Well I didn't get the big vise. It was an early ball nose Reed 208 in NICE shape. It needed some cleaning and lubrication and paint but the only physical thing wrong with it was some very small chips on the underside of the jaws. Straight handles, no welds or bigger hammer blows. Vise had a $500 bid when I got there, I went to $550, between guys on the phone and the other guy there went straight to $750 and I was out. The guy who was there had deep pockets, he had just bought the 520ish pound anvil in nice shape for $3,050. They couldn't even find the name on the anvil because of the paint on it but the buyer thought it may be a Hay-Budden.

I also didn't think to take pictures of the vise or anvil and the ones he sent me were crappy. I will try to add the later.

here's the Craigslist add http://easttexas.craigslist.org/tls/5701121321.html

Here's a few pictures from the Craigslist ad for when it disappears.

Got the handle all machined, just have to rivet the knobs on the ends. 21" long and 1" in diameter. For anyone wondering, the vise screw is 2" 2tpi

Surprised no one else commented on this, that cabinet is way cool, although I don't think it's $2500 cool.:shocking: Shame it ended up at an antique dealer looking for some hipster to repurpose it, it belongs in somebodies shop, like mine.

Here are a few pics I took while we were machining the handle. And a couple close ups of the ball ends. We'll heat up the ends of the shaft and peen them into the chamfers on the ends of the balls.

IH & VN: very nice work on the handle. just curious if you might have a plan to get some dark PATINA to match the old Blacksmith vise. do you?

McB: he probably had a request for a BLUE vise? :D

EG: i know you like Parker vises so guessing that little guy might have found his final resting place at least while you are above dirt. nice find and i've yet to see one in person.

BB: any idea how much the Reed 208 sold for or was $750 final bid? i just moved and worked on my 6 inch Rock Island vise and either i'm getting weaker or these big vises are getting heavier with the moisture up here in the PNW. sorry for your loss and at least you got to see it in person to see what you were missing. nice try.

Drives, I've thought if it, but not real plans as of yet. Letting it rust and cleaning it up would do it, but part of me hates to see something I just made getting rusty.... I'll figure something out!

I'm thinking this vise along with the stand I have in mind should be quite the tool for heavy shaping jobs! This is one vise you could beat with a sledgehammer all day and not hurt a thing.

I think $750 was the final bid, it was worth that much in my opinion but I couldn't afford it.

Don't feel too bad for me heh heh heh! :rocker:

Drives-yea, it's not going anywhere, and I don't plan on going below the dirt for a very long time! I'm on the lookout for the little vise paper weight now. I have a Parker match holder on its way as well. B-day gift iou from my better half! I dig the lamps, but I'd near kill for a big coffee grinder!

What I would do for some precipitation right about now!

Here's why I am still happy!

I got there early and made a deal on some smaller vises before anyone else showed up. Spent $300 for all the vises.

Wilton early Chicago C1, solid vise that needs a little love. No date on the slide, may be WWII military vise. Pipe jaws are missing and the main jaws are pretty worn, time for KMScott to fire up the new mill!

TWO Wilton Universal Turret rotating wood / metal vises. One early and one late.
Judging by the mounting bolt holes they have NEVER been bolted down. I just looked at what these sell for on Ebay and was pleasantly shocked!

Scored a unique if not valuable or rare vise at an estate sale a couple weeks ago and wondered if any one had any info on it...?

It's a Gambles Artisan bench vise and although not in primo condition, it does have some character to it. No idea who made it for Gambles,so I'm at the mercy of the vise experts on this forum. The part number "13-5241" wasn't any help either on a Google search. Thanks in advance.

The Gambles is the red one on the right. The other vises in the photo are a decent Wilton Shiller Park IL model, a fixed base Columbian, and the Littlestown in the forefront. the portable vise is a no namer. My stash of vises now fills this Contico plastic storage chest, FWIW.

Picked up this 5" Chuck Parker at a yard sale this AM. Seller said his grandfather bought it new, doesn't look like it was abused, or even worked real hard, jaws are real nice. Had to give $75., which is a lot for a bottom feeder like myself, but in this condition I didn't want to leave it behind. Earlier in the week I bought a Reed 4" coach makers vise on a swivel base, forgot to take pics before I blew it apart for a cosmetic refurb, was covered in porch paint.

Dimwitted, another member here, Steevo posted a Gambles Expert, which is a table clamp vise, on page 83.---So it may be that Gambles was it's own company or possibly a hardware store contracting out some vises with the hardware's logo.:dunno:

Saw that vise or one like it on EBay a couple of years ago and wanted to throw in a bid but I had my eye on a Lions Head Prentiss Coachmakers, so I had to stay focused.---I wanted the little Gambles for the odd factor.---It looks a lot like a Littlestown.

Nice Pull.

I'm not done yet!

This is the estate of a guy who had a welding shop. His family said there was a vise in the living room of the house. We couldn't find it and then one of the family said "it's in a box"

Box? I did some more looking and found a box with ATHOL STARRETT labeling on it!

Yes how about a NOS in the box Starrett Athol 623 1/2 vise! Man this thing is heavy!

Plus I picked up this early Erie Tool works oval slide 00C combo vise with only 2 1/2" wide jaws! Missing part of the old style through the bench swivel base and one of the three pipe jaws,

Plus they were going to scrap this half of a Craftsman vise so I got them to throw it in for free. Someone will need some parts!

BB: I'd really like to have a NOS Athol Starrett that you and a few others have found. other than the bright green TJ has painted a few of his vises i think i like that metal flake blue or whatever the color is on your Athol. nice save from the scrapper too.

VN: i bet if you are putting that big old blacksmith vise outside the patina will eventually be the same on your handle as the vise. looks like a great vise and since i own a couple vises with 1.25 inch screws with 4 threads per inch it's hard to fathom a 2 inch screw with only 2 threads per inch. you deserve a cold one so have an ICE TEA with me to celebrate your huge blacksmith vise restoration. :)

I AM NOT DONE YET LOL!

Yeah I have been messing with you guys a little bit.

The FINAL two vises.

Another Wilton C1! Even better shape than the Chicago C1, this Schiller Park vise dated 8-88 on the keyway has the pipe jaws, I removed the copper jaw covers to reveal practically perfect main jaws inserts. No big hammer marks, main handle is straight, swivel handles are a little bent, jaw supports are great, finger savers are still present. A very solid vise!

And the other one is a Columbian Gyro-Vise 73 1/2 WITH the pipe jaws. In nice shape with decent original paint, straight handle and no obvious defects. The swivel base was stuck but a few light taps with a small hammer and some hand twisting got it out, cleaned and quick lubed with some WD-40, swivels just fine now!

So that's 7 1/2 vises for $300
#1 and #2 Wilton C-1's
#3 and #4 Wilton Universal Turret's
#5 the NOS Starrett,
#6 the Gyro vise
#7 the Erie 2 1/2" combo vise
and the 1/2 of a Craftsman.

P.S. the guy who bought the big anvil started bidding over on me on other stuff I saw. With his deep pockets I just quit, I couldn't match him.

When it got to the Wilton Universal Turrets and the Chicago C1 he saw the turrets and declined going over my $100 bid on the turrets and "the vise with the missing jaws" which he never saw.

I paid $200 for the newer C1, the Starrett, the Gyro and the Erie.

Reed 208 in nice shape. I don't know what the final price was but it was a least $750.

LOL thanks Joe.

When I got home and started unloading vises a low pressure zone was forming, the temperature dropped 10 degrees to 86 and a thunderstorm started rolling in and I had to hurry to get pictures taken before I got struck by lightning!
