IH: i took cell pics of my mom's photo album a few months ago when i was there visiting. i actually sat on Gramp's lap while he cut in new logging roads with his little D9 that was on a constant tilt. i was 4 to about 7 or 8 before my mom heard he was taking me out to work so I didn't get to go after that until i worked with him a little in my late teens and early 20's. talk about a tough guy at 5'10" and 160 he could carry a 40 inch chain saw and a 100 pound block up a hill with fallen logs all over the hill at 77 years old and beat me up the hill when i was 22 just walking up the hill with nothing on my shoulders.

he retired from logging at 87 and lived to 93, but passed in 2003.

Hah! Sounds like my Grandfather who passed in 2011 at 84. Up until he was around 80 we used to go cut firewood. We'd both come back home wore out to the bone... He being too stubborn to take a break and trying to work like he was still in his 20's and me in my 20's trying to not look like a slouch even if I had trouble keeping up with him. What I wouldn't give...

Oh, and in what freaking world is a D9 "little"?? :p Same Grandfather ran D7's or D8's on the construction of the DEW line way back when... I need to get those pictures scanned.

I remember my Father borrowing a D7 once so my other Grandfather could do some landscaping work on our lot, and I tought that was HUGE.

I need to stop reading this thread and get to cleaning my vise's so I can post them up.

Here's a CL find I picked up today and I'm very excited to own it. I've been looking for a Versa Vise ever since seeing one here on this thread. I never knew they existed before GJ. It's in excellent shape with very little surface rust and just needing some cleaning. The dynamic jaw has some green paint over the original blue which the prior owner thinks was the overspray from a project his dad was painting many years ago. I'll try the usual tricks to get that off and save the original blue. $25 and I couldn't pay it fast enough.

RM: it looks like it's Seattle Seahawk colors already so you might want to shuffle it over to one of us in the PNW. nice find and i like mine.

Tim: yep a D9 is a beast of a dozer made by Cat(apillar). I had some pictures saved to my old laptop that still isn't cooperating, but here's my gramps in a D6 that i'm guessing was about 1/2 as big. not sure where i got the early 1900's picture, but thought you and maybe a few of the guys might like to see some hard working SOB's standing around. the guy cutting the tree is my gramps and guessing he was in his late 40's early 50's when it was taken.

ALL: anybody know of a maker of a quick release wood vise MADE IN TAIWAN. i had to take it off the bench to find out that fact and i haven't seen a name on it, but it works just like my bigger quick release Record wood vises so it's mine now.

i'll get more pictures as i have time, but trying to get ORGANIZED while the weather is fantastic today (85 and not a breath of wind or humidity).

I have one that looks very similar, made by "Brico", though mine I think is labelled as made in China. Works fine for what I use it for (which is holding parts in the machine shop, using the wooden jaws I put in it, when I'm worried about marring the finish or something).

I'll post a pic later ...

You did good on the tall jaw Versa-Vise they don't come around very often and what you paid you did very good. I saw one listed on CL (not saying it sold) for $425.
Enjoy it.

LOL....I've been waiting for that to turn up here. I actually saw it just a few minutes after it was posted and knew somebody would ****** it for $25! I'm looking for one with the shorter jaws, but thought about that one because it's pretty clean.

As I sit here reading GJ and watching the Lions in their first pre-season game look equally as bad as last year, you got me thinking maybe I just leave the colors and become a Seahawks Fan!

Thanks Jim, I agree at least around here they don't come up very often and not at low prices. I had to snap that one up.

G-Man, When I saw it it had been listed for 2 hours and I could not believe it was still available. I too had been thinking of the shorter jaws but since I don't have a vise yet with this style jaws it will be a good addition to my garage. This is a keeper for sure.

Drives: here is the 'Brico' I mentioned earlier. When I bought it, it had barely been used. I have wooden jaw inserts, plus I made a couple different size V-blocks that are great for holding larger round parts, like the vintage Stanley router motor I'm repairing...

Yes, I'd rather have a nice Record, but this works perfectly fine ...IMG_1388.JPGIMG_1389.JPG

Here's the latest addition to the ever grown vise family! This one came from the old bus barns in my home town. The current owner father was a wrench there and brought it home when the old building was raised. It was never set up and remained in the same condition it was in from the bus barn. Every thing is free and working and it has all of the original brackets and hardware. This Yost pattern maker weighs in at 82 pounds!

Thanks for the pictures, I love seeing pictures of older machinery, mostly because that's all I've ever run and grown up around. The tractor in my avatar is a '64 and is actually the 2nd newest one in our family. We still have a couple mid 50's farmall's runnning on the farm. I'll have to dig up some pictures of my Granfather's next time I go up north.

I've got a 933 like that. Nifty vise!

Not all of them are big, here's a cool little vise, but not my smallest.

Sandman, you mean that 608 above? What diameter is its base? I have a couple of mill vise bases in different sizes that might be adapted?

Sandman, I don't know if Wilton/Columbian produces anything compatible to the 608 now or not.---If they do, they would also sell parts I would assume.:dunno:

Aside from that, you might appeal to the GJ classifieds.---But I'll tell you, a vise that nice deserves to be complete IMO.---But it's a jewel just like it is.

Well, I finally at least saw an 8" vise in person, a Reed on a swivel base. Guy who has it isn't sure if he wants to sell it or not, but said he probably would for the right price. I offered $400, he said he already turned down $500. Said he may list it on Ebay with pickup only, hoping to get $800 or so, if he decides to sell it. Seemed like a nice enough guy anyway.

I must be on some sort of bad roll at the moment, today I saw an awesome Greenerd #15 arbor press sitting out in the weather outside a machine shop. Stopped to look at, looked to be in good shape other than a section broke off the daisy wheel. Shop owner came out, we started talking, I asked about the press. "It's not going anywhere, I think I'm going to take it home to make a mail box post out of it". Asked me what I wanted it for, I said I want to use it as a press. Didn't help. Another real nice guy, we shot the breeze for a while, then he gave me a tour of his shop, had some very impressive equipment. Including a pic of the same press I found on the web.

Todays finds pair of Records.
View media item 62764Went to the scrap yard with some lead and found these, £40 for the pair (also got a couple round files and a box of self tappers I picked up for that)
No1 on a swivel, in decent order 3" jaw.
3 Ton appears unused but is almost locked up from rust, it will only just move, both were outside. 4" jaw. Ok deal I guess but I could only make a small profit if I sold them on.
He also had an OK 1 Ton that was completely locked up and a rough 110 with no jaw inserts also mounted outside but they use that one.
This yard everything is for sale apart from tools, they use them to dismantle but everything is left outside on any flat surface.

They should be quick enough to get back working again Dutch
That brass Parkinsons turned up yesterday, need to find some time to strip it down ..... but it's intriguing, there was never a quick release fitted to it even though the casting is designed to be machined for one it has ever been machined.

So it was a plain screw vice and somebody found a quick release dynamic that fitted. I would guess that the brass vice would have been a special order item and Parkinson would have made whatever the customer wanted for the right price.
Those Records are ok considering they have been outside in the rain for a while. I will probably sell the 3 Ton (its even an English made one) and I have a nicer No1 that may get that swivel base.
I also got a 84 this week (I haven't done a pic yet) for £25.50 that just needs cleaning and paint and in an ideal world new jaw inserts, but I'm going to give that one to my bro for his birthday.

Dutch: nice find at the scrap guy's lot. that 3 TON looks new except for the rust. if it doesn't say MADE IN ENGLAND and just Sheffield, England isn't that a made in China vise ASSEMBLED in England?

CW: looking forward to seeing what that Parkinson looks like without the rust.

Dodge: any pictures? personally i'd spend $100-150 and get a nice old 4 to 5 inch old US made vise that seem to come up in your area fairly often if you are good at finding and heading out the door to pick one up.

the Babco is an ok vise and will do a decent job, but i know you'll like the older nicer one way more than the extra $100 in your wallet or bank account. just looking over at my benches with mine sitting on them puts a smile on my face as i'm sure others feel the same way.

good luck and post pictures and ask questions if you have any.

Doesnt look very old outlaw and is in pretty nice shape. Should i try $30.00 instead.

If you are pretty desperate for a vise, NOW., that's OK for a user. just remember the Babco's are NOT a machinist vise with the cast and milled slide. the Slide is a Malleable iron formed channel, pressed/Cast into the D jaw.

I'd keep shopping for an older American, English or European Vise...

Wow Zoomie! Nice collection, thanks for sharing. I do watch for anvils here, but only come across what seems to be people flipping them for a high price on CL.
