So we took 3 trips with the 22' truck, put about 130 miles on it in one day. We got the first load emptied and placed in the correct rooms in the house in 45 mins with 3 buddies helping me. I unloaded the last load myself yesterday, but it was mostly the misc **** left over that we just threw into boxes. Got all the beds put back together, my kids rooms are basically done. Kitchen is a mess, our room is a mess. Still haven't found the box with my shoes for work.

Only casualty of the move was my ridgid bandsaw. We slung 2x4 under the base to carry it with 4 guys. But the rear 2 guys (me being one of them) lifted before the front two guys, and the cast table was front heavy, so it tipped and we dropped it. Fortunately all it broke was the trunnion support bracket which is about $25, so we are good there.
9c6d11635df2e51a1ce95acaab232cfa.jpg my kids loved the big yellow truck. All my done talked about for 2 days.

Was the home up to snuff for all those who were coming into town for the game last night? One heck of a lot of rain this last week.

Did you make it out for a full day of tailgating the game? I swear I saw your jeep up in lot 2 somewhere in the middle. Was that you? Almost stopped in to say hello to a fellow garage-journal member, I was over on the fike side of the lot. The tailgating was super sloppy! Got to detail my truck again to get rid of all the mud lol. Such a fun day, the game was great!

Yep that was us. We got out there around 945-10am. I winched a minivan and a gmc Yukon out of the mud without moving my jeep.

Most people think you just need more skinny pedal. We got home in about 10 mins, beat the crowd out of lot 2.

House did fine. We got enough unpacked this week we were able to have everyone in bedrooms. We had a good time despite the rain, a bit stressful with only being in the house for a week.

So some of you may have seen the flooding in Columbia and Charleston, over 500 roads washed out this week in SC. We didn't have it so bad but last Thursday a town just upstream from us got 8-10" in 24hours according to NOAA. It flooded our baseball field, playground, and street behind our house. We were fine but we need a catch basin by the front sidewalk for sure

Glad to see your home was out of harms way. On another positive note, you had a temporary water park in your back yard.

That's the neighbors, you can barely see a bit of our house behind the trees to the left. We are even a little higher than they are.

I did make a little progress on insulating my basement shop. Finally getting to a point unpacking where we need to organize storing **** in the basement which starts with the shop. Also the list of stuff the wife wants me to build is as long as my...well it's long, so I need to get my tools set up soon.

Long time no update. We are still slowly unpacking things. My wife is pregnant with our third, so she's pretty much out of commission so things are moving very slowly. At this point we have enough done that I have been working on the shop, so that I can get my cabinets and tools out of the storage area, so that I can organize all the **** in our basement into the storage area, so that I can get the rest of the **** out of our garage.

It's insulated and I have 95% of the OSB hung. My ceilings were 8'-8" in the basement, so I have to add a little strip all the way around up top. Once done I will caulk seams and prime with kilz, then paint, probably a light gray color, then I can start installing cabinets

Just read through your whole build thread. Very enjoyable. That is some house you had built. Can't wait to see what you do with your workshop and garage.

I finished the OSB tonight except for a 5'x2' piece over the exterior doors. I was hoping to spend tomorrow morning caulking the seams but the wife has other plans for me.

Very slowly making some progress. I got it primed with some kilz. I underestimated how much I'd need, I got 3 gallons thinking the 2nd coat would go on thinner than the first, but it didn't, I needed a full 4 gallons. But I decided I didn't want to run back out for another can on a work night. So you can tell the one wall I ran short on. I guess it will get an extra coat of color. (Edit: actually in these pics you can't really tell which wall has 1 coat. It's the wall with the exterior door)

Speaking of color, we have a ton of left over paint from the house. When they come to do final punch list and touch up in a few months they will bring new paint. So since I have this and I don't want to store it, I'm gonna use it to paint the shop.

Most of this **** needs to go in this space. Some of the cabinets will end up back on the garage. And I think I might make the back side of the bar wall into a lumbar storage rack.

I'm also slowly replacing the incandescent fixtures and 40w bulbs with 4tube 4' t8 fluorescent wraps.

Got two of these shelving units for free. The husband of a nurse I work with had a warehouse they were cleaning out, so I scored them for free. I have no idea the specs but they are 2' deep, 4' wide, 6' tall, and very sturdy. I'm gonna wait to do the other until after I get my shop set up and the storage area cleaned out. I decided I want to epoxy the floor in there to keep down dust and lighten it up.

Quick question, is there any downside to priming the concrete foundation walls? I figured if I painted them white it would help lighten it up back there.

I don't personally know of a reason not to priming/painting the walls down there there are some product that can be used that will seal it better than normal paint. Great score on the free shelves by the way, that is the best price for anything.

Well you know if you don't need it you could always ship it out here, I know I could use it and find a great spot for it to stay.

So now that paint is done, I'm trying to figure out what combo of base cabinets I need/want. My wife wants a few in the garage because at the last house we used them to store bulky non-perishables, as well as canned goods. So I basically played mental Tetris all evening trying to figure out what will fit in the shop and garage.

That is when I figured out my free shelf units are actually 30" deep, 70" wide, and 7' tall, a good bit larger than I realized. This meant the took up too much space in the garage. Garage is 22' wide x 22'-8" deep, but we just bought a used suburban this weekend because baby 3 is on the way. So I'm gonna stick two 33" base cabinets in the garage and the rest in the shop.

Settled on this set up. I actually have one 17" cabinet left, not sure what I'll do with it. It made this section too wide so it would interfere with ingress/egress from the storage area. (Edit: the cabinets are about 4" from the right wall and about 18" from the concrete wall, so there more room into the doorway than it appears)
7c1f84ef80a8fcec1673910c56d23709.jpg

On the back wall I'm building an 8' mitre saw table. I'll probably float my band saw and drill press on the corners of the wall with the exterior door. On the remaining wall I think I will do two 4' benches on casters so I can roll them around to double as assembly tables.

Thoughts or suggestions? I still have to figure out somewhere for the table saw, possibly the jointer if I get it, and my file cabinet storage system. May stick those in the storage area. Also need to plan on a dust collecter. After simply cutting the OSB for the walls, it is WAY to dusty to operate without one.

A little more, got my mitre saw table done. I plan to hang wall cabinets later this week over thanksgiving, and hopefully completely wrap up the few cabinets that will be in the garage. Might start to hang a few things on the wall but I'm undecided at this point because I think I'd like to go with some sort of slat wall, or at least a few strips.

Unfortunately my saw base is a little shallow so I don't have much space in the little cubbies. Thought about using riser blocks but whatever. It's a good working height for me since I'm short.

Trying to decide on what type of flooring I want for Christmas from the wife/Santa. Maybe I'll wake up Christmas morning and she will have installed it!

One can hope...but we are expecting baby number 3, so I have a feeling I'll be doing all the installing! I guess we have too many empty bedrooms.

I measured my space last night, I have 540 sq ft, with a 10% safety factor in right a 600sq ft. I'm leaning towards armor clad because they sell a 600sqft kit with the top coat for $489. Primer is another $159, haven't looked into concrete patch/expansion/contraction joints yet. Also etching material.

Rust bullet was intriguing but they were at $589 for a 750sqft amount without anything else added in yet, IIRC, tools, primer, top coat, etc

Legacy has a 600 sq ft kit that includes primer for $464, but the top coat is another $249. They are all around the $650-$750 range I guess.

Looks good man, how's the yard holding up? We spent the night in Highlands around peak leaves, loved Wolfgang's restaurant, and are strongly considering looking for a cabin up that way soon.

Yard is doing ok. A few spots are rough. This time of year, there are spots in the back yard that see 0 hours of direct sunlight. With all the rain we had wince we moved in those areas are just turning to mush. I may be mulching those places soon. Grass is still looking pretty good. Have a few areas that need a few plugs. Haven't run the sprinkler since I moved in!

Finally starting to get a little time on the garage. Sears had a few of the gladiator gear track stuff on sale, 50% on the tracks, much less on the brackets. Got all the cabinets hung. Now we it's have to decide what to put in them.

94b384a0f67aba1ea96b6666f6376836.jpg

The ones closest to the entry door will be non-perishable foods, paper towels, TP, etc. All the stuff to the right of the fridge will be the garage/auto/some lawn stuff. My jeep doesn't get driven much on the street, so I usually wedge it way over to that side to make room for the suburban to get the kids in and out with the doors all the way open.

Progress is progress, what do you have planned for the area to the left of the fridge under the top cabinets? Those double jogging strollers are nice when you are using them but are a huge space hog any other time. If you can figure out a better storage solution for it please share it with the rest of us (me).

It looks as though you hung a generic wall cabinet up on your geartrack...how did you make that happen? Do they sell a bracket, or did you make something?

EDIT....never mind, on closer inspection, it looks as though the cabinet is mounted to the wall right next to it.

Correct. Those were my cabinets from my old garage. I hung them with French cleats at the old place, and reused them here. They can slide on and off if need be if/when I decide to paint the garage. I just butted the gear track up next to it.

So far this is the best solution I have for that huge stroller. Fortunately when we built this house I had them bump the garage 2' wider since we made it a front entry, which was crucial. I'll have to take a pic tonight with both cars in there. We have plenty of space around the big car to get kids out. The jeep isn't driven much so it stays out of the way.

The empty space under those wall cabinets will remain empty for now. That's the side we park the suburban on, which is 18'-6" long, and my garage is 22'-6" deep with the door closed if memory serves. So with that open space we are able to carry a box or a kid around the front of the suburban without hitting the wall cabinets or the hood. If anything goes there it will probably be another set of gear track with more hooks for hanging various things on, and possibly the gladiator golf caddy, maybe a shelf, or sports ball caddy. We'll see

Ok, we have been talking about widening our driveway and adding a sidewalk around to the back. Our turnout we asked for seemed fine on paper, but in practice its not enough for us. My plan is to extend the turnout forward to the street, then back towards the man-door on the garage. at that point the sidewalk will start and head around the house. I'll have to take pictures in the daylight tomorrow.

I have an email into the planning and codes dept of my city. I assume I will need a permit, but I do not know if there is a restriction on the width of my driveway at the street. I'm hopeful they'll let me wide the 10' or so at the street.

I have a few questions about the new vs old concrete. The existing concrete is only about 3.5 months old. we are planning this project for late spring or so. My concern is where the new concrete meets the old concrete. Do I need to "connect" them some how, perhaps with rebar epoxied into the existing slab? Or do I need to isolate them using the isolation joints like they did between by basement slab and the foundation?

On the sidewalk, should I use wire mesh reinforcement? I'm planning to put a 4" crushed stone base down for the sidewalk...is this absolutely necessary? We have red clay here, i'm not sure how that changes things, I guess it compacts well but doesnt drain well.

I will not be finishing the concrete. I was just hoping to put in some sweat equity by forming up the sidewalks and driveway myself. The driveway rebar I'd probably leave to an expert. We have a little experience doing the forms, as we did them at my dad's place when I was in high school.

here is the response I got from the codes/planning folks

"There isn’t really a width restriction for driveways for a single-family residence. The limiting factors will be setbacks and lot coverage. You cannot have parking within the first 25’ of your property and it sounds like the purpose for widening the drive is to accommodate parking. Keep in mind that this setback is measured from the edge of the right of way – not the edge of the paving. Also, paving cannot be any closer than 3’ from the side property lines. And, for parcels less than an acre, the maximum lot coverage area (any impervious surface – such as a roof, swimming pool, driveway, concrete walk, etc.) cannot exceed 40% of the total area of the property. If you are unsure about any of this I encourage you to draw something up and send it to me. I’d much rather help you on the front end than have to ask you to remove something later.

You won’t need to involve the County in any way but you do need to complete a driveway permit (attached). This needs to be submitted to Public Works so they can be sure that what you propose does not impede stormwater drainage. You mentioned a sidewalk, if the walkway is contained entirely on your property you do not need any kind of permit. If it is going to be in the right-of-way you will need an encroachment permit (attached) also from Public Works.

Hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’m here to help."

The only part I'm not sure about is the 25' setback for "parking". I don't know exactly where the right of way is, but I know our house had to be set back 25' from it. But if I call this driveway a "turning area" can that get me around this parking issue? every single house in this town has a car parked in the driveway within 25' of the right of way, so I'm not really sure what to make of that part.

Sounds like considering it a "turning area" may be your best bet.

Yeah I emailed him back and threw my wife under the bus and explained that she needs a lot of room to back her car out of the garage, which is totally not the case, but we'll see.

My grandpa who is 84 gave me a few of his tools this weekend, but I'm most excited about this drill press that he bought the same year my dad was born. Unfortunately I left the owners manual (yeah he still had it) at my dad's house. I'm gonna try to take it apart and freshen it up. Definitely needs a new power cord

Well it's been a while since I posted. Been really busy with work, projects around the house, etc. Built my daughter a bed, we built a playhouse under the landing of our deck steps, built the first of two window seats framing our fireplace, which doubles as our media center.

I've got the shop mostly set up the way I want it with the big stuff but haven't organized the little things yet.
One area we are working in is a covering for the ceiling of the shop to keep dust from collecting in the insulation and joists. I haven't found much out there cheaper than OSB, but I don't like the idea of lifting that shot 9' over my head. Also hoping something that might give some better sound deadening since the shop is under my master bedroom. Are there any cheap options for sound deadening?

Love the fridge! I'd put a keg of beer in there with the tap sticking out the side. :) You're a great carpenter. That bed is way sturdier than a store bought one.

Beautiful kids, too.

Thanks for the compliments. Everytime I look as something I've built I see all kinds if problems that I wish I had fixed but no one else ever notices. This is the play house

Ran out of trim, it was all left over PVC stuff from the construction, so I've got to get more from lowes. Need to finish the porch roof shingling, and I bought a patch for the Dutch door and a mail slot.

We used to live in Anderson, my wife still works there, I'm down there 1 day a week.

Back to the ceiling, I did more reading, I think "soundproof" is the wrong word, sound deadening is more what I'm talking about. From what I've read isolating the ceiling panels from the floor structure with resilient channels or similar will help, obviously only to a degree since we aren't doing the walls. Maybe double layer of whatever ceiling covering I use. I'm trying to avoid drywall just due to the weight and dust, but OSB isn't much lighter. Maybe I'll just staple egg cartons to whatever ends up on the ceiling!
