Good find Don. That's my next target.

Hi Hounddog
I was just browsing ebay when I ran across this one and jumped on it

Great article...congratulations...one of my favorite threads on the Garage Journal

Thanks Bears Fan
I'm glad to hear that you enjoy my thread

That's a pretty cool jack. Is that actually a light on there?

Hi Coop
Yes that is a light on the top of the jack.
I went to the Pomona swap meet looking for the lens for that light and came home with this!

30ux0t0.jpg

It's 18' long with neon to light up the GOOD YEAR letters

I also found a Coats tire changer and a vintage complete police emergency phone

I have a Blackhawk jack very similar to yours, it is a beast and will do anything I've ever asked of it. I wish you luck on getting that light, from what I've heard you really just can't find them. If you happen to find 2 please put me on the list for one of them. :) I'm sure it'll look better than new when you are finished with it.

Very nice! Love the sign!

Thanks for checking in again Coop

I could hardly contain myself when I found it.
I plugged it in and found one letter broken so I took the neon pieces up to my buddy and in 1 hour the sign was all lit up. So I started polishing out the tin on the sign and the paint came back very shinny I'm in seventh heaven tonight.

Funny that you should say that because every time I go to buy something on Fleabey it says pick up only Florida somewhere

We do have a very big car culture out here.
(Thought of you when I saw this on our local CL...)
I'll tell you what to do "GO buy it and send it to me with the invoice" Thats what!!!

Thanks for the visit man

I found one that I thought would fit but it was on an old bike that the guy was way in love with $1500.00 in love so I didn't bring it home
I will find something that will work I hope
Thanks for that vote of confidence, I'll do my best not to let you down

Hi BUGTHUG

The light inside the letter cans are neon.
What you are looking at is the shot from the house back yard down the driveway past the party garage 10 garage doors on the right and the grass parking on the left as you head to the work shop in the back

Here is a shot from the other end looking to where the police box was when I shot the other picture It's about a 400 foot drive

2dblcup.jpg

Don, how is the light in the jack powered?

caddyman

I assume it is battery powered but I haven't looked at the jack that much

Thanks for the visit

Don

Have you got a close up of the light on the jack? I was wondering if some older flashlight might have the right size workings? How about a dimension of the bulb area?

Don and Bugthug,
I have heard the little cheapo lights from Harbor Freight will work and the workings do fit in the handle but I haven't gotten any further than that to date. The way it was originally there was a convex lens covering the bulb on the jack then a wire running from there inside the handle next to the release rod and a button inside the left handle hole. Mine is missing the button, wire, bulb and lens so I can't really help more than that, but here is a picture of an original lens.

Best of luck to you on finding this part.

Awesome finds Don!
Love the jack. Totally unique. I remember the police call stations from living in NY. They were on the parkways every few miles or so. I guess with cell phones all those cool things have disappeared along with pay phones.
As always, I enjoy reading your posts and looking forward to those odd bits you bring home!

You offer a good direction to go with the jack. I'll find some time next week to look it over.

That jack is calling out to me for some help for sure. the call box is something some what new to me, I have a couple of fire boxes but this police box is my first. I'll stay on the hunt for more stuff for sure.

Don, If you had two of those phone you could set them up like an intercom with one at each end of the building.

Thanks for the suggestion Simon
I have one in a fire box but I don't know who I would talk to.

I thinking about that lens that your missing Don... I saw a guy use a kit once that was for making a tail light lens. I believe it was a red one that he did. But there may have been clear and yellow available as well. I bring this up because he custom made his mold from clay I believe...the plastic ? resin hardened and a replacement lens was born... Wonder if you could find this stuff and make a replacement for your jack???

I spent the last couple of days working on the goodyear sign that I drug home Sunday

2m6jygh.jpg

I found the broken neon tube and had it repaired. Then I started cleaning the sign

29pwzeb.jpg

While cleaning it up I tried buffing out the porcelain

Before

After
24bvrjs.jpg

After buffing out the entire sign I had to figure how to mount it. I moved one transformer and wire in a plug then it was time to test out my work and it lit up beautifully

vxm914.jpg

With the help of my fork lift and my man lift ,The sign is hanging in the party garage

Great work. Its amazing to see you work on these projects, get them done, and still have time to work on your vette.

Thanks for the visit AK
The sign was a welcome change for me
The Vette took a back seat to the sign this week along with having 3 grand daughters here playing up in the game room, swimming, Disneyland and the beach.
My sweet wife took them shopping for school clothes giving me a chance for some much needed shop time today.
The kids go back to Utah on sunday and then it's back to work full time on the vette

Its nice to have some relax time. Work on these type of things seems to be a play on words since we all have a labor of love with this stuff.

Great looking sign Don, well done (as always).

On the Jack lens... failing finding a suitable replacement, know that making your own might not be worth it (obviously for those of us that "gotta have it", there's no compromise). Having made a few lenses, I would mill an aluminum replica on a lathe and then make a silicone mold from this buck. Clear cast resin is readily available to mold the finished lens if you're so inclined. Best tip I can give you for casting lenses is to polish the aluminum in areas you want a crystal clear surface finish.(silicone molds transfer to a very fine degree). Start with clear resin and if you want a different color, simply tint accordingly. By the sounds of it, you might be able to sell a few and recoup some tooling costs, LOL.

Be well,

Paul

(BTW, check out some You Tube tutorials on casting if you get serious about making your own lens)

Ak I agree
And I am lucky enough to have 6 saturdays a week to relax and play in my garages

Don, You do not have to talk to any one but think of the fun your guests would have once they found out they both worked and could talk between the two phones. :)

Simon I get it
Thanks for the great idea, I'll work on that

That Goodyear sign wouldn't fit in most garages but looks right at home in yours.

Toolfool
You are probably right. I know that the minute I saw the sign I knew just where to hang it.

Extrememly cool!

dcmus
Thanks, I do think it adds to the overall look of the gas station

 I knew you would and it should not be to hard to set up.
Do you know any ex telephone linesman or phone company employees ?
Making them ring would be the best part.

Yep Simon
I'm working on it tonight

Thanks Don! I appreciate that!

Well Coop

That's what caught my eye too

CRTDI,
Thank you for those links, they will help me as well when I get to my jack.

Don,
That sign turned out great and fits in so well with everything else, I just don't know how you keep finding room to put all of your finds.
JB

JB

That is great info I agree
