Hey guys I live in Central PA and live in the country. I just got a quote off the amish to build my pole barn garage and I was wondering what you think about the price? Seems like a great deal to me.

40x60x14 with 3- 10x10 insulated doors and 1 man entry door.
Also included is a 6" concrete slab since I want to add a lift or 2.
All 26gauge steel roofing and sides with 3' wainscoting on the bottom of the sides.

Fully assembled poured etc. except excavating and electrical.

Total quoted was $25,500

I plan on closed cell spray foaming the inside and adding led lighting throughout. Which of course will be extra and not included in the build price.

What do you guys think about this quote?

Thanks!

I built a 28'x36'x10'addition onto my existing garage, (2) 9'x10' doors, and (1) entrance door, (2) windows, and finishing the outside. It was right at $36,000. So at $25,500, you are getting a hell of a deal.

What about trim or gutters at the roof/wall joints? A building that size will have a lot of water coming off even with a heavy dew, and you'll get snow inside without trim at the top.

Sounds like a good quote, but sit down with them to make sure there aren't things missing you are expecting or things you should add.

That was not too far off our base quote from a local central NY Amish group. However, add in gutters, extra windows, special doors, bookcase girts, cupola, special color (wife), larger eave and gable overhangs, special scissor trusses, OSB and Tyvek under the steel, and the price rose rapidly. The point is, know exactly what you want.

It sounds like at least a fair price for a very basic building that you described.

I had a 36' x 48' x10' built by one of the Amish builders in SW Indiana about 8 years ago. My impression was that the barn builders competed mostly on price, and the "base" price was a minimal building. (10' post and truss spacing, 2,000 psi concrete, no vapor barrier, little or no stone base, no steel reinforcing etc.) The builder seemed reluctant to suggest more costly options---probably fearing that he would price himself out of a sale.

I ended up spending about 50% to 60% more than the initial quote and feel that I still got a fair price.

As others have suggested, you need to discuss all the details of construction to make sure that you are getting exactly what you want.

I'm having a 30 X 36 X 12 enclosed pole barn with two 10 X 10 doors and one 16 X 10 door built. Has vented Eve's and a man door. $25k. This included 6 truckloads of dirt to build up foundation. Concrete is 4" 300 psi with two 4x4 pads 6" thick.

I think it sounds like a good price. I had my 30x40pole building built in 2010 for $22500 w/concrete, and I'm still finishing the inside, which has got expensive.

It sounds like a great price. My 40 x 50 x 14 with excavation, concrete, electrical, 3 bay doors, man door, OSB outside and inside, insulation, 15' lean to, and outside concrete aprons was $60,000.

The Amish built my 30x50 x12 in 1992 with poured floor and insulated roof for $12,700. My prices have jumped. I had the Amish put a roof on last year on my home. Interesting how they have a "yankee" driver tote them around. They work hard when they show up.

Yes, as everyone has stated above, it is a good price. My Amish built 30x50x12, 2 O.H door openings, 1 man door, 2 36" windows and concrete floor, throw in my gutters and wiring and I have close to your $25K price, in mine. A friend of mine was tearing down several buildings in town, he said I could have the two smallest doors, so that saved me some $$ slapped, a coat of paint on them and they look good, I put them up myself. They will put this thing up in no time, they dug my 24" holes on Monday (waited for inspection), came back Wednesday and framed the whole building, Thursday, it rained and only 3 guys came back, but they got the roof and front metal on, Friday, the whole crew came back and they were down around 1:00pm. They did a good job on mine.
My posts are 6x6 -8' on centers and trusses are 4'

A screaming deal to be sure. But then, PA prices may be less than Michigan's. I have a garage, 24x48, a kit, put in complete with concrete by a contractor, and I wired and lighted it myself. I have about 22K in it now.

That doesn't sound bad for a good size building and with a full concrete floor. BTW, hi from a fellow Altoona guy

Sounds like a great price!

I had the electric Amish around my area build my 50x96x16 with 42' porch 16x12, and 10x10 insulated doors, 2 windows and a walk door with 5" poured floor. And a few small extras and it was nearly $65k. All in all it seemed inline with all other quotes I received.

They showed up every day by 7, in 90+ degree heat, worked till 1-1:30. Never slowed and we're done in 5 days...

Wow! Those prices you guys are paying make me want to relocate just for the savings. Pole barns would never be permitted where I'm at but a similar cheap steel building would be 3x that on a slab. Good luck and as required, post lots of pics :)

I just built a similar sized building in MS. Here's the specs 36'x50'x14' enclosed building with a 16'x50' lean-to, for a total roof area of 52'x50'. 2 man doors, 4 windows, 3 10'x10' overhead doors. 26 ga roof & walls w/insulation. 42" wainscot on 3 sides.

Roof only structure = 11,400
Wall framing, sheeting, windows, & man doors = 7,250
Slab 6" = +/-4,000
O/H doors = 3,000

Total cost = 25,650 excluding dirt work, utilities, etc.

$25K for the bare shell of a shop building that size? DAMN! Do they want to travel to Seattle?

I wish I had the property for any sort of shop building. I'd gladly take out a loan for that sort of setup.

They have to pay that "English" driver a lot. The Amish guys my friend hires has to pay their guy $150 a day to pick them up and drop them off, so my friend just goes and fetches the 4 man Amish crew to get a break on their price. They have a trailer filled with tools, thus you have to pick them up with a truck/van. If you have the time, maybe offer to pick them up everyday for a discount?

The Amish do good work -- honest, quality work. My friend bought a gutted foreclosure and they made it nice again. The detached 2 car garage had a collapsing old roof. They tore it off, extended the height, installed new trusses, a new roof, and then re-sided it. Looked like a brand new place when they were done.

That's a great deal, now basically double that price if you plan to finish it with electric, insulation, interior finish, accessories. Can I ask who the builder is

Price seems good. I received quotes from 5 companies in your (our) area and they were similar. After providing plans to them, and working out details, I am at $25k for a 30x48x14 with 6x46 lean-to without concrete. Pad prep was completed last year by myself. Roof pitch is 10:12, 20psf bottom chord trusses for light storage. I supplied windows and doors so as to match our home. I ultimately chose Wagler out of Bird-In-Hand. Ira took time to work with me during the planning stages, offered some good suggestions and they have been great to deal with. Smaller family run company, and the service shows. So far extremely pleased with them and would recommend.
