FD: great restoration and quick too. if you have time would you like to post up your pictures and great comments over on the Vise Repair 101 thread? it could use some more restorations and yours will get buried on this huge thread in a few days. i think your pictures of the paper towel method for painting lettering is the first posted other than the link to the video of the guy painting the letters on his stove.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

thanks

OLDIE: I hope BigCaddy is ok. i know JasonEOC has been busy, but still reads the vise thread and he's doing fine. i miss both of their posts and hope they decide to again.

I finally bought my first dedicated pipe vise, only because I had never seen one like it....

It's a Reed No. 51. I have not looked into the age of it, but it seems pretty primate to say the least....

I also picked up this big, I mean 10" wide holding capacity, Columbian woodworking vise just now....

Great idea using the earplugs. Another thought for the OP---slip a plastic bag over the slide and save alot of tape.

Mr P: That's a good looking woodworker's vise you got there. Big too. That pipe vise(?) is unusual to say the least. I think it probably was meant to be non-marring but that's only a guess. I can't wait to read what other members can tell you about it. Good scores!

I am traveling to the Binghampton area of NY next week and so I did a little digging on CL. Unbelievable stuff up there, including a 3 axis machinist vise (like I just restored) for $150!! Isn't there one red blooded american vise hunter in that area??? Seriously see this pic? That's a Reed C model, I don't know which one, for $150 bucks. Seriously that's just ridiculous, but it is too far for me.:willy_nil

Is the "super rare" description in reference to the missing swivel base? :lol_hitti

That is one of my minions, nice guy. I encouraged him to buy it when he called me about it. Good news is the jaw support is solid. I imagine somewhere out there is a base for this, so many have those damned broken jaw supports. Don't be too hard on the guy, I've seen it in person and it is in pretty good shape. Make him an offer if you think he is too high. He isn't like the guy out here with a 6" swivel Jaw Parker that is asking $750 bucks for it!

Good luck finding a replacement...

They are out there, take a chance, what do 5197s go for complete?

In the last twelve months I have found 2 Emmert 6As, 3 Fisher-Norris dbl post vises, 2 Parker 958s, an 8" Columbian, a 6" American Scale swivel jaw, a Yost 4.5" swivel body, 2-Parker 439s, a Craftsman 5196 with a broken jaw support complete with the base, Morgan 8", Craftsman 508 & 506 and a 7" Prentiss swivel jaw, 7" Reed, 6" Reed, 6.5" Monarch, 7" Parker etc... Need I go on? My point is that with patience you can find anything, and the chase is the most fun. Hell, if I wasn't so loaded with vises I'd buy it (that and the fact that I just don't like the 519# series).

Oh and I recently paid $160 for a Wilton C2 with no base and no *** (it's the big 4" dust plate) and I am actively looking for those parts (or at least the base), but when I find it it will be a home run and for cheap $$

Mr. P: Here is a link to another part of the GJ. Someone named BanjoSavesTheDay posted about a Reed No.51 like yours in 2010. It seems like the strap IS designed to hold the pipe without marring it.

EDIT: OOPS! I just scrolled down that page and saw your post. Nevermind! - E. Littella

Joe: if we had vises show up free in our drivway or wilton c2's given to us for a favor we'd all be smiling like you. Just keep smiling while we wish we also lived in the best vise buying area in the US. BTW that reed might be a 2C in syracuse but it is also missing its swivel.

Ex: nice tip with the plastic bag and newspaper works good too.

The missing 5197 base IS a major problem...

Unless one could be found...I wouldn't give over $ 50.00 for it...

I'm thinking that our "Resident Iron Whittler", Reverend Scott, could take on the project of making one...

But...

I'd hate to think what he would have to charge for it, to make it worth his while...

If I was the present owner, I'd put it on the shelf, and wait for a "busted up 5197" to come along...

Restore the top, and find a base...

I'm not 100% sure how much of a deal this is since I'm not too familiar with vise pricing, but seems like a cool old piece someone may be interested in.
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/tls/5452006740.html

Early Chas. Parker #22 vise. Charles Parker is one of the brothers of the Parker Bros. shotgun fame. Close to 100 years old. 3 1/2" jaw width w/anvil. Overall excellent condition with no cracks, repairs or damage of any kind. A stripping & repaint would be in order though. The cast iron base came with the vise, not original but is included. $75 cash firm.

Colin Len,

From the picture, that Parker looks like a steal. If you look at it, I'd suggest that you remove the dynamic jaw to check the condition of the nut, cracks or any other issues. Likely it's fine, but I've seen bad ones...and bought some too.

Good luck.

I would jump on that Parker. Of course it probably has a November 22 patent date that I want and haven't found yet

There's a Swindens underneath all that rust, at least I hope there is.

Here's an ad from 1887 for the Parker 22. The swivel should look like in the picture under the cast iron stand it's on . ! Nice find and a STEAL at 75.00...  Well over 100 years old!

Top, I'm pretty sure the 22 transitioned to the steel swivel base. That is essentially the Big Bear service vise.

Yeah, I'm sure you are correct. I just didn't know how old this one was when he said "nearly a hundred years old". If his is as old as the one in the ad I posted then it should have the under bench swivel . :dunno:

Look in the gap of the plate it's mounted on. I think I see a center post and no holes for a swivel lock , at least on the side I can see. But with Parkers swivel brake design the are holes on both sides.

Ridge 500-R Utility Vise. 5" jaws, opens up about 4 1/2". 24 pounds. Cast in pipe jaws. It's a pretty small, compact vise for having such wide jaws.
Don't know why I bought it. I certainly don't need another vise. I guess I felt sad for it, sitting on the ground at a swap meet.
There's a small crack under one of the jaws, but it does not seem to me like it is in a crucial area (last picture).

Tops and Outlaw, I just about wrapped up my Parker 22, but I made my own base. I will share pictures early next week. I really like this vise. The one I have had all the hardware missing a perfect candidate for a custom Parker base.

Kevin I think you've mastered making all Parker parts. When are you gonna start making Parker wrenches?

KMScott: while you are skilled at all parts of vises would there maybe be an entire vise made from scratch on your BUCKET LIST? nicely done and great pictures as per usual.

Shift: i do like those old Bullets. nice find and hope you have better luck with this one than you did with the last one.

Colin: the stand that red Parker was on was almost worth the asking price. did you buy it or did somebody else buy it?

Mr. P: I found this catalog page with your Reed No. 51 strap vise on it. It was indeed meant to be non-marring.
