Tarnished: since my pegs were MIA and the washers and roller bearings on mine were all mixed up when i picked it up any chance you can show a picture of what yours looks like? or i guess i can try to google roto bins and maybe the instruction manual is online. thanks for posting yours and i'm jealous, but at least i have one now.

Drives:Not quite sure what "peg's your asking about? My roller bearings are under each shelf, and don't think I can get pics of that area but I will try, if that is something you are needing. Please explain what your looking for exactly, and I will see what I can do. :dunno:

Tarnished: i probably should have said PINS instead of PEGS. i have one that is about 4 inches long rusty and bent to keep each shelf off the one below it. if you don't use PINS and just washers and the roller bearings just say so if it's too hard to also get a few pictures. no huge hurry, but i'll probably start cleaning it and putting it together in a couple weeks because it will be nice to get some of the stuff i have in buckets and shelves in to it.

one of my bins is tweaked to i'll have to flatten it while i'm straightening out the fins for the dividers. i'm hoping it will be worth all the time spiffing it up.

thanks

Thanks Dennis. My dad, and now me, services the laundry and dry cleaning industry. They use industrial sewing machines and that is, I think, a drawer from one of the tables. Now it holds my oversize drill bits; anything above 1/2". I wish I had a better "story" because that one's a bit mundane.

No worries.. its not mundane at all.. How old do you figure it is? Reason I ask.. I was born and raised in South Bend, IN and at one time Singer had all their "cabinet works" there including the cabinets that were treddle all the way up thru about 1955 ish .. So, there's a good chance that was made where I was.. ::beer:

Super cool regardless and to me a neat story on a relatively mundane box..

here's a few of mine,
they need paint, but the red on, is a craftsman, I think the other brown one might be a craftsman.
The little one is a no name dumpster find,
got the craftsman 150 DP on it.
the Selstorm safety glass one is a cabinet that sterilized safety glasses,
$5.00 at a school auction.
The white file cabinet is just a file cabinet, free, got the HF drill press on it.
:p
Edit, The last one is just 2 of those little steel file box things, under either side of my pattern makers box.
under my wood lathe (oliver) for sand paper and such.
tools and accessories for wood lathe are in the pattern makers box.

Here are a couple of pictures of my bolt bin that my Hygrade cabinet posted upthread sits on and a better picture of my '64 Card's calendar. I imagine that you can guess what's revealed when the plastic sheet is lifted!

Bub: thanks for posting your cabinets. if you want to find out if your dark brown cabinet is a Craftsman post up some pictures on the vintage tool box thread and close ups of the slides and handles and as many front and side pics as you can.

Jeep: now i know why you REALLY like the calender. SHE'S A KEEPER.

ALL: anybody else have some metal cabinets to post pictures of and especially how they are filled up with your nuts, bolts, parts or cool tools?

Outlaw: i'm trying to get rid of my VICES or weren't you paying attention. she's a looker and probably still is even at 80.

i'm sticking to nuts, bolts, parts and tool holders to keep the thread from being shut down.

BTW any chance you can show us your drawers with the Clamps in them?

thanks for the FULL SCREEN version

Oh, OK, I'll do that. Front handles do look like the handles on the red primer one, and the front is rounded like it.
I think the top, (where another box sits, ) is about 25", as a newer top box would not fit down in the top.
I had too put a board across the top, IIRC,
and the guy I got the primer'ed craftsman did the same thing.

Bub: I would have paid $100 for that nice wood machinist box too. I also started a thread of WOOD CABINETS you might want to take a look at and post your wood machinist box over there too.

Oh, OK Thanks, I;ll post it, them there.
I still have to put the corner trim back on,
I had to re finish the top, as water damaged it when the commode supply line was dripping up stairs.

I have several, some I have redone, refinished,
and had to make a front panel, or make a drawer,
and kept them, and some I sold, some still need done, and 2 were like new, so I just put them to use.

Man I really wish I had the room for those but they were just huge at 47"w X 35"d x 17.5"h each. Here are the ones that I'm keeping...a measly 40"w x 30"d X 16"h each with a 6" stand.

Merc, That's a good size for tool storage. Two is OK, three are perfect, 4 is start another stack.

I have ONE...

Outlaw, I hear that. I originally had delusions of fitting all of these but it wasn't meant to be as I have somewhat limited space. Fortunately the more stuff I drag into Nine's garage, the more stuff he has to either move into his storage or sell (possibly to me, stay tuned on that). I managed to just squeeze these two in behind my car in the garage, by about 1/8". You're absolutely correct that two is okay, three would be ideal, and four would be me calling Nine again cursing about how I want to keep it but I just can't due to space constraints. I'll probably never find a third of this size in my price range so for now I'm using it for a work space for a small band saw table.

Nine top them with a good piece of Ply for the upholsterer's raised work surface. if it needs to be a bit higher, maybe a 4X4 frame under them?

Merc: nice find on the blueprint cabinets and for sharing the ones you didn't have room for with NINES. if you have time and want to can you show what you store in them? if you look back in this thread you'll see that i picked up 90 drawers of those and bigger ones. i sold 40, but still need to ORGANIZE and figure out what to put in the ones i'm keeping.

Nines: i have several of exactly your style and they came with about a 5 inch metal base to get them off the floor. i'm delivering a pair of them (10 drawers) with a base to a client in about an hour so i'll try to remember to take a few pictures of the base if you might like to see what it looks like. do you have a brand name on yours? mine like that were Safco brand. you'll love how big the drawers are if you have the space.

Not the best pic, but 2 three drawer cheapies I cobbled together to hold taps and dies. The locking tabs in the back were hooked together so all drawers lock when the lid is closed. Lucked out as the width of the top box was just the right size to fit into the cut down till of the bottom box.

Did you make compartments in the drawers for the different size taps & dies?

Somewhat - top till holds the tap handles, the drawer with the brown cardboard (2nd pic) - cardboard has locations of various taps, lifts out for taps, (3rd drawer). Bottom drawer is pipe taps. Other drawers hold cased tap/die sets. Anything above 1/4-20 is in a seperate case.

Bro (do you mind if I call you "bro"?), the question isn't what you can store in these...the question is what can't you? :) (aside from taller items, of course). I think it all boils down to what you have to store and when you need it. Me, I'm storing these outside of my shop (loosely using that term) in my garage. So, I'm going to store things that I normally wouldn't reach for inside of my shop, or may reach for in my garage when working on my car. Nine will be storing these in his shop and using them for upholstery related items that he reaches for when using the table he's going to build.

I've had mine in place for less than 24 hours and have mostly filled up one. In addition to things I don't normally reach for, I put some of my axe collection in there to keep it away from my two year old. I will likely put my knife collection in it as well. Now as my tool collection grows I will certainly organize things better but for now it fills a need.

Alchy: nice organization that is for certain. any chance you can get a few pictures of the sides and back so I (we) can see how you cobbled them together. I've passed on a lot of rollers that were rusted out on their bottoms that had 3 or 4 great drawers on top and if I could save them from the scrap pile I would.

thanks for sharing.

Merc: first off you can call me BRO, DRIVES, DIF or my regular handle that all work. thanks again for posting more pictures of those great cabinets. i'm filling up a lot of my blueprint and cabinet drawers with tools and parts and they seem to hold a fair amount of weight too.

I've got several upright file cabinets with the smaller drawers like I think I saw at least one in your line of cabinets like mine that are handy for supplies and bigger tools.

do you have an attached garage and a detached one or just a big shop that has one end for working on and the other for cars and stuff?

cheers

Nines: I've stacked a couple blueprint cabinets on it's little 6 inch riser piece off the floor and i'm putting a couple more on a commercial rack that is 40 inches deep. if you have any commercial racks set up they fit nicely on the rack or they are sturdy enough to make a desk if you need that more. what brand are yours?

Thanks. Not much to show - look at the rh side of the last picture and you can see where the front of the top till was cut out, leaving a 1/2" lip. Just so happened that the top box fit inside the cutout till perfectly, both side to side and front to back. A slot was cut into the bottom of the top box to allow the bar for the drawer locks for the bottom chest to be connected to the bar for the top chest. A few pop rivets connected the two.

thanks

Drives,

I have a semi attached (covered walkway) two car garage and a small shop / shed / garage/ whatever you want to call it behind that. The two car garage houses my hobby car and my wife's vehicle, whenever the contents of my shop don't spill over into it like they have recently  I've been toying with starting my own thread about it but have always been on the fence about such things.

After seeing Nine's shop I realized that shop storage was certainly not limited to traditional tool boxes, and thus I went down that slippery slope. I can't say enough about good old American made steel cabinetry. I didn't find a link to any such thread about your shop but I did see a post of yours regarding the 250lb cabinets you have and now secretly hate you. Well, openly I guess? :p

Outlaw, I have a laminated lab table top planned for the top surface, it's 4'x6' so these two map cabinets back to back will be 47"w x 70", I can then build a caster stand underneath to set the table at the right height and provide more storage.

Drives, the shelving is my backup plan. If I can't get the design to work for my upholstery table, these will go on the 3' deep pallet rack perfectly.

Merc, start a thread and stop showing off..."blah blah, I've had mine in place for less than 24 hours and have mostly filled up one, blah blah."

My girl just shook her head when I told her how the deal went down, she finally said we should consider custody rights over what machines/cabinets who gets for which holidays... :lol_hitti

Merc: I don't have a garage gallery thread yet either because for maybe the first year that I was a member here I didn't even look at that section. just too many COOL and expensive garages and STUFF in that area so I called it the dark side and stuck in the TOOLS sections.

I don't want to make you jealous, but I am going to start an ORGANIZING 101 thread you might want to check in every now and again when I get it started. I do have maybe more cabinets and tools than most and I only lack the 40 x 120 shop to put them in so I could keep more of them. earlier in this thread I think I posted that I was picking up 18 5 drawer blueprint cabinets from a client that only had paper in them. I've since sold 6 or 8 because I can't find the space without renting another storage unit.

here's a glimpse of my little 9 x 15 garage at home that is all I have currently that is mine. I do have several storage units and lease a shop that looks like i'm more of a scrap dealer now because I had 2 clients retire from their 100 year old steel fab business and i'm hoping to learn to weld soon to have fun with some of this old steel.

cheers

Nines: before I started changing almost all my wood benches over to steel ones I had a 4 x 8 on wheels that was an awesome layout table and even full moved around pretty easily.

just get some better than average casters with stops so you can push it out of the way when you need to get it out of the middle of the room or move it out to the driveway.

your plans sound good for the blueprint cabs either inset in a table or rack.

unlike you my wife wants to put a FREE sign on all my STUFF and thinks ORGANIZING is a swear word so I need to be careful when using it.

Did this about 8-9 years ago. I removed the hinge pin and top from the bottom box. Then I used a hack saw with a fine blade to cut down the front corners to about 1/2" above the bottom of the till. Another cut about 1" away from one corner cut down the same depth parallel to the 1st cut, and scored between the cuts. Then worked the inch wide piece until it broke off. This allowed me to cut the remainder of the front of the till with sheet metal shears. Cleaned up with a file. As to the top box, I drilled several small holes and then filed to make a slot for the locking bar.

On page 16 post 304 Drivesitfar asks if anyone has a round spinning bin to store parts in and I have one to share
I restored it about a year ago for my wives craft room.

I also didn't see any old Alemite metal cabinets so I thought that I would share some of mine.
