ALL: some of us have some nice ways to store our tools, parts, nuts & bolts or bits and pieces and not all of us use tool boxes. I started a thread with metal and since that is already ongoing how about a separate one for those wood ones. i've seen a lot of great ones, but can never do a search and find one so how about posting them here so we can find them easier. also some of us are handy enough to make something we see that we like and give us incentive to make one.

also if you find one that is missing a few parts and instead of throwing it in the trash want to offer it up here from somebody to restore please do if it's worth saving. i've seen some amazing wood work on some very old wood cabinets.

Since i've been mainly buying metal cabinets i don't currently own a wood one, but will soon. here's a few i like that i've seen in person or online and some here that the member that owns them might want to post and say so. Toolboxes count too if you have any old Gertsners or other machinist boxes to show off.

cheers

I nearly piped up with a "you ****" after seeing the pictures (prior to reading your post). Great topic and great pix. I would kill to own a cabinet like the first one pictured!

Riley: the member that restored that first cabinet lives not too far from you in Portland so if he sees your post you might be in luck because i have no space for it. thanks for the well wishes too and there are a lot of great wood cabinets i've seen and would like to see full of tools.

82: great point. sparks and welding splatter might be another good reason i don't have any. if i live long enough i'll have a wood shop and a metal shop sort of like school where both had their own separate areas.

Laroke: nice piece of history and an awesome looking box. thanks for sharing and my dad is 83 and his days are numbered so not sure what i'd save to remind me of him. i have been trying to find a spot for his 7th grade trumpet because i have a picture of him playing it so that might be it. great story and post up more if you have some at home or see some. thanks for posting. or my DAD might outlive me because only the good die young. my condolences if your Dad passed.

Beat: you should probably be the OP of this thread and anytime you want to act like it please do. you'll need to post up a few more of your cool wood boxes first though. cheers and thanks for the post

ALL: if you do have something to post that is yours if you might also take a few pictures of the tools or stuff inside your boxes that would be great. i'm going to start an Organizing 101 thread over in Garage gallery soon mainly because i could probably finally be my own hardware store. anybody else go to the store and buy something they knew they had a few of just because they couldn't find it? or is that just me??

One of my worst habits! My hardware selection goes a bit beyond the normal shop, but it doesn't bother me in the least. I know I'll eventually use whatever it is I collect ...

This was home made and in the back of a van. It's made from a steel frame and wood drawers. Years ago I had a huge card catalog from a library. Sadly I had to sell it. Some day I'll have one again. For now I just have no more room!

I finally took some pix of the only wood tool chest in my shop. I purchased this home-made chest at a yard sale this past summer, along with a Craftsman miter saw, miter box, a couple Stanley planes, and hand drill with misc bits for $30. I use it for storage of my vintage wood working tools.

I have posted this in the past but it's an easy to build set up that's proven quite handy. It's about 7'x2'x2'. It was given to me by an old timer who reached that point in life where he moved into an apartment and gave up his workshop.

StorageTowerComp.jpg

I added a drawer in-between the existing ones as I wanted it for small items. Runners are screwed and glued to the inside and the 3/8" plywood bottomed 1" x2" strip side rails were attached to the inside the same way. You can slide them right out and place on the bench for serious digging.

Drives: Some great wooden cab's here. Love Beats desk to complement his Gerstner.
Not sure these count, but thought I would post a few I have picked up over the years as others may enjoy.
First is a group shot during some cleaning up.
Group1.jpggroup2.jpg
The one on the left is a George Schearr & CO. that is pretty much as found. Circa mid 30' I think.
Scherr.jpg
The middle one is a Gerstner W42 chest circa 1975, on a WB20 base circa 1967.

The third is a Gerstner O92XL from about 1998.

I recently picked up this Starr chest in pretty sad shape. Not even sure I could do anything with it.

Surprisingly after some re-gluing, a little sanding, new handle and all new felt, it cleaned up quite well.

This one will be used for Niece's jewelry chest.

Here's one made about 25 years back, out of scraps and other scrounged pieces. The handles came from a discarded dresser on the side of the road.

Thanks Nine, It's huge compared to the others. My favorite is the walnut. it still bears the scars where it had been broken into when someone lost the key. I was able to pick up a replacement lock thru Gerstner which is about 20 miles away. Still doing business in the same building since 1884. Wonderful chests.

Here is one of the, if not the most famous wooden nail cabinets in the world.

Who recognizes it?

I wish these were mine! Spotted at an antique show today. Let the drooling begin!

Octagonal hardware bin, chest of drawers and my absolute favorite, an old science lab desk with TWO swing out stools. That was a little over my budget at $2200!

Thought of my fathers library card file that he picked up when the town went digital like 20 years ago. Its huge and heavy. And woods just so warm and cozy.

Drives, thought I'd quote the pic so we all know what we are talking about.
My father has it loaded with anything that fits the drawers. The standard assorted hardware, zipties, meters, whatever.

I'll grab more pics when I get over there. We've always joked that it belongs in the house. It is only finished on one side as it would have been mounted to a row of these beasts.

I came across a wood cabinet today I am considering, its about 6 feet tall with pull out drawers, the door has pegboard on the inside and the pegboard is hinged and there is more storage between the door and the pegboard.

For those of you who don't know who I'm talking about....

I have a matching bin (drawerless) to go with it.
