Well after running out of money im back up to working on it .

I got my trusses for the lean to ordered today after much debate i went with a 20 ' lean to. should give me plenty of room.

Got the old fuel tank loaded on a trailer so i can cut a door in the end and clean the inside out and paint.

Looking for ideas on paint this is what i have found and sounds like a good product should cover any smell that might arise in the tank.

http://www.amesresearch.com/default/roofs/metal-roofs/super-primer.html

for the out side of the tank i was just thinking some black tar.

Door will be about a 32 '' x 6' 6 '' door

Got my lean to trusses in this week. 20 ' wide and will run 60 feet down the side of the 50x72 part of the shop that is already there.

The tank will sit in the middle of that part and will be all the way under the concrete floor. then will have concrete steps leading down to the tank.

Got the door just about done for paint and still working on what to paint the inside of the tank with.

Had my preacher from church come and dig me a hole for the tank. We hit in the bottom so i had to go get a air hammer and bust it up and got the bobcat down in the hole and cleaned it out. Had to pull the cat out of the hole.

Thought Oak Grove Alabama sounded familiar. We take 280 from Birmingham to Auburn several times a year. As a local, perhaps you can give us some advice. We come down US78/I-22 from Memphis and exit at the end and cut over to Daniel Pane and end up at the Flying J truck stop. Is there any secret back road that the locals know about that will take you from the Flying J to 280 South of Metro Birmingham while missing the heavy traffic and stop and go on the Interstates and 280 in town? What a mess. And, while I am on my Heart of Dixie rant, are they ever going to get that I-22/I-65 interchange open?

Really like what you are doing with the building and your storm cellar is a prudent precaution. A lot of tornado damage is visible from the highway and I am always amazed by the devastation.

Make sure you bring in electricity, ventilation, and a way to get radio updates and cell phone service. If the building comes down and traps you in the shelter you need a way to call 911.

I like the side footers and steel post bases. I like to see something different for a change. I hope you get some partial end walls and bracing in soon, makes me a little nervous as is due to storm possibilities.

Are you going to have any drainage, pump deal or anything for any water that goes down by the bunker?

Re: My 50x72 + 20x60 shop, ( Rock shop)

Is there any concern with getting trapped in the bunker if the building is destroyed above it and the remains cover the entrance? I would have thought the stairs would be outside so that you could leave the bunker after a storm, but I've never lived in tornado alley, so my experience is nil.

Re: My 50x72 + 20x60 shop, ( Rock shop)

Yes you are right about the possibility of the building blocking the stairs. But even if the door was in the yard the building could still get blown over the door during a F5 storm.

The other reason is when people put out side storm shelters most of the time thay do not get in them they dont think it will hit them and bye that time its to late.

And i did not want to have any water probs. Every thing has there pros and cons

Well its been moving slow last cpl months.

But i Got the house power upgraded to a 400 amp service.
Got the 200 amp power ran to the shop .
Water line from the well house to shop in with a water cut off out side the shop. all 1 '' pex ( should have plenty of water lol )

Put down one more layer of blocks using 4 '' to start the bath room wall , also got the plumbing laid out for the bathroom.

Last pic is a vent for the storm shelter i was going to use the hole in the top of the tank but a 3 '' pvc is to tall.

Nice work on the shop! I really like the square tubing that you used to hold the uprights. Do you know the specification on those tubing? Curious as I really like the idea. How did you secure the tubing while the concrete was setting?

The up right steel is 6x6 1/4 wall. to fit a 6x6 wood post you need dry wood or done what i did and used a planner to shave them down till they fit and also routed the edges due to the steel has a round inside corner.
Thanks yaw !!

If you look back i posted a drawing of how i set them in the ground. its 2 feet in the ground sitting on about a foot of concrete and then i just concreted that in the ground. and 2 feet out of the top of the concrete.

Next step is to lay out my doors and start laying block 24 '' high. no wood will be with in 24 '' of the finished concrete.
