So is that patent date the actual date it was made? The only other picture I found of a different one also had that same date

Yeah. Made then and beyond into the early 1900's. I use to have a Miller Falls book showing it but I was made an offer I couldn't refuse.

Nice!

Are those Wilton wood vises all quick release? I have one I picked up and it seems to be but I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be or if it was broken.

Bagged Yeah they are. They work better with oil , not grease. And no paint on the button. They made them both with or without quick release.

Finished a 600S that was froze up and had a different swivel base on it that was the same diameter at the base plate and even the lock downs matched but only had 3 mounting tabs.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Wilton-Bench-Vises/i-VLnDGcB/A"><img src="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Wilton-Bench-Vises/i-VLnDGcB/0/M/600S-M.jpg" alt="Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug"></a>

Everything about this vise needed attention, came from a Wyoming oil well out fit and they are not easy on vises. It was never oiled so it rusted in place. Spent a week heating and pouring ATF down the barrel and finally it slid out with no beating. The horse shoe washer was cut out of a 3/16 plate and it did not fit very good, should be 1/4. I made a new washer, these guys are big, 3-1/8 diameter at 1/4 thick, welded up the groove and fit everything where it is suppose to be. While I was at it I made a new larger diameter handle, and added a ball and spring set up like the Parkers.

Made three jaws for it one having grooves for clamping bars or pipes. I just felt like making one, took a while to cut the 45 degree grooves.

Resurfaced the anvil and beat out the dust cap on a roll of lead, good way to pull the dents out.

This 145 lb vise with a 4-78 date stamp finished up pretty nice and should last another 40 years.

Try sliding under your car and looking up and there is a wasp nest with LOTS of wasps 6" from your face! Happened to me last week, I slid back out and got the wasp spray!

Been there Done that: I always wait til dusk/dark when they are all home...

And thanks for the reminder! I have one inside the back bumper of my old Samurai, and in the cowl vent, so need to go spray them down!

That stinks. Wasted money. Here's a picture of my Wilton vise to distract you from that horrible Crapsman vise experience:
IMAG1965.jpg

But you still get a Wilton mechanics vise, which is okay for lighter use.

There are almost 35,000 post in this thread, so no one knows to what you are referring to... :wtf:

Based on most of your posts, I don't know if you just have no clue about the most basic posting etiquette, or are an odd troll... :dunno:

Fraggles: Like the Swindens. :) An impressively sized pair you have there.

Anyone think that the old patina looks good on these as long as they are cleaned and lubricated? Or is it always new paint that does the trick??

Just go with whatever floats your boat. You're the one who'll have to look at it each day, so fresh paint if that's your preference else retain as much of the old finish if not. I know people occasionally rattle on about patina being everything, but you have to remember that anything you do now is technically patina fifty years down the road. Put your mark on it in a manner you see fit.

Am getting ready to restore this old vise, not sure it is worth my time?

That one looks like an unmarked Prentiss coachmakers swivel jaw.

Maybe they are ready to play "lets make a deal"

It is a rather interesting vise. Just wish the jaws were bigger than 3-1/2".

For $100 I would gladly buy it. I don't have the money to throw out for a $375 vise though.

There's a ton of rust on it also. I think even $100 would be generous. This thing needs a complete sandblasting. Also, what's the deal with getting the jaw/shaft out of this? It's not a though-hole like every vise I've used. Does it actually come out or is it locked in?

Anyone know what spray paint is a close match to this blue? I'm working on a custom order Parker for a customer.

Recent Craftsman I restored.

That vise brings back memories---same model my dad had when I was a kid. I ultimately destroyed it many years ago with saws, torches, hammers, cheater bars, etc. In retrospect, it must have been a pretty decent vise!

WOW KMS! That was a terrific job on that vise. I think you've crossed some line between restoring and rebuilding. How long did that take? The tablecloth looks good too.

Patinas can have beautiful hues & tones, which are unique to each vise. Some people love this look, others prefer them with a nice paint job....very subjective.

I snagged this Reed 414 off of CL for $25 recently. Although rusty and crusty, it is in very good condition. The swivel jaw broke loose with some gentle tapping and pivots freely with no catching. The jaws are very clean. Handle and pivot lock handle are nice and straight with a few nicks and dings. This must have been in someones basement or garage, unused, for the past 50-60 yrs. The slide on the dynamic jaw is as shiny as the day it was made where it was protected by the body of the vise. Sure, it's rusty on the ends but that will clean up.
Body of the vise is in the electrolysis tank right now. Swivel jaw is cleaned up and ready for paint. I had briefly considered trying to preserve the patina somehow but decided to go the strip and paint route. As it stands right now I'm going with Rustoleum hammered black. If that doesn't work for me I can always repaint.
Rich

In my first ever post I mentioned that I used my grandfather's 3 1/2 inch Columbian almost exclusively. When I have done a few more restorations I'm going to work on it. I plan to lube it and straighten some things but I'm just going to clean some of the grime off the surface. It wouldn't seem right for Grandpa's vise to look new. After all, he died in 1958. I have that same feeling when I see some of the restorations of old vises posted here. They shore do look purty though. Go with what you feel.

I do not have vises in my restore pile that are clean and ready to finish. Believe me I would like to finish a vise in one day in stead of 3 weeks but I choose to make them as good as I can. Thanks CRS for the kind words.

I'm hoping Balane paints his next vise in "KMScott Tablecloth Plaid".

I am gonna slap my wife for suggesting the cloth.

Thanks Firemanast.

I still have not found the vise that i will build a stand for and use it as my everyday vise, I will be starting on a few Reeds and a Paramo. So far the Parkers has my vote.

CRSINMICH How would you finish this one, I have to fix it because I just can not throw something this big out if it is possible to fix. Removing grease is great if that is all they need. Be sure to post a picture of your Grandfathers vise when you clean it up. Would love to see it. I have 9 grandsons and have a way to go to leave each one a nice vise. Got my two sons done, gave them both Wilton's on stands.

Thanks VA, you are doing a good job your self.
