Got it! A Milhoff double swivel! This morning at an estate sale for $20. It will be my next resto

you know, thats $5.00 cheaper than I paid for my Milhoff. Here's some blasphemy, I'd rather my milhoff than a 5" Wilton bullet. I use mine every day. It is half restored, just painted the vise part. Boy is it ugly now, just like its owner. :lol_hitti

LOL. I did have to get to the estate sale at 6:30am to be first in line, but it turned out that the others were not interested in the vise anyhow. . . but you never know. I can't wait to get that ugly silver paint off of it.

Hi! This is my first post. I don't think of myself as a vise collector, but at a quick count I have at least 12 so I could be wrong about that. I still use my grandfather's 3 1/2 Columbian almost exclusively. My father had it on his bench for at least 23 years and I have had it for 34 years. We don't give up on tools just because they have a little age. My current favorite vise is a 3 1/2 inch Craftsman that my brother restored and gave to me for my birthday. Some of you will know my brother as he also posts here. See if you can guess who he is by our user names. If you know who I'm talking about, you may think that he has been bragging, but I have to tell you that he is actually being quite humble. He didn't even mention the $15 Pow-R-Arm or the TWO Shop Kings. I'll post some pix of the birthday Craftsman soon. I have to start working on my $10 5-inch Craftsman first.

Welcome to the forum. Based on your above statement, you are a vise collector. No denying it. Please post pictures. Looks like you have some heirlooms.

Thanks Mark. I intend on posting pictures of the 3 1/2" Craftsman and of my first restoration. The paint needs to fully cure before I re-assemble it. It's a bit of a mystery vise and I want to see if anyone here can give me any information on it. Details and pictures soon.

And you are right, 7/8-9 is no joke.

Thats a 15in wrench. Tapping the locks.

By the way, old reeds are double lead 7/8. At least steelkilts old 4c is.

Welcome to the forum. My thought is that you become a collector when you have more than 1 vise not being used, not bolted to your bench, or not being restored for resale. Please post pictures of your collection.

Thanks Bagged. That seems like a good working definition, but if I apply that kind of standard to everything it would mean that I collect way too many things. Do you think that 25 Disston handsaws is too many?

I know that this is not generally the kind of vise being discussed here, but I have to post this one anyway. Because I made it! It is a wooden carving vise. The idea being that you won't ruin expensive carving tools when inevitably a slip causes your chisel to hit the vise.

Yea that was a bit unfair Joe.---If I had minions, I'd use them to.---As long as the minions are happy with the deals, no hurt feelings.---But I don't have a minion.---Nobody wants to be my minion.---Why can't I have a minion?
I want a minion.:tantrum2:---I want a minion.:tantrum2:---I want a minion.:tantrum2:

But I have to say, it's not just that you have friends, but you just happen to live in the Glory Hole Region of the nation for vises.---To your favor.

Oh, just kidding about the minions.---I have a couple of good ones.---Make that three.

Love the Red Seal by the way.---Minions have their advantages.

Forgot to post a pic of the bronze medallion. I had it 3D printed, it is about the size of a quarter.

Wow a Monarch, I am really jealous. Nice job on the locks especially hand filing. My finger joints can not take much hand work any more, building swivel handles are painful for me. Real nice to see you making parts, many different ways to make the same part and none are the wrong way.

On another note did you make a fixture to add flats on a ball threaded end for your handles. Gotta have a flat to match the handle diameter or it does not seat very well. You are a master making the ball ends.

Let me guess, you don't use any of them. Lol I would say you collect them as well.

Thanks Kevin,

No fixture, the ball ends are made from one solid peice. Tirn the threads, turn half of the ball, hold on the threads, finish the other half of the ball.

Using threaded rod and balls would be way easier.

So you make ball ends with male threads right?

Yeah you ****. But I also thought the 5191 was supposed to the the fixed base. Are craftsman also stamped anywhere else? Maybe the handle was swapped at some point. Or a manufacturer error.

Well it wasn't all gravy. The 5196 was the big purchase of the day at 45.My question is the model number? Shouldn't the 96 be a swivel base?

Where is it marked? Handle only or the castings also? Handle could easily have been swapped later or missed during assy at the time of MFG.
