.... I would love one of those stands, you could drag it outside for some jobs as well, or drag it to whatever you are working on :)

From what I've noticed, leg/post vices are commonly clamped to these stands. I'm assuming that these would be universal for some larger bench vices too, and could be a way to get hold of a stand? Unless you're talking those with with extra features e.g rack etc?

Don't really know why I picked this up today, since I already have one, but it was cheap. $40. Probably because I didn't have a swivel base. Starrett 924, its in very good shape. Missing one jaw screw, shouldn't be hard to source. Wish it was larger but I may just bolt it down at work and use it.

I'm not gonna complain about finding vises, I have found more than what I need locally. However, I can't seem to find any combination vises for reasonable prices. There is the occasional Wilton c2 listed for $500-$800 and beat to dust. But that has been it for the last year. I'm starting to wonder if they just aren't used in my region of the world.

One day it will happen, there's quite a distance between us though and of course English miles are much longer than American miles due to the price of fuel :p

Having a vehicle which is thirstier than an Irishman during a free drinks hour doesn't help either. :D Good fuel economy, four seats and a good load carrying capacity, (read that as meaning that I can fit loads of rusty old tat in :D), seems to be a nonexistent combination either.

It'd definitely be well handy. They look good too, which is always a bonus.

Hi all,

there is a 5" Craftsman 5198 in play:pimpflash. Does anyone have a fair valuation for this? Looks in good shape.

Edit: apparently 107 lbs?

Edit #2: OK, found the posts on it from a day ago. It's Pinchpoints, and the Seekers of that marque have the URL.
Obviously need to read the board more religiously

Thanks,
Thrumcap

My price range for a nice 5" vise (100 lbs give or take a few), depending on what it is, is around $150. Due to the craftsman rarity, double it??? I wouldn't pay more than that, but i'm sure someone would.

Just one of the stands in general. File racks and the like would be easy enough to add if needed. One of those you linked to would work a treat.

If you have about an 8 foot long bench, one at each end works great... :D

Well thats not a bad idea :willy_nil Just another project for someday.
Too bad I don't have a bench that large and when I refinish my wood top the Milw. Morgan 50 is getting bolted to it.

Man, I'm so jealous. I have no vise at all and cant ever find one. Where do you guys find these awesome, heavy vises? I would love to have a big chas parker or columbian or reed or.....:). If any of you kings of vises want to help me acquire a vise I would sure appreciate it!

Craigslist is one channel for starters..... there are some intriguing 4" and 5" on there in IL/OH/MI area.... the monsters appear less frequently......

Well the fine people at ebay have the calculator jammed because of a bid. So I guess I either relist it or give some new shipping quotes. I can ship two pieces with usps and keep them way under 70#. I will look at shipping charges for this and see if it's cheaper.

I shipped a 205# blacksmith vise (235# total packed) more than 2/3 of the way across the country for $140 using Fastenal. Check it out.

EDIT: that's including up to $5K insurance

********, that's some good jaw fitment for a first timer.

I foresee a ton of filing in my near future. Just need to clean up the jaws, finish the last cuts for the pipe jaw, do another coat of paint and harden the jaws.

Looks like a different mounting system for the jaws than my vise has. Mine actually has the pockets for them to fit in like the usual combination vise would. I have a few ideas, and I'm sure I'll make it work.

you can never have too many tools

PinchPoint, I have an inspection question for you. I've had two of this style vise in the past, a 5196 & 97. The 96 was fine but I found, after cleaning, that the 5197 had a hairline crack on each side of the slide support shelf. They were nearly invisible until the iron was cleaned and closely inspected. Obviously I was disappointed. Could you please look closely, in good light, on both sides to see if you're able to notice any cracking here? I've attached a photo, the cracking, if any exists, would be located where I put a red line. Thanks.

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH. Perfect day to paint my new 2.5" toddler bullet. Painted it and sun cured it only to have the old plastic tablecloth I use blow up on it and weld itself to it RUINING my paint. Now i need to bake the hell out of it, wire brush it and repaint it.
