just a smaller unit, but for $10 I'll use it for buffing, etc. Is missing the tool rest on the left side. Came with 5 extra wheels/buffing pads. It fires up fine, spins down fine, just needs a good cleaning inside. It made a bit of a rattle when I had it on, but I think is just loose slag/dirt shooting around the right wheel, so I need to check that. Also need to to clear up the shields, can barely see thru them.

question on the small Thor grinder. Why would there be an oil access hole above each bearing clamp? The bearings are sealed, I think. Just wondering why add oil? Usually see that for open bearings or bushings.

The 1st pic is the oil access hole on the cover, the 2nd shows the clamp holding the bearing.

Thanks.

Picked up this Baldor 1/3 Grinder yesterday for $25. I repainted it to match my vise. Crazy thing is motor badge is on the back of it. You cant reverse polarity with this style motor, believe me I tried. I may leave it or if it bugs me enough remove it and reattach. It runs great.

You should be able to turn the base around, then swap the whole end assembly from side to side. That should put the badge in front.

Edit...nevermind...rotation would still be wrong. What if you pulled the shaft and reversed the shaft? I just can't believe it came that way from the factory..

Have you checked the threaded ends? Is it possible the shaft/body is already reversed, and you only need to reverse the base to match?

That model Thor usually comes with sleeve bearings, so the caps were probably already drilled for them

I tried everything you have to switch polarity to make it work. What was really weird is the on/off labels were upside down, strange.

Got this over the weekend and was thinking of repainting it but kind of dig the old patina like a rat bike or a old truck, so instead just cleaned it up, opened the case, heat shrank and rewired the connections and installed a new cord. The cord cost more then then the grinder, go figure. Runs great so I think I will use it for buffing.

What's nice about those motors is that the covers on the bearings come off and you can repack them with grease. Hard to believe those were Sears' lower line, as they were better made than many contemporary motors.

that is what I was wondering. Are you saying that someone changed out the bearing? or it is just a model change that used the older bearing cap and housing parts?

Thanks for your input.

Your grinder reads "Ball Bearings" on it. Mine just said Thor and had self aligning sleeve bearings. I think its safe to say your grinder was upgraded at the factory.

Picked these two up today won them in a auction they look beat up but both run smooth. One is a 10" Baldor I am guessing 1 HP need to do some research. The other is a 10" Van Dorn 1HP.

Gentleman, I am hoping you can tell me something about this grinder I just picked up.

How old is it?

Did IR actually make it, or is it rebadged?

What is the correct color?

Value?

What kind of hoses or ducting should I use for the dust ports - I'd like to keep my walls clean.

Thanks!

Its a Baldor 7" have one pretty much like it in my shop except it says Baldor and its gray. It was probably orange I would go back to a orange. Date this is a guess I would say 70's. Value at least $250 bucks.

Tour down the 1HP 10 inch Baldor. Taking the shaft to my friends machine shop to get the roll pin replaced they were sheared off and I cannot get them out with a hand drill. The bearing and motor are perfect it ran extremely smooth. Love that its a single phase motor. I think I might paint it Hammered Light Blue just haven't decided yet. .

Anyone familiar with "Trustworthy bench grinders" ?

full

full

That looks like a re-branded style grinder, typically a low cost model for department stores. I live in Geneva IL, and I think I would have seen another like it if Trustworthy was a manufacturer here at one time.

Picked this up last weekend. Mostly torn down now and getting cleaned up, rust removed....

That's a great 1/2hp grinder, and at 6.2 amps @ 115 volts it's very conservatively rated. Mine is the slower 1800rpm version, but I wish it were the faster one like yours so I could put a belt grinder adapter on it. Great video!

Yea I can't find a single thing online, then again "Trustworthy" and tools, brings up endless threads about people just talking about good tools :lol_hitti

Saw it on craigslist for 40 bucks but I'm giving it a miss. The casting on the outside looks kinda poor quality and I agree with you. It looks like a low end model.

No way that's a $40 grinder. $5 tops in my opinion...
