What's the most i should pay for one of these, wv1755 (5.5")

I think it is a little high for condition/size. The tradesman are very nice user vises for someone that actually wants to use the vise. Lots of utility with them.

Shift,

I have in kid in college who is close by and almost sent him to go get that one until I noticed that the dynamic support is broken off. What a shame, it was nice vise.

Yep, it keeps getting relisted for a while now.

Bought this little, what I guess to be a homemade vise, for $10. Works great and locks down tight. Bought it just cause I think it is cool.

Joe, while technically a vise, I bet that was a tooling fixture in a fab shop.

If you "Pretty it up" I'd add maybe a valve spring between the jaws about where the cam is so it opens when released.

It is petty cool

You know, that may have been both a fixture, and a ground for a welding fixture... If not; easily done...

Thinking about it,(and looking at that notch at the tip) that may have been a clamp for spot welding to make sure the two sheets were tight together...

I had nothing in the pic for a reference but the jaws are ony 1/2" wide. Look closely in the 2nd pic and you will see a place for a spring. I will pretty it up for sure, no great value just cool and old. The name 'Willy' is scrawled across one side.

Valve spring idea rocks! Agreed it's a fixture maybe for spot/tack welding?

If its only 1/2" wide I don't think even a Briggs Valve spring will fit, but the hardware stores have a fair selection of springs (if you don't havr a parts bin full of them like me...)

A while back there was some discussion about Columbian vise construction and the hollow jaw towers.

Perhaps this patent will shed some light on the hows and whys of their construction.

Google OCR failed miserably on the text translation, so you will need to go the the USPTO to read the patent text. For your amusement go to Google patent and search 1314985. Check out the results. :eyecrazy:

http://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNu...1=1314985.PN.%26OS=pn/1314985%26RS=PN/1314985

The full .pdf is too large to upload, Here is the .pdf image only:

Am working on getting a better text translation.

Wrapped up a couple vises today, this Athol # 79 was missing the all the hardware to make it swivel under your bench. For practice I created a swivel base from scratch and copied the Parker's brake shoe design, had to make the brake shoes, swivel clamp and custom shoulder bolt. The jaws were pretty rough and casted in during so I removed them and made a set of smooth and serrated hard jaws. Replaced the handle and painted it with Rustoleum Hammered Brown. Even on this small 3" vise Athol cut the spindle threads using a buttress thread, one of the strongest threads available. I am happy with the results.

Excellent, true tool and die maker.

Went to go check it out, ended up getting it for $200. It's stamped "Made in USA" :) I can't complain, I've been looking for a while here with no luck and needed a quality vise to replace a 4" china made I've had forever. Date on the slide reads 12/14

Hey folks, long time lurker (3+ years). Found this Columbian 503-M2 on the Charlottesville Craigslist last night for $25. Picked it up this morning.
And finally after some paint I had lying around, I think it came out pretty well.

Many thanks G20. I'm gonna have to find another one to restore because I'm gonna follow Shiftless' advice and keep the Wilton no. 4 I have original.

As someone already stated, it's a Columbian. I found a match here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=605099&postcount=3 but there's no model number. I think it's pre-Wilton take-over and made in the US, but not as nice as the vintage vises made by Columbian 50 years ago.

It's been used for scarfing and is in horrible condition, but might still clean up. I would use it as a welding vise.

Brian

I'll need to bump my son to get more details if possible.. he's been busy at work lately.. new sheriff in town.... lol

Thanks Demo. To the group, Demo put these up for me. I got a call Sunday from a minion who ran into what he believes to be TWO Holland 18s or 19s. I was looking for specs so of course I called Demo. I'll keep you all updated as we progress.I hope the minion info is accurate....:eyecrazy:

On the second page it shows a #48. 8 inch swivel jaw weighing in at 330 lbs. Does anybody know of any other brands that made 8 inch swivel jaw vises? The largest Ive seen is a 7 inch.

Parkinson Model F No. 7 restoration

Well, here's my vice restoration contribution, inspired by the great work here on GJ. The vice in question is a Parkinson Model F No. 7 vice, which my father-in-law gave to my wife and I last year during downsizing. I think the vice dates from about 1950, it's a beefy old thing but in good nick mechanically so just needed a clean up and paint. The quick release mechanism works really well.

Here it is as received:

And another view:

View media item 57877
It had blue and green layers of paint, the base layer was blue:

Here is an advert of this model of vice:

View media item 57900
I stripped it down:

Then a coat of etch primer:

And then a couple of coats of Hammerite smooth finish blue paint (yes that is my kitchen table, it was cold in the workshop!):

The parts were looking good:

And the assembled vice is now ready for another seventy years of service:

Nice No7, it was a particularly good example before you did it up.
I have 3 of them, its my favourite in that size of any of the English ones. Yours is nicer than any of mine though.

fanders ---

My Wife is from Hampshire, and I used to live in Beenham in Berkshire...

We've got family all over your part of the island...

In the eight years I was in the U.K., I never saw one of those vises (vices)...

Or, I would have had it...

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!

Fanders, very nice job fetteling that vise!

I have to ask though, does your wife think you are crazy, and was she in the house when you did that on the kitchen table?

If the answer is No and Yes respectively, she's a keeper!

Good work Fanders! I see that quick release! Can you translate what "for live men" means in different words? It's in that advertisement. I'm not being sarcastic, just trying to understand the phrase..

Anyone have any Hollands vises to show off? I'm pretty impressed with the first one I bought a few days ago...and like to see more. PA made to boot!

Any thing on older Hollands? I have a 123/8?? Combo . Casting is hard to read. 4" jaws Stud mount. I have a piece of RR tie plate that i'm planning on making pipe jaws out of. hardness and thickness should be good.

Fanders... nice vise restore!! Tell us more about the paint you used.. not a familiar brand here in the states...

Try ACE hardware stores.
VERY durable stuff. I used it outdoors on steel railings. 20 years later I repainted just to freshen them up and cover some minor chipping with resulting rust spots. The old finish (black) was a bit faded but never flaked or peeled.

Scored a few nice items this weekend. A Kennedy 1017 in good condition for $20. Not a great deal, but I've wanted a hip roof Kenedy for a long time, so I paid $20. Also got a Mityvac fluid evacuator for $10 and the wife got an antique Singer treadle machine . . . my next restoration project . . .for an unbelievable $10. Wow. Also found an old Craftsman bench plane , model 408, I believe.
