Chilang: so is it 100 degrees down in God's waiting room yet? might I suggest getting a much bigger bench or maybe another big bench because that one looks pretty full.

Its 100 and then some this time of year but no humididty so it doesn't bother me if I stay out of the sun. Now about July 4th through about end of September its fricken HOT I have seen it 100 at midnight many times. I manage big data centers for a living and they have large HVAC systems. Engineers who always tell me how smart they are use an average and try and build our systems with this data, they forget about the three to four weeks of hells warming oven and in the past have undersized some crucial components. Now they are listening a little closer to the guys who have been building them in AZ for twenty years :willy_nil

Scored a Reed 204R today. My first pug nosed vise.
They were originally asking $75, but offered it up for $60. I bundled it with a few other things and walked out $80 poorer.

Other than a little rust on the bare metal, some dirt and a little over spray, the vise is in great condition and runs smoothly. Original grey paint.

Oh you do ****!!!

GET: that's funny especially after Chilang mentions 100 degrees at midnight in the desert and you know Tops new friends might be hotter. :bounce:

Top: Well Done and Well Played to get another couple quality vises.

hopefully they were his to give you!!

Chilang: I don't envy your weather in the coming months because when it's 90's here for a week or two we are not happy. can't even imagine what 120's would do to me know because I sweat a lot more than I did when I was younger.

ALL: another big one is heading out the door tomorrow. GEESH it takes me way too long to make a pallet/Crate with my STUFF spread out in 3 locations and no trailer to build it in. Hopefully it will be in a GJ members hands this time next week and he can get the sore back moving that to it's new stand or bench.

i'll let the GJ member say what is inside the crate and after he does i'll post up a few pictures here or on the 101 thread about how to make a pallet/crate. BTW if you want to insure for damage via Fastenal now you have to crate it because too many claims from the guys not securing their STUFF to a pallet and then wanting damages. I've never had an issue with Fastenal yet, but having to build a crate takes a bit longer and more materials.

cheers all

Anyone familiar with the Athol 682? I searched around for a while and couldn't find any info on it. I want to replace the Columbian D43 1/2 on my home workbench with something more stout and this 682 is on craigslist for $85 and it's only 30 minutes away.

Athol/Starrett made good stuff so if you want a good user, and its not damaged/repaired some way, that's a prime candidate.

Nice looking vise lot's of similarities to a Parker. I have two Athols with stationary bases and they are very well made. The casting on mine are ruff but the mechanics are great.

Biker: if that's paint or glue and not a weld its a no brainer for a replacement for your littlish Columbian. check for welds and cracks and missing parts which there usually isn't (I've seen some vises with vise nut missing and guy selling was clueless) so just try it and if it goes in and out i'd buy it for $85. and I don't NEED a vise, but Athol Starret vises are some of the best made and I think I only have one and a member just talked me out of it.

also welcome to the forum and hope you stick around to learn and maybe share something you know. i'm still learning everytime I log on to GJ and as you can see I've got more than a couple posts now so I log on often.

cheers

Chi: have you done any in BLO? for some reason my picture didn't show up and might be because i'm still having issues with my browser. also in 100 degree heat BLO can dry up quickly so applying several coats doesn't take weeks like it does up here in the winter.

Loyd: sorry it's taking sooooooooo lonnnnnnng to GET R DONE. torn Achilles tendon and big vises don't mix. HOPING YOU LIKE IT.

I picked up a Parker Trojan 704 for my bench at work about two months ago to replace the junk Bessey from Lowe's someone installed before I was there. I've gotten used to how stiff and solid it is and now the little Columbian at home feels so tiny so I've been watching craigslist for a reasonably priced Reed, Parker, Athol or Prentiss in good shape. This would be a user for general stuff in the garage...holding parts for cutting, grinding, drilling, hammering, and welding a couple of times a month. I'm waiting on the seller to reply to my email.

I did a Reed 203 in BLO its behind the Wilton. I like it, but I like a little color sometimes I am thinking blue can always repaint it.

Chilang - your pictures aren't showing up. Did you link the attachments to your computer, or are you using a 3rd party site to host them ? If you linked directly to your computer, they won't connect when you're shutdown.

Here's one we just finished up, rounded off the nuts on the replacement handle for a cleaner look. Paint is Rustoleium hammered blue.

I went back to day two of a nearby estate sale and it was 1/2 off day. This little Craftsman vise somehow was still available so I nabbed it for $10. I look forward to a two tone paint job on this guy one day.

That is just like mine.
I have one just like that and it is becoming a regular user. Small but big enough for many jobs. Maybe one day I will give it a little love.
I only paid $6 including the bench but I recognize it for the great little vise it is.

I had one like it once before but before I could re-finish the thing my FIL saw it and took a liking and well, it was his birthday so there it went and I've been watching for another since. I just like the Craftsman styling on the sides and think it will make for an interesting paint scheme.

I hope you got after that one immediately! For $85 you can't go wrong on that vise.

Scored my first fpu today, 4". Traded a Columbian d45 m3 for it. In reality, the d45 was a better medium duty user, but one only needs so many users! This is a strange bird indeed, inside and out!

EG: FPU might be a strange bird, but I LOVE mine. you did good on the trade and if you want to get it back and he doesn't want to trade i'm sure I have one of those old Columbians sitting on a shelf and we can start a trade deal.

Chi: yes pictures look great now. so you bought that vise yesterday and have already stripped it and painted it twice?

thanks

Drives-dime a dozen, I will probably take a Jackson (Tubman?) off his bill tomorrow for tree work, because it's more then worth the trade. I literally trip over the Colombians at flea markets! Oh yea, and I'm a touch of polish..down the line somewhere ;)

I am looking for a 5" big bear (but who isn't?), but I can't get my fingers on one!

I am looking to downsize my stack, but that is probably my only fairly rare one. Except maybe the 436 humpback.

Why is that? Don't hear too many saying a big bear is their dream find. Mine is in need of attention, the wrench is gone but I have extras. It needs a new bolt made, it's seized and vise gripped round. I'm also not sure the front collar is original, but it looks way too well made to not be. It's proportionally perfect, I'll post a pic. Well you can kind of see it, it's all I have available right now.

EGT: Nice score on that FPU. I've only seen one in the wild and it is one of the vises I regret letting get away. Some time back when FPUs came up on this thread someone, I don't remember who, noticed that many FPU vises were broken in the same place - near the front nut in the picture you posted. In fact, the one that I saw was broken in the same place. Whoever it was said that they thought that the gibs were misadjusted - that's what those nuts are for. He thought that the misadjustment would put extra pressure at that point and cause the break. I have no idea if that is true but you might want to look into that before you get to far into things.

Most of my time actually spent using a vise, Is with a chainsaw in its jaws. 5-6" to me is the best size for holding the smallest to the largest saws I have. The swivel base holds great on the Parkers, and the vise size doesn't get in the way like bigger vises. The vise just looks perfect to me, and wouldn't mind looking at it doing a very monotonous thing.

This is what I'm hunting now anyhow, once I find it, I'll be looking for something different!

EG: not sure these old clamp style saw vises might work for your needs, but they usually can be found pretty reasonably so might be worth a shot. sorry I don't have a picture handy because it's in my old crashing laptop. maybe somebody else can post up a few pictures or VA's magic search function can find the ones posted if you haven't seen them I think their jaws are maybe 12 inches or at least 10.

JROBB: thinning the herd? nice to see you are still looking in on us.

Crs-I imagine your talking about these? It'd make sense to me that they have to be aligned evenly to spread even load to the casting.
