Here's a different one, mounting style.

Now that's what you call a swivel base. That looks a beast of a mount.

Possibly, but unless you sink it in a hole in the bench, looks like it would really put stress on the mounting bracket due to the larger than normal offset. :headscrat:

BTW, jeleous of your new post vise, that thing has some clamping power!

It has the power to induce a hernia carrying it too. :D I was really lucky with that one. I was the only bidder on it, and it was only about five miles away from me too. That one obviously had my name on it.

I really need to get my post vises finished up... Still have some welding to do on the big one (someone torched a notch in the jaws) and some welds to remove on one of the small ones (someone decided to weld the spring and mounting plate in place...)

Then derust and finish them. I've never seen a screw bigger than the one on my big post vise....

Reed 104

Came across this old fixed base Reed 104 with the "meatball" spindle. Looked like it was well used, and was missing the handle, but surprisingly the jaws were still in good shape. In addition, the original cast retainer ring for the spindle was still in the original position and there was zero backlash----these vises were precision built back then!
A couple of days in electrolysis, followed by some wire wheels, and finally a coat of rust inhibiting oil penetrant. Made a handle with some scrap rod (had to turn it down to 11/16 diameter) and cap nuts and I like it just the way it is.

I had posted pictures a while ago, and I would re post them if it wasn't for my phone loosing all my pictures.... And the vise is already disassembled. Doesn't really do it justice apart...

Once I make it a new handle, it will probably weigh about 175#.
Just the screw and nut are nearly 30 pounds....

Nice Reed! I like that finish as well.

With all of the lovely restorations that have been posted lately I almost didn’t post this one, but I decided to post a clinker just for perspective. It’s a Milwaukee Tools vise and it’s not worth the trouble. I thought that a spiff up would at least make it look presentable. The cat helps but I have to agree with Joe on this one – it’s an ugly vise.

Ex: nice job making the handle for your old Reed. just curious is it my eyes or is there a chunk missing out of the top of the static jaw. sort of like it was melted? is your new Avitar your Reed 2C or did you find a bigger Reed to use? i also like the naked vise look you picked.

CRS: interesting looking vise. shoe polish??

CRS, well it looks much better than it did. Nice job giving it new life. It's always interesting to see these unique designs. Some designer back then tried to be different. Or maybe someone from Accounting designed this one.

Yep, that's a big chunk missing, and kinda looks like it's from a torch. But it doesn't go all the way thru. I originally planned to machine it clean and bond in a new piece of metal, then paint it, etc, but my co-workers convinced me to leave it as-is.
My new avatar is indeed my Reed 2C. I just like the way it smiles at me...

Haha accounting, or maybe a Star Trek fan. Either way, nice restore.

The cat doesn't like it either, it is about to pounce on it

How old do you guys think this is
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1445947528.411374.jpg

That, old chap, is a Parkinson's Handy Vise. They closed down around late 70's or early 80's I believe, so obviously older than that. Damn good vices those are, for a non QR. The nut is cast in on those, not a separate unit like most.

That number on the side will say Rd.689821. The fact it has a round handle ball puts it quite a bit earlier. No way to say for definite, but I'd say pre 60's at latest. It also has their swivel base too, which is something you don't see often. It's listed in their catalogue:

ALL: Don’t forget that I was a teacher. Sometimes a bad example can be as effective as a good one. I’ve seen this vise inside and out; up close and personal. It may or may not have been designed by an accountant, but a small army of bean counters must have been assigned the job of finding corners to cut. The color is Hammered Black with Chrome Metallic stripes. (Don’t use CM. It just turns gray). In hindsight, it probably would have been a good vise for a shoe polish finish but it still would have been ugly. What you guys couldn’t know is that I took over a dozen pix from different angles and different lighting and this was the best one. The cat does assist me often. She’s especially good at moving the small parts that I have just left lying about. Curiosity did nearly get her a coat of Hammered Black.

Not if one is allergic to them. :D Gert once convinced me to have a cat. I spent weeks itching and mild to annoying throat irritation before I finally overcame that allergy, to a degree. Then she had rabbits, same thing. Coupled with the fact she's given me food poisoning at least five times too, (you stop counting after five or so :D), I think she might be trying to tell me something. :D

On about the food thing, what really irks me over that is the one which involved egg. Have you any idea what it's like never to be able to eat one of your favourite foods again? I mean, a Full English without egg is only ever an Almost English at best. :D

Only four bullets, 9350, 9400, 350 swivel jaw, & the 400

I am at work right now. The young lady that took my place had her second child and I will be here another month or so. I am ready to RE-retire

Make sure you post plenty when you get it back together then. :) Know what you mean about disassembled. They don't seem quite as imposing once stripped, do they. Even though you can see they're big and know everything's heavy, they're far more imposing when they're assembled.

This may be a little long winded but bear with me, I'm excited!

So this morning I started browsing kijiji for no reason with no intention to buy anything. This is how it always starts. I found a vise that caught my eye and the ad was a few days old but decided to text the person anyway. Brand wasn't mentioned but I saw what it was from the picture. Got nothing to lose, right? Owner responded and we agreed on 30 dollars. Damn it, I don't need another vise but whatever! On my merry way I go to get this thing, plus I have heard good things about original Records on here.

I bring the thing home and play with it. Tightens fine but when trying to loosen the jaws nothing happens. ****, I just wasted 30 dollars, right? Wrong. Turns out this bad boy has some sort of mechanism that opens up allowing you to slide the dynamic jaw by hand. WAY faster than a regular vise and I never even knew this existed up until now. Overall it's a QUALITY piece and it cleaned up very nice. It's practically brand new. It had surface rust on the top side only, like it was only getting moisture from that direction. No pitting at all. Hardly any use and it has a swivel base to boot!

You can see it sitting with Old Faithful, an Irwin Record no. 6. That's another story, I basically got it for free and it was brand new in the box. For 30 Canadian pesos I don't think I could have done better

Congratulations, that is a mighty fine vise you got real real cheap. Record vises made in Sheffield is a joy.

There's a couple of 7 1/4 inch ones sitting on eBay over here, both are missing the spring and one is missing the bracket. Last time I checked they were bid free and less than a 5th of that price.

An 8 inch leg vise IS very hard to find. I have 5 but I looked for many years to get the first one. They just do not show up. At auctions I have been to lately with blacksmith tools, $1000 is no problem for it. It only takes two that have to have it and that stuff is real hot right now at sales. Iron city is a good one. I have one and it weighs 204# so not sure how they got their weight on that one.

Yeah, my 7-3/4" 202#er only sold for about half that, but the winning bidder was prepared to pay $1K (not including $200 shipping)
