So the guy that was supposed to buy my vise backed out this morning saying he can't spend the cash on a vise. This is after he calls me at 9:30pm last night saying he will see me this morning. The guy didn't have a the balls to tell me when he spoke to me but I see an email at 5:30am. Another reason I prefer selling anything online to avoid people like this wasting my time.

Veeps, if I sell anything it is a 50% deposit at a minimum. All those stands I picked up were fully paid for before I set foot on the property. It us the only way to do business. MAN, that idiot missed out on a great piece.

Yeah next time that is how I will do it. I was trying to be a nice guy and it got me screwed. At least it was a vise I already had on hand so not too much lost. At the end of the day, it was a vise that I was going to restore anyway.

Dang. That's crazy. If he tried to buy a brand new one that size he would spend at least double that if it was an American vise. I'm sure you'll end up selling it though

Thanks CRS. It's not even PT today yet. I have to see my primary physician to ensure they referred me to PT, and then schedule it. Checked my insurance online just now and still no referral. I'll find out if they can keep me off work for at least one more week too. Was puking yesterday, and had a massive headache Friday night. Felt like someone was over tightening a vise on my skull.

bagged: In the words of Gore Vidal, FUGGEM! Is there a vise museum somewhere you could put it in as a literal shining example?

Yeah I'm not worried about selling it.
I just hate people who waste my time.

Nice find BriSco. Welcome to the site. Keep us updated with lots of pics.

Bagged, your mind is in the same place as mine. I like thumper68's set up with the electrical outlets.

I like to be able to move my stand around since I have a small garage so I can't add hard wired outlets to mine. I have a large shop, I would definitely make a stand with outlets like that.

Figured that I would toss up a pic of the Simples 61S mounted and ready for work.

I love the power in the stand. My shop is in my old barn and despite running lots of power around the walls, I'm always tripping on extension cords.

I think I'm going to steal that idea for my grinder stand!

BriSco: i really like the quality of Rock Island made vises and that one should serve you well. i too doubt that yellow was the original color, but if you are going to paint it pick a color you like because you will be the one looking at it.

Doc: that old Parker and Reed are in great hands and I'm looking forward to seeing how they finish up.

Thumper: that is some stand and not a little vise either. nice job with both and pretty cool you have electrical coming up through the floor so your stand can double as a power station.

nice work

ALL: there is a guy on YouTube making a baby bullet vise from scratch. anybody see his videos yet or want me to provide a few links?

cheers

Last night I had a dream that I found replacement jaws at a garage sale for an 8" Reed.

Anyway, got my hands on a free Empire No 30 / Erie Tool Works 3" vise.

Check out what I got for free at work. They were throwing this out so I grabbed it. It's an old broken parking lot stall sign. The heavy base should be perfect for a vise stand. The post is lightweight aluminum but I'm sure I can find a use for it in the garage.
It's 30"x20 and 5/8" thick with a 13"x10" 5/8" thick plate on top. The aluminum post is bolted to it so I might be able to bolt a steel column to it for more versatility vs just welding one on.

Took the stand apart when I got home.
The base weighs about 90lbs and the little piece weighs 25 lbs

I can make a short stand with what I have in my garage like this, or just get a taller piece.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1442865053.664741.jpg
Or I can just attach it to my current stand to make it before and rollable.

I really don't want 2 vises on stands, and I like the look of my current stand, so I'll have to decide what to do.

I agree, paint it like you want.

Thanks! These are as much fun as the Block grinders, just a tad heavier!:shocking:

I would like to say that the power in the vise post was a stroke of brilliance but I saw it in a guys shop 10 years before I built mine.

I also have been following Tom Liptons baby bullet build

Here!

He is building it for Keith Fenners "Whats in your box" give away.

He is quite the machinist.

Added 3 vises this week. The Reed 204R was bought at a large flea market off a 90 year old guy named Leonard. He had a load of tools in the back of his flatbed which we leaned on while he told me stories of his life. Leonard told me he bought the Reed new and I didn't argue his price as his stories were worth every penny. Even though he gave it a quickie all over paint job, this Reed is pretty impressive how smooth and tight it is.

The Chas. Parker came from E-bay and was a birthday gift from my sons. I was so anxious to get started on it I straightened the handle and started to put the pieces in the parts cleaner before I took any before pics. I put it back together and snapped a couple befores.

The Stanley I picked up for a couple bucks at an estate sale. It's the only clamp on vise I own and I grabbed it because I thought it was cool that it was a swivel base.

Here's a small Record No. 3S I picked up at a yard sale. It was essentially unused except for some fine rust on the bare metal.

After applying the EvapoRust and a swipe of wax, here's an exploded view:

Assembled view:

And here's a shot comparing an original finish to Tremclad Gloss Dark Blue. The Tremclad is a slightly darker hue.

Hi guys, trying to buy this. Ive only seen one before, ever. What is the number, and I'm trying to be fair ? I'm giving him a Parker 974 plus cash. I thought $200 plus the Parker.

Oh and no it aint a CL or ebay sale. It is, off the grid. Fabulous no?

TO ALL: My previous post got me thinking. I don't remember anyone selling a vise or anything directly through this thread. Is that against policy or proper usage? Just wondering - I don't have anything to sell.

I think it's technically against GJ policies.

CRS: there is a classified section on GJ that i've sold a couple vises to other members, but other than the guys that shine up their vises and show them off before listing on EBay we don't actively sell vises or tools in the this or any thread. thanks for offering up the wrench for any of us that might need one.

Sandman: any other pictures or details of your stand and vise would be appreciated. thanks for posting a few of the monster vises.
