I'm getting ready to restore my Hollands 53 1/2 H. It has an anvil. Do you guys also paint the anvil or do you just leave it as bare metal?

I always paint the horn but not the flat surface. It will get polished and clear coated. The only exception is if I find that it would be more aesthetically pleasing to paint it.

I've tried to bring myself to letting it go in it's previous guise a couple of times, and just can't. I've got about $120 total into it now, and not sure what it would take to get it off of my bench.... although, they would look great side by side. For now, it will keep the Brits in good company

I bought a record No. 5 a few weeks back....

edit: I re-read the problem.... and I'm stumped too. I'm trying to remember how I've reassembled the ones I've done in the past..... I'm having a bit of a brain fart as well..

Thanks Riley, and Outlaw. The articles are a great reference and thanks for that CRSINMICH. Gonna strip the paint off today and see what is hidden.

On another note, priced a new CNC while I was in Denver. Looks like a new one is coming my way. I need one with a toolchanger, my old one is just about wore out. They need to lower the machine by 9 inches so it can fit in between my rafters. Gonna have some fun if Hass can help me. Now I have to sell off my woodworking machines.

Company I retired from bought a Haas Big Bore lathe.....It ran alongside Mazaks, Daewoo's, Hyundai, etc......It did quite well....The Factory Outlet was about an hour away so it was easy to get something if needed.....

Fairly sure Nodular iron is another name for Ductile/Malleable/Spheroidal Graphite cast iron.

If so then the top end Record vises are made from it.
The 114,112,36,84-34 are the current ones and in the past there were many more.

I bought a record No. 5 a few weeks back. and i got a screw replacement kit for it.. i managed to get it apart.. but for the life of me cant get it back together. the slide has a big plate at the end stopping me from putting on the main nut after the spring and washer is on.. is there a certain way i have to do things here? i thought maybe i had to slip the nut up from under the base.. but it doesnt fit through there.. i tried looking on a few youtube videos.. but i didnt find anything useful.. .. i can get the nut on fine with the spring,washer, and pin out.. but as soon as those are in.. its too tight to get the nut on.. and if i get the nut on first, before putting the pin in.. i cant slide the jaw back in.. the nut hits on the base... i know there is an easy solution to this.. im just having a major brain fart today. here is some pics of where i am at.. and the replacement screw.. notice the difference in thread on the screw..

Got it! I just went out and looked at my Woden #2, but I think the concept is the same.

- Remove the dynamic from the static jaw.
- Slide the main screw through the jaw
- slide the spring over the screw, followed by the washer.
- tension the spring and washer and secure them in place with the cotter pin/roll pin/whatever pin was originally in place



- slide the dynamic through the static until the jaws touch and flip the vise over
- thread the nut onto the main screw slightly and flip the vise back over, sliding the dynamic open to the point that you can fit the nut into its tapered slot.
- tap the tapered pin into the hole behind the nut, securing it into postion..



I think that's it.

Pretty much this. if I expect to use the horn (for light use of course) then I
l leave its working surface clean of paint.

Hey gents couple quick questions I picked up two old Athol vises 614 and 614.5 the larger one is really good shape smooth jaws, the 614 is bit rough needs some work. My question is are the jaws cast into the towers and are some of the castings fairly rough? I

15th edition (1954) p1577..

Saw an ad at 11pm last night for a 'canady-otto three jawed vise, $125'. I emailed the seller and came home with this...another Emmert 6a vise. My second in 18 months.

Just going to flip this. No desire to restore another. Needs a set of smoooth jaws, needs a base handle, otherwise in just great shape. Pd $100 for it. Bought a knife sander (2" x 48) as well for $25

Z3: Around here that vise would be worth a lot more than $38 USD. Unless there is something really bad going on with it, bring it home!

honza: Yeah, right... Others have made that statement only to follow in a few days showing off their latest acquisitions! Many of us have considered quitting or have even quit for a while but the addiction is too strong.

so i brought home the YOST 104 1/2 for 40 dollars canadian.. its got a 2 inch crack in the slide at the end. but its my first YOST.. and i drove an hour to look at it. so i grabbed it.. heres some pics of it.. gonna be cleaning it up this afternoon

Lots of guys drill a tiny hole at the end of the crack to keep it from spreading. Nice to be able to jump right on to the job of cleaning it up. Good for you!

Thanks for clearing up the mystery ganymede. The Machinery Handbook is not opened enough here in my shop. There is so much information there. Was required to take a class back in my Tool Making Apprenticeship just on the Machinery Handbook. Thanks for looking. I need to read about Nodular Iron, imagine a vise built out of that stuff.

I wont be using this vise. just gonna clean it up, paint it and put it with the few others ive "restored" . Would you still recommend the drilling? or just leave it?

Just finished this Parker 973. Painted in Hammerite red (which is more crimson/cranberry). Jaws came out good except when I sneezed and took just a smidge more than i wanted...oh well.

I ground and polished the handle and painted the inset section same as the vise. Also polished out the 'anvil'.

This is a 1950s model from Parker so the jaws are like new. Remade the handle and cleaned up tensioner.

Im not crazy about this red but im just sick of black and blue. Its going on eBay so we will see what the market thinks.

I finish a small 1 3/8" vise. This is the first one I have seen with the screw and slide side by side. Check out the offset jaws and little anvil with a horn on it. The center mount brass washer and handle look cool also.

Is anyone aware of how to date a Yost vise? i got that 104 1/2 all apart.. wire wheeled it and its all sitting in simple green rite now.. though only about half the slide fit into the 5 gallon bucket.. so ill have to dunk that again upside down to get the other half... anyways.. on the main nut there is a triangle and a number 4.. just wondering if that had anything to do with year?
