knife handles, if I remember
right G10 was developed in the aerospace industry as an insulator.
G10 uses a fiber woven mesh as a substrate in a polymer mix
Paper micarta is the same but uses paper.
Linen micarta uses linen, Mom's fine napkins if you are making your own.
Carbon fiber is much the same.

Kevin: i can't say I've posted up a vise yet that isn't farm fresh or that i wanted to brag about cleaning and greasing and putting some BLO on. if i had access to my benches and grinders and buffers i'd probably have a better chance, but about the time i get ready to start up an E tank or doing a day or two vise restore another steel fab company closes down and i'm picking stuff up and shoving it in every open space i lease or own. how's that for an answer? yes i have the knowledge, but not nearly the skills some of you have possessed your entire lives. i'm catching up though.

Nuts: Did you hit every one in that post? i get 12 on my main page and it seems like they rotate for some reason. i have no idea why either. :dunno:

Zoomie: i have a similar issue without any bling and not quite as many in my vise family as you have.

I have an old Parker on the hook, but it has a broken mounting tab. Its half there, other half is missing, so not completely gone but definitely missing half. 6" combo vise, otherwise decent shape. How much would you penalize the price for the damage?
