Nice job - and you just cost me some money. I've got to build something like this. I've got an idea to use our CNC panel machine to drill all the holes for the drawer slides and to machine all the drawer bottoms so that all will be uniform.

I'll try to remember to post some pictures of the project.

I am looking forward to seeing what you build.

As for the CNC, we all use the tools we have available. Or buy more. Or modify what we have. Realizing I had 36 drawer bottoms and 72 sides to cut I made a sled for my table saw. It made all those cuts easier and more accurate, and I have gotten lots of use out of since.

Update on the $0.75 European-style hinges from CS Hardware.

I received these, in a very timely manner I might add, in just two days. I'm not a european hinge expert, but these are definitely worth $0.75. No, they are not what I perceive as Blum brand quality, but at that price, they are better than good. The actual brand (which was not specified on their website) is "Ferrari", and they are 6-way adjustable as advertised. They should work just fine for my project.

Bottom line, I would purchase them again.

OK Larry, thanks for the report. At first I was disappointed to find out that you are "not a european hinge expert", but then I remembered, you are just a hinge guinea pig! :lol_hitti

I hope you will let us know If you have any trouble with installation or durability. I don't need any right now, but I have kitchen, bath and shop cabinets in my future.

BTW, I am loving this small parts cabinet. Today I used pop rivets, machine screws, sheet metal screws, self drilling screws, wire terminals and hose clamps. It was so nice not to have to dig through boxes, bags and drawers to find stuff.

--end gloat--

Thanks again, jp

This project has been a bear. The last thing to do (on the cabinet itself) is to hang the doors, which should be done this weekend. I'll report back on the hinges.

Thanks Larry. Soon after I posted the question about the hinges, I stumbled upon your thread about the cabinet. It looks great, excellent work, as usual. It is certainly worthy of high quality hinges if the el-cheepos don't work out. Those heavy doors may take several per side.

I'm using three hinges per door so I think they will be adequate, but I guess we'll see. In hindsight, using 1/4" glass wasn't my best decision, but at this point, it is what it is. Like you said if these hinges won't cut it, they sell better ones.

skimmed the whole thread, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that there are no pictures of whats inside every tray compartment!!!! Fantastic build, it really makes me second guess going back to lista/schulller plastic tray combo.

If there is one thing I love more then tools and machinery, its hoarding hardware!!! Auction and estate sales are a GREAT way to build up your hardware inventory!

soj,

Not sure what to add that has not already been said, but that cabinet looks great, I am thoroughly in awe of the creativity and execution.

I am a run to the store guy 90% of the time, so every time you reach for something give a quick thought to your fellow diyers sitting in traffic :)

Thanks for the flattery.

You will NEVER have everything you need. I need a repair plug for an extension cord, but I won't be going to get it today. Not fighting the day after Christmas crowds. When I do go, I will get a couple more than just the one I need. I have somewhere to store them! :rocker:

Soj,
Absolutely wonderful project and an even better write up. Thank you for sharing and for being so gracious to answer everyone's questions as well as provide detailed prints ! Can't wait to build my own. I might even make a metal version attached to my service truck !

Go for it Tom! I considered metal but fell back to wood 'cause I only have a 36" brake. If I ever build a small one, I will probably try metal.

Post up what you build, so I can get some ideas from you.

Awesome job, JP!! My compliments on an extremely well thought out and executed project!! I just thought I had a lot of those HF cases. :lol_hitti

I love the cases. I have some of all the different shapes and sizes. Going to pick up a couple more tomorrow.

I considered including some of the deeper cases, but after I figured out the spacing for the slides for the shorter cases I wimped out on trying to include a different size. If I ever build a smaller one, I will probably use some of the deeper cases.

I hope you will post up what you build. Either here or in your own thread, and link to it from here. I look forward to seeing it.

Thanks for the complement Terry. It is the gift to myself that keeps on giving. Every time I go to it and put my hand on what I want, in less time than I used to spend deciding what box or can to look in, I thank myself.

I was about to call you out on having HF cases, cause I didn't remember seeing any in any of your shop pics. Then I put the eagle eye on the update you posted tonight, and there they are! I spied 'em under the tool cart. But you must have some more hidden... somewhere.

Awesome craftsmanship!

I don't know if it has been covered as I di not read all 8 pages, but if/when they stop making those organizers, that could **** if one broke etc...

Alsp, UV light will definitely wear the plastic down, as we all know from our old cracked organizers, but I can't imagine putting a curtain rod and some paisley table cloth over all that hard work. Don't know how to call that one....

Once again, great work!

Thanks Dave, for the compliments, and the thought provoking thoughts.

Yea, the specter of HF discontinuing or changing the cases was discussed, with no good resolution. I have a couple in reserve... JIK.

Never occurred to me about UV damage. I did briefly consider doors, but that was for dust control. I decided no doors 'cause the only thing that could get dusty is the top of the case, and that can be wiped off. And paisley would clash with my other shop decor. :eyecrazy: What type of "old cracked organizer" do you have? Maybe it is a different type of plastic. :dunno:

Thanks for the inspiration! I took parts of your implementation (the easy ones) and made a hardware storage area using the same HF boxes.

Instead of slides, I just used 2X2 aluminum angle. Not nearly as nice, but cheaper, and adequate for my needs and carpentry skill level.

Here's a pic:

It's built into an existing stair I made a decade or so ago.

Anyone still looking for small parts storage should start hanging out in the Amazon Warehouse Deals thread over in the Hot Deals subforum. A few people just got these really cool Quantum QIC storage systems for dirt cheap.

Bins and storage cabinets and things come up there a lot.

It's a great deal they got. I'm waiting for them to drop like that in price again. I have a cabinet similar to what is in this thread that I built a while ago but not nearly as nice.

Great build! I am one of the guys with the pull out bins and I was super happy with them until I saw this. Thanks for making future work for me!

Don'tchya hate it when you see a project that is almost must have but the time and monetary budgets disagree? I just bought a couple smaller organizers from Lowes and am angry I saw this thread now. But mine would/will be a single stack…

Replacing my Folgers two pound coffee cans sorted only by type of fastener has to happen at some point.

I have a few more hiding here and there. :) You guys have WAY more hardware and such than I do and it's WAY more organized. I have more in some drawers in my bench. The ones on the bottom of the cart are the ones that travel to the track. Spare hardware, electrical stuff, zip ties and the like. The rest have to stay home.

I still have a bunch of my stuff in Plano tackle boxes that I need to switch over the HF boxes.

Its funny you say this, as one of the "organizers" (stack on?) I just bought last weekend got the tackle that's too big/sharp/convoluted for my daughters Disney princess tackle box.

Half dozen of one, just over a half baker's dozen of another.

Here's my version. I finished it today. I did mine a little differently in that I wanted to make use of some space between 2 tool cabinets. The only way to do so was to turn the parts boxes sideways. Not a big deal to me to not have the handle facing out.

CA_01171618443192-M.jpg

and
CA_01171618441755-M.jpg

The other reason I built it wide was to hold the card file drawers. I've had them for years after but were stacked precariously in a single row so I did them 2 across now on top of the cabinet. Toe-kick keeps everything off the concrete and I don't have to bend down as far...important as I get older.

I avoided the potential issue of what happens if HF discontinues these parts boxes by using standards (pilasters) in the sides of the cabinet with shelf clips. I can adjust the shelf heights to fit any case.

Cheers

Excellent use of space. The double stack fits perfectly, and if you had used drawers and slides, the extra width would not have fit. Looks great, the workmanship matches the rest of your garage/equipment.

I found a great deal on these parts organizers a while ago. They've stood up to being used everyday in a commercial electrical construction environment.

I found this thread after thinking about a cabinet we had at a previous job with the pull outdrawes with the metal organizers. So I figured it couldn't be too hard to make a cabinet for some of my own...and it kinda ballooned into two cabinets for a total of 60 organizers....

Right now the cabinets are setup in the basement until I can get into the garage to start wiring and finishing it first. I will probably paint them to give the MDF a chance against any moisture.

That looks great. I see MDF for the cabinet body, but what did you use for the horizontal dividers that the organizers are sitting on?

Looks like white wall board.

If you keep the distances short it works fairly well.

It's 1/8" hardboard. It's measured pretty close...if I was to do it again, I'd give another 1/8"-1/4" vertical spacing, but it all fits great for now.

Made these up today. Was a great project for a friend. The sides cabinets are for a lift, pump and hoses. Overall was pretty easy until glue up time. Thanks for the great ideals and thread. d422c1a8cdbe8714fce56d6a5be76ae8.jpg934c68da27531300a3ff5c0fdc938d23.jpg5a173a1b95bf8d42ab37fffda9535d02.jpg

SOJ,

Sorry for the late report back on the hinges, but I just got the doors installed yesterday as seen here.

These hinges are well worth the money. The adjustments they had worked out well allowing me to align the door perfectly. I know there are better hinges, but not for this price!
