Also I was able to make an offer for 95 and she took it, so it can save you 5 dollars.

I thought I missed out last night, checked again this morning and there were 5 more sets listed. I bought one too, at that price it works out to like $4 and change per socket. Lets hope that Koken lives up to its high quality reputation:thumbup:

Guys,

I noticed that the Ko-ken 3/4" drive sockets being sold on eBay were manufactured using the older 12 point design (not Snap-on's universally adopted "Flank Drive" technology). Will the lack of "Flank Drive" affect turning performance on such large nuts?

Thanks,

Dave

Extremely unlikely that would make a difference on anything you would use 3/4" drive for in my opinion.

I've heard this for years and my combination wrenches are preflankdrive. I have a few small size six point I use when they are corroded. I don't think you will have any problem.
If you need a 3/4 drive set I would buy a set of these. I purchased some Proto metric at a flea market and added some other sizes of metric. I paid $40.00 for these around 1980.
I imagine a new Snap On set would be around $1000.00 about 10 times this price.

I got one of the sets in the first offering...sorry, I thought I had mentioned that. Thx to the OP for pointing out a deal!

How are you guys planning to store these? I don't believe that Ernst or Hansen makes holders that accommodate the 60+mm sockets!

I'm just going to set them on the drawer mat in the bottom drawer of my box with the other 3/4" drive stuff I already have for the most part they are heavy enough that they wont slide around.

Just to be a Koken geek - I was reading one of their catalogues in the store the other day, and it mentioned they had a patent for a suface drive type socket back in the 60`s or 70`s (from memory).

I`ve never had any issues with mine not gripping fasteners securely.

Nikolai V, I'm somewhat of a Ko-ken geek as well. I wish I could walk into a store full of their stuff.

Ko-ken did have a patent application dating back to December 1967. It was a domestic patent for a brand new (in Japan) type of drive called the Flat Drive. Unlike Snap-on's Flank Drive with 144 degree, Ko-ken's was 148 degrees.

Let's us geeks get our facts right.... "Over 40 years ago Ko-ken developed a new 12 point opening by reducing the angle of the conventional oppening (150 deg) to 148 Deg in order to improve the gripping zones of the socket teeth and their effectivness on nuts & bolts"

Everybody including Snap-on used and still use 150 deg Ko-ken developed the 148 deg angle.

In 1986 Ko-ken introduced Flat drive (Snap-on's Flank drive invented by Rolls Royce way back in the 20's) to all sockets, this in combination with 148 deg made Ko-ken 12 point sockets unbeatable.

I would be careful with those sockets on ebay.....they are less than wholesale prices.

This appears to prevent cracking as even six point sockets have the sharp radius rounded also. Its presented as a sales item to give a better grip but also helps prevent cracking.

A lot of times if a truck going to a large distributor gets in a wreck the insurance company pays and they get a new shipment. The insurance carrier sells the rest of the shipment on the wrecked truck for a good price. Sometimes a company goes out of business and the stock is auctioned off and the tools end up on ebay.
I don't know for sure how these were obtained.

Those exact same sets were on there for 40 dollars from the same seller a couple of months ago. I almost bought one then I realized I'd never use it. The seller is only about 15 minutes from me.

@UK Steve: Can you tell us what exactly are the advantages of the Ko-Ken design compared to the others ? There is a tremendous amount of different socket designs from "Flank-drive" to Unit-drive, AS-drive, Torqueplus, Energy-profil, Tractionsprofil, sure-grip, etc. but what are the advantages of the different 6 and 12 point styles compared to each other and what makes ko-ken superior ??
:)

OK here goes......."There is a tremendous amount of different socket designs from "Flank-drive" to Unit-drive, AS-drive, Torqueplus, Energy-profil, Tractionsprofil, sure-grip" .....First of all, all these are basically the same as Snap-on's flank drive system and Ko-ken's FLAT DRIVE introduced in 86 after Snap-on' patent came to an end.

Prior to all this back in 67 Ko-ken introduced (12 point only) the 148 deg angle on the flats of the sockets, this allows the socket to bite into the flats of the fastener, usefull when the fastener is slightly worn. Bear in mind back in the sixties most sockets were 12 point.
After Snap-on's patent ran out early/mid 80's, Ko-ken along with most quality socket/ring spanner producers adopted the "Flank drive" system but unable to call it Flank drive, hence all the different names you mention.
But Ko-ken still use the 148 deg (12 point only) profile to day also incorporating FLAT DRIVE.....Phew..........hope that helps.

Why don't you invite her to post a complete list of all her Koken tools on the list?

My sockets arrived today. They're pretty nice, but I don't like the stickers on them...they're bound to get all dirty and grimy (NO -- I am not saying that my tools can't get dirty, but stickers have a tendency to get really nasty and then they're hard to clean). I have no idea how I'll store these, nor do I have any idea what I'd ever use the larger sizes for, but they're cool to have ;)

I got my set today! It's very nice, I would say they are as nice as my snapons. I think this was a steal for 130 delivered!

My set came today and my initial impression is very positive these are really nice sockets and I really like that they are dual marked SAE and Metric.

My problem is that according to the list on her auction of what is supposed to be included I'm Missing the following.

24MM
32MM
34MM
50MM
55MM

And I have extras of.

19mm
23mm
33mm
35mm
46mm
58mm

I bought one of these sets as well, I don't have it yet. Stickers don't belong on tools, IMO. Can you just peel off the stickers and clean up the adhesive with solvent?

I would wait a day or two as another list member might have your missing sockets. But notify her immediately so she will pay postage.

I thought about that but she has already contacted me back, shes next day airing me the missing sockets and has already refunded me part of the purchase price as an apology and she is picking up the tab on sending back the wrong sockets. I couldn't ask for a better resolution.

Hi Everyone,

I got my Koken sockets today. Thought I would take some pictures for everyone. I think they look very nice. They were all just dumped in a box and rattling around but I’m not complaining as this was a great deal. Wondering what everybody else thinks? The 63mm socket is huge. It’s as big as my hand. At first glace I have all 27 sockets and no duplicates. Guess I will find out how well my Harbor Freight US General box drawers will holds these. They weight like 37 pounds in all. Now I also need to find a ¾ ratchet and breaker bar. Anybody have any suggestions?

I also picked up that 3/8 Koken socket set on Ebay for $35.00. It is not nearly as nice as the ¾ inch. The 3/8inch MM set seems very cheap and the ratchet isn’t very smooth.

Possibly...I haven't looked into this yet. I will probably leave them on until I actually use them, which might be awhile since I don't really have a good use for 3/4" sockets...but again, they are cool to have! :)

btw, if you nest the sockets correctly, they all easily fit into a box the size of a shoebox. I have a nice Sterilite plastic container with cover that they all fit into nicely.

I just rec'd my set of 3/4" sockets, and my "missings" and "extras" are the exact opposite of Diesel-Mech. Like in his case, the vendor is quickly resolving the problem. Otherwise, the sockets look great, and I would buy from her again.
