Wow, thanks for letting me know, so what then is the story on the 292?
I was with him on the truck pulling things up on the upper and lower unit and it showed parts availability, when we pulled up the 292 we got nothing but he was able to find things under 290 and 291.

The kr292 was designed to go on the kr657 only. The kr290 and later 291 were designed for the 555/655, but also fit a number of other boxes in the 20" deep range.

i dont know what brand it was, but it was old, clean and bright red. upper and lower combo unit. was on the side of the road at a yard sale. i was in the work truck, no time or place to put it and it wasnt safe for me to stop pulling a trailer. big ditch, small driveways, no shoulder.

Gents: does anyone know where to find a front cover for this S-K toolbox? I bought it pretty much as you see it, and it turned me into an S-K collector. I'd like to fill the holes in the socket and wrench sets, but first I'd like to make the box itself complete.

I'd even be happy with a few pictures of a front cover - if I can't find one, I'll try fabbing one myself.

Also, can anyone confirm mid-40s to mid-50s as the age/era of this box? It is obviously the pre-Lectrolyte era, and most of the ratchet and socket drivers have the S-K diamond logo.

Thanks in advance for any help.

hey, gang. FJ, Outlaw, and everyone.
i need some help w/ this bottom box.
i can see the similarities between FJs bottom box but there are 2 glaring differences..the placement of the emblem and the bottom lid cover has a "knob" while mine has a loop/finger pull.

i thought this was 40s. i still think so, but i have some questions....

when i got it i saw the castors were all 4 bolt mounted free spinners but the 2 front ones had "brakes".
than i noticed that the mount holes for the castors also had other holes for a larger castor.
i orig thought someone in the past swapped out the castors for locking ones.
today i removed the castors and i believe they were the original ones and i was the first guy touch them in about 70 years.
flathead bolts w/ square nuts that have never been loosened.
and when i removed the castors the orig paint & dirt pattern looks like new.

square nuts pretty much went away around 1949.

the drawers roll on roller like a presteel box.
but the front of the box is rounded like others ive seen(or owned) but the back is 90* angles.

who knows this stuff?

JF..does yours have 2 sets of holes to mount a smaller or larger castor?

pix tomorrow 'cause mrs beat is out of town and i aint all that good at loading pix

Stopped at my favorite tool guys barn yesterday. I did not need these two boxes but for $12.00 for the pair I could not pass them up. He also threw in a underlined C, Craftsman 1/2-9/16 Tappet wrench.

This might be my new favorite handheld box, a WWII Armorer's Tool Chest. 20" long 11" wide 13" high.

From what I can find it may have either been for
an old WWII era M1 Garand, M1A or M1 Carbine armorers chest. It was probably issued to armory officers that were tasked with repairing and maintaining infintry rifles. It would have been issued with all of the weapon specific tools and repair parts that went with that weapon platform.

Or simply the M1 designation being model 1:headscrat

My friends dad was gonna scrap it, I threw it in the truck lol
It says made in the USA
Couldn't find a date, guessing late 80s compared to my 84 bottom box, the bottom cover has a small knob to lift it up with, I've already sanded it and repainted it to match my other two boxes

Great score! I love this box. I don't really have a spot for it and it's always in the way, but it's just so cool looking!

Fwiw, mine has the same hole pattern as yours with the same small-footprint casters.

Below is mine for reference (post #753 in this thread).

I know my phone pics aren't the best, but I think you can see the paint in the pic of the badge. It is sort of a splatter effect - lighter red on bright red. I wonder if this is how it came. Everything is like that and it is evenly done over the whole box and the light attachment. A better view (of the back):

I have RemLines and Huots that I've picked up for cheap and painted to match each other, but I think this is staying as-is. It is too good to strip and repaint! I was pretty happy for $25. :D

What's the date range on these Proto's?

Guy has it for sale 1.5 hours away from here for 40$, I'm thinking of going to pick it up. Seems like a nice box in decent shape.

That logo is pretty recent, up to 2013 I believe, before the "I-Beam" transition.

I've never actually seen a Proto box "live". Are they well built boxes?
Pretty sure it is worth 40$, and I likely will drive over to get it at some point if only to have a Proto box, like I said there isn't too many of them around here.

There are not too many of them ANYWHERE!!!

I'd do a 3 hr round trip for that for $40, but I can do so semi reasonably... whats the gas bill for you? (I'm betting that tractor in your Avitar gets about 3...)

Here is one I picked up the other day;not because I needed another tool box(I have a garage full now)but because of the unique handles. They are cast aluminum ans have an alternating pin and hole on their joining surfaces allowing them to lock together firmly. Box has some scratches and had a couple of dents(most of which I removed)but the price was right($5).

As always on the prowl for cool old stuff. Found this on cl last week. Figured it was my birthday present to myself. Only issue is that one of the latches is missing. It is an old Simonson hip roof.

csargents, No luck on the latch in the latch collection; I had the bottom of a wire bail type, but not the covered curved cap type... Sorry.

Wow, I'd have bought the whole damn lot at 400$ :( I've been looking for a reg/gray combo for a while. Just like my elusive block grinder I'm beginning to wonder if any are left around here, and how few were sold in the first place...
