Parkinson ball vices are cool, I have been looking but am yet to find one, they are very rare. Although CW another forum member has 3 of them.

Rusty:
Nice score!
You got that on eBay so there were millions of other users who could have bid just as easily as you and thousands who lived near enough to pick it up without such a long drive.
Where were the other GJ guys near Chicago?
I am shocked that nobody outbid you. That vise is worth way over a hundred bucks. I would pay $60 for just the base and I bet others would too.

Yeah I was extremely surprised only one other person ended up bidding against me and he only raised me to 52 bucks so it was 57.19 with the state tax so I just gave the guy 60 bucks because he said his business was closing and he seemed like a cool old timer. Anyways the guy also had a 6in Parker fixed base on eBay so maybe people were watching that one. I just don't have the room for big vises currently so I just went with the wilton. Btw the 6in Parker only went for 160 bucks.

Picked up this Grand vise today at estate sale. Has sort of as quick release so you can slide it in and out instead of cranking the handle. Good shape works great made in USA. I haven't seen one before so had to add it to the collection.

GETRIDAONE - Thanks, I'll give that a try.

drivesitfar - Yeah, I think I might look for a swivel base if I can find one cheap enough. Really would like to find a model number or something so I could look for replacement parts.

Shiftless - Definitely will try an ACE hardware. My brother works at the local one and gets a hefty discount.

Picked this up at the estate sale of my eighth grade history teacher. The guy was pretty memorable to me because he ate grass hoppers , legs and all! Pretty cool that I own his Prentiss Bull Dog 94 now! It has a messed up static jaw insert but I'm pretty sure I have one in a spare parts bucket some where. Other than that it's really clean.

I just purchased what I think is a prentiss 26 and are waiting on delivery.
I did not get the you **** price like some of you fellas get, but if it is in good shape, I'll be tickled.
Always a gamble, buying without touching.

Top: how old would your 8th grade teacher be? i bet he bought that old prentiss new and happy to hear you might have a parts vise to restore it with.

Royce: I have the twin to your Prentiss #26 and love mine. i drove 3 hours and paid a benjamin for mine 3 years ago and the 75 year old son of the original owner swore the swivel jaw didn't swivel because he never saw his dad use it that way. nice find and you sure get some nice looking and pretty rare vises for being a stone's throw from the North Pole.

WELL DONE!!

drives,
I got my fingers crossed, hoping it is in good shape.
I've been waiting awhile for a swivel jaw coach makers vise to show up.
I'm hoping that this will closeout my desires for coach maker vises.
Reed 224, Parker 624-1/2, Holland 93, Columbian224-1/2 and now a Prentiss 26

Thanks

Drives My teacher would have to be in his early 80's so I'm not sure he was the first owner, maybe his dad or grand father. Also on the subject of using a swivel jaw vise. I never use mine with a pin. If I need to have more stability I just use another vise.

If you could please take a picture of the retaining ring on the main screw it would be much appreciated. On the Prentiss

Drive, I bought it a number of years ago, just stumbled on it at a CL stop for a 1" belt sander. I passed on the sander and came home with the vise. This one will stay with me. I do have a non swivel jaw coach makers vise ,it too is a Reed I think. That one I'll be selling soon in preparation for a shop reduction and move. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow.

DanDMachine: Nice vise. I've never seen a Grand in the wild but I'm keeping my eyes open. I think one of the other members has a few of them.

I just googled that but it looks a little different. Mine has an exposed screw. Not sure if the base would still work though :headscrat

Measure the OD of your base and the C-C from the center hole to the lock down groove and PM me back if you want to

Boatman, That's a great vise, but just remember, it's made for "light duty", as it was originally intended for pattern making. So it has those tall thin jaws to stay out of the way, not the heavy beefy Jaws a Machinist vise has, and the swivel jaw is a nice feature, but is not as strong as a solid jaw. They do have longer slides, so open further, but the further they open the more risk of a break if abused.

All that said, I wish I had one. Still Looking...

Thanks Outlaw it is good advise for all looking into these vises. I'm very respectful of my tools, so no worries here. I'm often amazed at the abuse I see that tools receive. It's not like I don't have other vises for really holding when I need to.

Here is one I still need to build a bench for. I'd love to find out more about it. Anyone seen anything like it? It dwarfs my Emmertt K1. I have more pics if other details would help. It opens a full 18". It weighs 85 pounds give or take

Boatman: your Wood vise has that English look of a Record or maybe a Parkinson, but odd that it doesn't have any name on it. maybe a prototype that a worker or owner took home from the factory?

you'll have to post up a few more pictures of this vise and maybe the guys across the pond or a few members here might be able to help you. also don't be afraid to post more pictures of that cool emmert in action or any other vises you own. just guessing but if you have an emmert on a bench and a coachmaker's swivel jaw sitting on one that you might have a nice 4 to 6 inch old vise or two sitting on another bench or stand?

VA: i sent you and email (I think because i'm still having tech issues) so if you didn't get one email or PM me for information on the Fulton.

Here are some more pics. There are no names or decoration on the front jaw I believe because the jaw and beam are cast in one piece and milled as one. Each piece has a hand stamped #2 so I don't think it was mass produced. The beam is 3" square. The top edge of the jaw is 3/4" thick and more than an inch down by the beam.

Boatman:
I can't remember ever seeing that style of vise without holes near the top corners of the jaws to use for screwing on pieces of wood to pad the jaws. Your vise seems to be quite a bit over engineered to be used in holding a piece of wood so that it can be planed or worked in some other manner. :dunno:

I know that at least one guy here uses this style vise (with soft wooden jaw pads) to hold onto vise parts he is refinishing. Wooden jaws guarantee no marring of cast iron parts.

I agree with you, no provisions to pad the jaws. There is some wear consistent with use. The jaws close with no perceptible racking, the machining of the parts is very well done.

Boatman; in case you didn't know you can post up more vise pictures as you have time to of those good looking vises you own. it's our version of **** and most of us would rather look at old tool pics cause the real thing is usually not far from us in the other category. you've got some great looking vises and probably a nice shop too. still don't have an answer on the maker of your vise, but i agree that those are probably part #'s.

keep those pictures coming and in case you haven't had a welcome to Garage Journal let me be the first to welcome you and very happy to have another member that has cool old tools and knowledge to share.

cheers

Thanks for the welcome, I've been lurking for a while just didn't have much time to jump in till now.
Here is my other carriage makers vise, it does not have a rotating jaw. I was wrong it is a Prentise. This is as I bought it. I did not paint the knobs red or use a bearing to retain the jaw. That was going to be the first thing I was to replace. It's looking for a new home.

I think it says 248.

The jaws are 4 1/2" wide and opens just short of 8" .

I think I had a bit of a score today. I picked up a Reed 105 and a Wilton 350 on a very cool cast iron stand from the Peninsular Machinery Company that used to be in Detroit (appears to have gone out of business around 2003). The Wilton just needs a plug for the end cap and a good strip/repaint. The Reed needs a bit of bodywork on the static jaw and then a strip/repaint. Grand total for all this goodness.....$125. I know it's not quite "you ****" pricing, but not bad!

To show I have the addiction under control, I'll point out that I left no less than 8 other nice vises there...mostly Reeds and Parkers.

Wow G-Man that's really cool base and with two vises for one price. I think that definitely deserves a You ****. The base alone is an awesome piece of Detroit history.
