KM: nice clues about the Rock Island jaws fitting the Craftsman 519x's.

ALL: I recall Balane mentioning last year that he had a Craftsman built by Rock Island with the same size jaws (5 inch wide) in his shop at the same time he had a Craftsman 5197 and said they weighed the same. anybody have some old Craftsmans made by Rock Island and Craftsman 519x's to weigh to confirm that fact?

one fact that stumps me a bit about the 519x's is the oil holes and vise nut holders that are more Reed like than any other company. since Reed was also a maker for Sears Craftsman vises maybe Sears got the permission from Reed? anybody have pictures of the 519x's parts handy and saved on their laptop to post?

OLDIE: I seem to recall a more elaborate dream you had about 5198's and the HUGE OLD ROCK ISLAND CRAFTSMANS or HUGE REED MADE CRAFTSMANS about 3 years ago. care to pull that post up because pretty sure you started all this 5198 stuff? i'd still love a 5198, 5199 or that 360 pounder we have never seen or even know if one was made. and the 695 pounder so TJ can find a tasty hat.

Every time I start smoking my shoelaces...

And...

Gaze out at a sunset on the Gulf of Mexico...

And...

Take a pull on a 33 degree Corona...

I have the same day dream...:headscrat

I'm going to find an old hardware store with three N.O.S. Craftsman vises...A 5197, a 5198, and the unknown/only one ever made/Unicorn 5199 6" 175 pound Machinist vise...And buried under a pile of pallets --- a 345 pound 5168...:ninja:

And then I zone back into reality...

I have had that same dream, has to be real

Bulletpruf, I checked the EBay link and only 47 0f those German vises were posted on my end, so I'm missing a few, give or take 650 or so.:dunno:

EDIT---I do know of one little German swivel head that is coming across the pond.---But anything can happen between there and here, so we will see.

Not sure why they're not showing up for you, but I just double checked -- I've got 15 pages of vises, at 50 vises per page. These are all used vises, too. Nothing new. Just not terribly familiar with the German brands; need to educate myself a bit and pick up a few.

Here's one that likely won't ship - 7" Eikar - not cheap at 550 euro (about $600). http://www.ebay.de/itm/Riesiger-his...188108?hash=item41b045074c:g:tMMAAOSwHoFXqu7X

Welp, picked me up another one today. Its a Parker 26X, which I can not find any info about. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. The gatorade bottle and Wilton 9500 should be a decent size comparison. Guy threw in the piece of rail as well for taking the "big hunk of steel off his hands"

BP: LEINEN are one of my favorite vices made in Germany and the 150cm (6 inch) wide jaw weighs 112 pounds for the non swivel version and is as good a vice as any i've owned. the jaw that moves is the rear jaw like the Bison FPU vices. Leinen looks like the one you posted a link of so guessing they had other brands trying to copy or like Wilton they copied other's. there are also many other cool old European vices you can collect if you have any funds left over after your car and parts purchases.

Oldie: i couldn't find the 5198 dream, but saw where i mentioned it on this thread because i think you posted it on one of those little vise threads that come up often. it was a good dream and did get a few 5198's out in the open. so start dreaming more about the 5199 or the 300+ ones. do you have anything to ad to the 519x's Mystery? how about posting all the pictures you've saved of all of them and one of BC's family of them so maybe he can start posting again?

Hi all -

Unpacking done, here are some photos of a few recent vises obtained as a side effect of vacation through the eastern US and Canada:

First, an 8" Parker No. 60 found in Maine, came from a railway :eyecrazy::

I was pretty happy with the Parker as I was always looking for an elusive 8" vise.
Then an 8" Ridge Tool Co. 81P appeared in Quebec close to where I was.

Four hours later.....

I got back to where I was staying and dropped them off at a freight company.

Then I looked on Craigslist and just over the border in Syracuse

A Prentiss No. 58! :willy_nil

So off I drove a couple days later........ This Prentiss had been sitting in the owner's garage for over 50 years. The jaws are massive and fit very well.

Now that is a vacation, three 8" vises. Nice job Thrumcap. The Prentiss has massive jaws, are they serrated? Thinking they are custom made. Without knowing what your vacation costed you might have earned a You **** award. All three are winners.

The Wilton C1 saga continues. I ripped the paint off with a wire wheel, gave it a bath in my parts washer and straightened the handle as best I could. The jaws are not perfect, even stick out 1/8" or more on one side and are flush on the other. I hit the vise body up with my angle grinder to clear the few spots that had welding spatter. I am not going to go authentic on the color but I'm planning to hit it with that gloss Bahama teal pictured. The more I work on this thing the more I realize it's a perfectly serviceable vise, it just won't be a real showpiece. I still don't think it's worth sinking money into it for pipe jaws and a swivel base although I would really want it to be complete. I think I will wait for another Wilton in better shape, hopefully a C2 or C3! The best part about this one is that it was relatively rust free. Really easy to clean up.

Nice vacation planning to run accross all those big vises there Thrumcap! I'm a big fan of Prentiss but that Parker is just spectacular. All three look great though. Good thing you didn't have to choose just one. Ed.

You might find some used jaws and a base for a reasonable price, you never know.

I wouldn't worry about the swivel base. The pipe jaws could be made by hand if you had the patience. A beginning hobby machinist could knock out a set of crude yet serviceable ones in under an hour on a med sized vertical mill. Even a mill drill would be able to do them.

HONZA: looks like you've still got some room. looks like a good group.

Thrum: WELL DONE SIR!! not just one 8 incher, but 3 on a little vacation. Wow. so you didn't drive them home and had them shipped. were you able to ship across the border and how much to ship those BIG UNS?

Jreb: thanks for the interior pics of the 5198 vise. so how many vises have the split vise nut with the screw to tighen or loosen it? I haven't seen another one. How many vises have a threaded sleeve? the first time i found mine while taking apart my 5196 it amazed me. the vise nut holder is one of the easiest ones to remove and replace that i know of and is sort of like a Reed. any other clues or answers to the 519x's MYSTERY MANUFACTURER DO TELL?

ALL: a friend of mine saved this one from the scrap pile and gave me a call. It's a parker 106.5 so technically the widest jaw vise i own currently. it's had a rough live with the cracked dynamic so if any member has a good dynamic for it that they want to sell please PM me. it also needs a main screw holder and surprising to me is that it only needs one screw and not the 2 screws to hold it in place like my 956 did.

not sure of the weight, but guessing the jaw width is 6.5 inches.

Thrumcap,. It seems you have a knack for finding large and unique vises and sometimes it is just luck. Persistence pays off in the search for old iron.
Congratulations

Nice haul thumcrap. I was eyeballing the parker and the Prentiss, but I didn't have the time to make the drive to either of them. Good find on the rigid too.

Shipping worked out to @$40 USD per vise from Central Canada to Eastern Canada. I didn't ship across the border, drove across twice myself.
Costwise, the Parker was in the USD 400 range, the Ridgid sub 100, the Prentiss in the 300 range.
Now, I definitely am interested in a hydraulic lift table.

I think they may be normal for that era. My 1945 C1 is the same way: when I flipped the jaws over they no longer aligned at the ends. I think that Wilton ground them to final size when they installed them at the factory. If you get new jaws that are a tad longer, you can do the same thing and have perfect fit.

Fantastic haul! I have been a fan of the Prentiss 58 and one day hope to find one. The Parker and Ridge are no slouches, all three are heavy metal. (You might need another artist for your Avatar)

$120 to ship over 800 pounds, you did pretty good there also.

VA, right click on BP's link, do copy text and paste it into your address bar, that should take you to eBay.de. By clicking on the link you will get redirected to your eBay, ".com".....or in my case to eBay.CA (which had 4 results).

A while ago I acquired a rather tired Wilton 1760 Tradesman. I had always wanted to do a Wilton in Snap On red, so this became my chance.

It needed a lot of TLC, some Devcon, and other cosmetic repairs. The anvil area was pretty pockmarked, with one big defect that could be reduced but not eliminated. New jaws, new pipe jaws and some fabricated Snap On badging completed the job.

BTW that 1760 is pretty heavy.

Just looking for some opinions. All things being equal, which is better a paramo no. 5 or a 4" wilton bullet vise? (Model number on the Wilton escapes me now)...I really like my wilton but damn that paramo is solid as hell. Which would you guys choose?

I've never had either in my hands, but judging by the pictures I've seen here, I think I'd go for the Paramo as well. I like a beefy block of iron over a dainty little sausage.

I'd take the Paramo any day. But I may be the oddball here. :D

I'm leaning that way myself. I think I will keep the Wilton and someday hand it down to my son. Does anyone know if the Irwin Record jaws fit a paramo?

I do have a Paramo albeit a no. 6 as well as a 4" bullet. The bullet is a pleasure to use like most are and I really like them. I love certain aspects of the Paramo also but there is one thing that bothers me about mine. It is the stupid swivel lock on the base. Not very positive and I always feel when getting the set screw tight enough to kind of hold it is near failure. I've considered taking the base off and just mounting it solid. Here is a pic showing the locking ring. Ed.

Worked a bit more on my C1 tonight, I just have to wait for it to dry and it's ready to re-assemble. I will probably brush the Wilton logo black to make it stand out but that's it. I did not end up filling the holes in the side with epoxy. I may do it later on but I'm REALLY happy with the color and how it turned out. Went heavy on the paint, used an entire can and half a can of primer.

I do know that a Paramo #6 takes the same jaws as on the 1760 and 746 Wilton vises. 6 x 1 x 5/8 thick with 4" C/C on the 5/16:18 screws. You might look at the Wilton jaws for their 5" vises.
