Judging by it being on a trailer, I'm going to assume that they just got lucky and picked it cheap or free somewhere. Cant help but want it though, especially given how much I like my 106. But holy vise, where the heck would I put it? I do not currently have the shop for it.

For a Reed 109, you buy it, then build a shop, house and everything else around it.

I saw an add for "garage full of tools, vise..." on Craigslist that wasn't far off of my route home from work. I stopped and was delighted to find this Morgan 88 for $60. It is in great condition with the exception of a missing pipe jaw and minor weld spatter. Does anyone have more info on this? Couldn't find much about dates but the old man who sold it to me said he got it new.

I also bought this craftsman grinder for $40, not because I need one but because it is a smooth old quality machine and I thought I would pass the deal along to someone here or someone I know. I think it will fit in a flat rate box - 1/4 horse and 4.5 amps! Pm me for more info if anyone wants it.

The Morgan Chicago's were made before 1960, this was told to me buy the parts department at Morgan. You can still get the jaws pipe and regulaer for them from Morgan, fortunately mine were in tact http://www.milwtool.com/v_swiv.htm.
Here is the 88 I cleaned up

I need some help, this is my first post. I have reviewed the vise help section and now have names for most of my issues. First my vise has no numbers or identifying marks. It is a 6” vise which is heavy 40lbs plus but appears to be cheaply made. My leadscrew is 7/8 in diameter is missing a spring, washer, roll ping ¼” and a sliding handle. This vise will be used for holding welding parts so precision is not needed or expected. Any suggestions on where I can get these parts. The spring and washer needs to fit into a 24mm area. I am including pictures, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, pughde, I am no machinist, but I would hit up Fastenal or similar parts supplier and I look on Amazon and see compression springs. A metal supplier can provide a handle bar stock.
Also, I would consider looking or asking on craigslist for a broken or welded 6" vise to scavenge for parts or straight up replace your existing. I just noticed your jaws are missing too. You don't want to pay near a new generic vise, which looks like about $56 at Harbor Freight.
You should fill out your location in your profile.

Looks like a stack of 6" vises, including :

Record 634
Record 112 or 114
Record 36?
Parker 6" eclipse?
Two ridgid pipe vises
An old, smaller Reed

I called, the 634 was asking $500, at which point my Command of French gave out.... So maybe some local GJer out there wants to have a dicker, bien sur!

I'm curious as to how they conform, as in what allows them to flex? Are they spring loaded? Or is there some other mechanism hidden away underneath?

Cwazy, I think it has something to do with the setting screw on the side making it adjust.---Go to page 593 and read posts 11849, through 11856, and see if Outlaw and B100 don't answer your question to your liking.---Cause I don't understand what I do know about them.:dunno:

$500, Merdé !
That would be the point where my Command of French would kick in full. Unfortunately, none of it would be pleasant ........ or civil. :lol_hitti

I can't help ya Zoomie, good to see more of your vises. I am going to Kansas this weekend to visit a close friend who only lives 40 miles from Demoman. Gotta go over and see his collection. If he let's me I'll take some pictures and share with everyone. I got a call today from a vise collector in Texas today and he mentioned I am in for a treat at Demoman's shop.

Been working on this project and should get it welded up in the next two weeks. The Parker is to big for a bench.

My guess is there are blocks inside that can slide fore and aft, tightening that screw locks them together. There are probably springs behind them to push them forward. I wouldn't have thought that screw had much locking force :S

Chilang - thanks for the info, that's a good looking vise! I am also thinking about shooting this one red and mounting it for use.

Loyd: hope your drill didn't run out of juice taking all those screws out of that pallet/crate. glad you like it and you are very welcome. it looks awesome on your bench

JKB: so how close are you to the guy to see that vise in person? I still haven't seen a real 8 inch bench 250+ pound bench vise in person and that one looks a helluva lot better than the trailer it's sitting on. if it was closer i'd have a looksee and probably sell a kid to buy it.

Jake: too small and Riley's right it's in his neighborhood. or i'm starting to look for the under 2.5 inch ones because I still have a small space on an upper shelf for some. the herd is a thinning, but hard to thin when I keep buying at least one a week. DANG YOU GUYS it's in my blood.

CW
: BEE CAREFULL that is some COOL OLD ENGLISH IRON you are stacking up. nice work on the safety screws in the bases too.

ALL: did I NEED A VISE? well maybe not, but this Rock Island is 130 pounds and has 6 inch wide jaws and probably one of the nicest 60 year old vises that I've seen or owned. it's not quite as pretty as JOE's and Chilang's and other's shiny ones, but I like my FARM FRESH Rock.

SPN: looks like you're in VISE HEAVEN around JOE and for $25 you could probably get a 200 pounder. well maybe not quite that big, but an open screw old vise that they made thousands of isn't exactly the best deal of the day. it's old i'll give you that, but it's a light to maybe medium duty and looks like grease or oil hasn't hit those threads in maybe 60 years.

JEEPER: sorry I won't click on any more links so see if you can attach a picture to your post via the paperclip just above where you are posting. can you see a name and model # or is that why you are asking for help?

Loyd: thanks

Not a Parker or Reed, looks most like a Prentiss. The 2nd pic looks like it has a Lewis swivel lock which would confirm it being a Prentiss. It has a swivel jaw; maybe a Prentiss 26 (Coachbuilder Vise)?

If it is yours, nice vise. If you are looking to buy, aside from the surface rust looks in good shape. See it in person and if there are no cracks or welds, $50 or less is a fantastic buy, up to a $100 or so is still a nice vise.

I picked up a nice Parkinsons 8A for 40 quid today, another addition to the pile. I must get a comparison shot next to a 7. Seems a lot bigger but I've not put them side by side yet.

I must catalogue my vices someday as I'm starting to forget what I have.

Also had an offer accepted on a medium sized Sevo vice today :) Pictures when it turns up.

That's a nice 8A
Mine isn't quite as nice but I did pay a little less for it. They certainly are a decent size though but I'm still keeping a lookout for a bigger one.

If a 9A turned up I think there would be 3 of us after it! :)

I think Fretters has a nicer 8A, the 8A's are relatively rare but I think I've only seen one picture of a 9a.

Just to give you a visual comparison for a known Prentiss patternmaker's vise, here's mine that came to me via several members here. It doesn't have a swivel jaw, or swivel base, but if you compare the jaw shape, spindle shape, etc, they are very similar.

The bing thing with Prentiss to look for is the back of the slide cracking....many of them have had that happen.

Thanks all for identifying the mystery Prentiss. I'll post back tomorrow if it comes home with me.

The 8A next to an early No 7
And next to the early No 8

Nice vise Cwazy, how wide are the 8A jaws. Very nice solid looking vise. I do not get much of a chance to see one up close. I found my picture of the paramo nut that is cast in and then threaded. I bet that was not easy to thread.

Wonder if Demo has seen the #109 in Pittsburg.---I think he likes them a little bigger than that.

VA, already set up to measure a Reed 109. Demo needs a jaw repair. Sounds like a challenge. I get to touch a Reed 109. Does the 109's have replaceable jaws. I kind of doubt it. Can't wait till Friday.

Hey VA
It's PittsburgH - the only city east of the Mississippi that ends in GH - hence PGH as the Postal abbreviation for Pittsburgh.

I think Demo has a sister in the burgh. He may have sicked her on it....

Drives
Not sure where this guy is. There is no map entry. My Father was PRR and as a kid we went to many a roundhouse and back then I saw vises that were as big as ponies...

I tend not to window shop. But, if the seller had a map entry and I felt he was close enough I would go take a look, with empty pockets.
