$75 on CL a little NE of Pittsburgh, not an old guy though. Mid to late 30's, wish he did seem like an old guy to me.

You're right Drives, he was asking $75 and held it for a few days while I was out of town. Great guy, not every Clist seller would've held it while he was getting bombarded with offers.

Then there's no NJ hurricane 5198?

Now I remember! It was a 51xx but not a 5198 that survived the hurricane. Another member one here posted its restoration. I think it was a fixed base model

To add to the unusual Record wood vice (which is the exact same casting as the Parkinson) I also have a Woden of similar design ... but slightly different

Ohhhh, CW... usuck, usuck, usuck, for that Parker...

CW, You **** Big time for the Parker. And on July 4th weekend no less. I'm going spend tomorrow writing the Declaration of Reclamation. Remember what happened with the last Declaration we wrote.

CW: so far i thought Dawn vices from Australia were the only company making those offset vises. another vise of yours i'm going to have to put on my list. very cool.

that Parker is nice too and is it missing an upper swivel pin or did that model have a wrench?

That Fortis is interesting, It offsets opposite from the Dawn versions. . So is that a north/south of the Equator thing, or is the Fortis for lefty's?

Thrum: thanks for the measurement of the handle on the American Scale #79 vise. has your weather warmed up enough to paint yet? it was 90 degrees here yesterday and suppose to be 95 this weekend so my paint is drying almost too fast here in Seattle. post up some more pics of your #79 when you get a chance if you have time.

Drivesitfar:

Yep, summer has shown up. It's hot and sunny, and the paintwork is done on the Records....now for metal cleanup.

And onto the copper work on the Parker......

Outlaw: That's a good question, I was chatting to a mate the other night, he is right handed and always uses the right side of a vice, however I'm right handed and always use the left side ....

No idea why all the Fortis ones are offset left and the Dawn are offset to the right tbh, but I doubt they were done for the handedness of the users.

Crazy rabbit, I think those wrenches for the Parkers are like pipe jaws are always missing. Yours should have had two wrenches and they were held on by a retaining ring on the top of the nut, obviously it wasn't a good idea because the wrenches are missing and the retaining rings are normally gone.

Funny you should say that, I picked these up at the same time .....

Pipe Jaw 1.jpg

I was going to modify them to fit an English vice that is missing it's ones but I'm not sure I can bring myself to cut them up.

Sawyer rotating vise in great shape. Small thing, just 2 1/2" jaws. Paint is Oil Rubbed Bronze. The vise responsible for all the look-alike imports you see today. Smooth operating tool here. 26 Lbs. Stamped 1942.

Here's the Parker I'm working on in semi gloss black. Since I'm putting copper jaws on it, I thought to do the lettering in copper leaf. Looks pretty good. The stuff you paint on to stick the leaf to is called size. It's close to water, so more care in application than paint. I used dollar store makeup sponges for this and makeup brushes for the leaf, which you press on and then brush away the excess. The makeup sponges are also what I used for paint lettering on the Records posted earlier.

Shipped another one out. Rochester ,NY can't seem to get a decent vise locally. His words not mine !
I just wanted to show shipping of a swivel vise. At least how I do it. Swivel base is locked and for this size of vise I use the same 5/8 plywood as the base to lock in the jaws and attach to the sides of the crate. The crate is 5/8 base with 7/16 sides and top. And if the buyer reuses the box it will be the third use of the material. Aside from the 4 mounting holes in the bottom it's a handy box to repurpose.

What are the black bands on the ends?

Found a slight hiccup on the Reed 2C. Took it apart today and the swivel base bolt had backed out quite a bit and mashed the lower threads in the static base. Stupid design to use a flat head slot instead of a hex head bolt, but oh well. My plan of attack is to get the dovetail nut out which will expose the entire hole through the base. Then take a grade 8 bolt and starting from inside the vise where the threads are good and even unused (the very top one or two) run it backwards to straighten out the threads at the end. If that does not work I will have to use a tap, which I don't currently own one that is that big. The bolt itself looks OK and once the threads are straight in the base I can address the bolt if needed. Anyone with a different suggestion that may have been here before? I think Drives is right, this may become one of my favorites. I love the fact its a combo with unintrusive pipe jaws, giving you great depth and heavy weight.

Picked up this old Craftsman the other day off craigslist for $45. Not sure on the price, but I'm happy with the deal.
Says its a 5180 and the best info I could find online about it says it's from the '30s or '40s.

I'm happy to report the 5198 arrived in MN today in the same condition it left OH. Pinchpoint's packaging held up nicely. I am glad that UPS was the carrier as my experiences with the other main carrier is poor. That along with the relatively short trip and PP's experience with shipping vises had me feeling pretty good about the vise's chances in transit. The vise hardly left an impression in the foam as pictured.

Thanks for the warm welcome and thanks for helping empty my bank account like many other members have attested to. This backbreaking hunk of iron has jumped to the top of the queue.

Gorilla tape. I use it for 2 reasons. One for added strength during impacts. and two , to prevent the handlers from getting splinters from the sawed edges of the plywood. A splinter may cause them to drop it or launch it.

Welcome to the board. Nice score on that vintage Craftsman. From what I have learned here, it seems to be a Reed vise made for sale with the Craftsman logo. A classic piece of American iron to be sure! IMHO you got a great deal. Please stick around and share your vise related adventures with the rest of us.

Before running the G8 bolt in it you might want to cut it like a tap. It will need relief to allow trash to clean out. Other wise it may do more damage.

Nice find with that Reed made Craftsman.

My signature line has a link to my 5186 restore (your vise's swiveling sibling).

Nice vise and good deal. That's a 3.5" jaw vise right? Pretty similar to my 4" Reed 104R
