Found this on my local CL for $40 OBO...
I know nothing about vises and can't really tell anything from the picture. Any advice?

honza I do not know what the H stands for. I am sure someone here can chime in and let us know. I probably was already told and forgot. I believe I sold it for $190. I posted a photo of it post # 27978 page 1399. It was posted after it was already sold.

Well, here is the end result of the Parker 273 restore. Like that Prentiss I did last month, the color scheme is a little out of the ordinary. Went with the Iron Man red/gold since this vise has both the swivel base and swivel jaw making it more capable than regular vises.

Whatnoise: it looks like a Wilton and if under that paint and grime it says MADE IN USA $40 is a good deal if it doesn't have any broken parts or welds. it should clean up nicely even if you only have a bench grinder with a wire wheel.

Honza: $50 is OK for that vise in that condition, but it's not a rare vise and it seems like you might not NEED a vise.

FD: nice restore on the Parker. any thoughts to share on why you painted it red and gold? school or sports team colors or do tell??

Honza, I would agree, If you NEED a Vise, the Desmond Stephens is a decent vise. It's NOT a machinest vise however, its a Mechanics vise. The main difference being the U slide is not cast as a solid part of the D jaw, its a formed part cast in place.

I sold a 400 all gussied up for $120 a year or so ago. That one is a 500 (5" jaws)

Whatnoise, that's a tough one with only that pic. IF it has a round slide it MIGHT be a Yost. Some of them are sort of short and stubby like that

It also seems small, and certainly shows signs of some abuse. IF it's a Yost or other decent brand it could be a good deal. Or maybe not, Go look at it and get more info... if not structurally damaged and not obviously ChiCom it could be a sleeper.

Fordriver: Very good job on that Parker! Not many of us would have chosen that color scheme but I have to admire the results.

LesserSon: That Cheney anvil/vise was a rare find. I posted one at the beginning of the month - page 2092 posts number 41834, 41838 & 41839 if you're interested. The drawing shows the building where the anvil/vises were made. I found out that the place where that building sat is now approximately in the lobby of GM's world headquarters. The pin on mine is very long and slightly tapered. It came out with a slight tap.

Thank you!!! I couldn't decide on a color combination until I walked into Home Depot and started staring at the paint options. For whatever reason, when I saw the bright red on the shelf, it reminded me of Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man movie saying something about "Hot Rod Red". So it hit me to paint the vise red and gold.

CRS Thanks bud, I appreciate it!!! The color scheme is a little different, but I like things a little different a lot of the time.

All,
Here's an Erie No. 0S pipe vise that I finished. It's a small one (forgot the cola can for size). As far as I know, it was manufactured in the early half of the 20th century.
Something odd, one of the square head bolts required a 12mm wrench. I guess that there is a size between 7/16" & 1/2" out there.

Normally, I just restore the mechanics and machinists vises and flip the rest, but this was easy fun.

Mark: either the bolt was worn or some of the old wrenches and sockets do have 32nd sizing so 15/32 might have been the size needed.

or the bolt was made in England??

Nicely done.

Lessorson: nice pictures of your vise family

Honza, that is another Mechanic's vise with the Formed slide. Unless it has Made in USA cast in, probably Asia. Babco is headquartered in Oakland CA, but went import a long time ago

Picked this Chas Parker up this morning at a yard sale it is in great shape. I think it still has some of the orignal paint on the lettering. One piece is broke but doesn't seem to affect operations. Here is a few pics. If anyone could provide some info on that pice and steer me to someone who may have a replacement for it, that would be great.

Thanks.

FB,
Nice find! I'm jealous!
If I had your problem, I'd braze it. I don't believe that that's a high stress area.

Good idea on brazing. I picked it up for $45 and it may end up replacing my Wilton tradesman. I think I will just clean it up and put it to work, the jaws are in great shape.

I would clean the rust off the shoes and in the base real well. The broken ring will still not allow any movement of the shoe and all the force is in an outward direction.

You can braze it but I think it will probably work fine just as is. The 974 is a great vise. I restored 2 which I sold but was using one for a while. It's the perfect size vise.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I started cleaning it and found this part that needs to be replaced also. Is this something that is out there, or are they like unicorn tears .

What
That sure looks like a chrome screw end and handle.

Beware of Asian chrome
Beware of Asian chrome
Beware of Asian chrome

Or am I delusional?

JKB

Your not delusional, but fixed it for you:

Europe does use chrome on some vise parts and generally it's not an issue.
