Re: 1966 F100 EcoBoost Engine Swap & 1966 427 Project

That thing would be one step closer to becoming a pair of boots. Dang.

Thanks for the updates , love the pictures.

Eco 1 is looking fantastic. Can't believe how far you've come with it. Lived in Tucson back in the late 80's and I don't miss running into Mr. Rattler one little bit.

Thanks! Only other Rattler i have see was a 6' swimming across a lake when kids were water skiing and rafting. Never at any residence of mine. A few snakes but no rattlers.

Wow TW that looks fantastic!!!! Sooo nice.
Thanks!

Awesome pics, it looks great!
And I like the "after" shot of the rattler. :D

Looking good!
I vote rattle snake steering wheel!
I "Steered" over him . .

This week was "TUNING" week on Eco 1. Only got 4 runs in and now the rain has showed. Sunny skies for months then when I really need the sun the rain shows up. Go figure. Hoping tomorrow it will clear long enough to get a few more Data Logging runs in. I really really gotta get going on Eco 2.

As I said before just a few simple things on Eco 1 to make it road worthy and its been over a month already.

Was hoping to make Scottsdale Pavilions car show tomorrow but not looking so good now. Gotta double and triple check all the cab and core support mounting.

This. Is. Awesome! My dad had a 66 F-100 that was going to be handed down to me (it commemorated his graduation from high school) until some family issues got in the way following his death. I had planned on doing a 5.0L swap but the eco boost is a much, much cooler idea. If I ever come across a 66 in my travels I'll have to think long and hard after studying this thread in detail.

Sounds cool! I have 4 (66) trucks here plus a '61 Uni. Take your pick

Just checking in Boss, how you doin?

Any news TW? Did you find a way to get AC back up in your shop? I hope to hear some sort of news..

AC is completely toast. Simply no funds to repair or replace.

X2 Hope all is well.

There was hint of getting Eco 2 into SEMA 2016. After that died down and the A/C blew, any motivation left me. At this time I am unable to do much of anything.

I was kinda excited about having Eco 1 back on road but Discount tire sent a place to fix the wheels they messed up. Business sent said there was nothing he could do. They also messed up sidewall of at least one tire. Still not resolved since May.

Simply cannot take the stress of it all anymore. A hour or two per week just puts me further behind . .

Oldest Daughter getting married in about 5 weeks in MN. I really wanted to get Eco 2 done for that as a drive-away-veh. Crushing blow to me not being able to get that done for her.

Its probably best I no longer "rant" about this stuff. Weather will cool mid October. In the mean time I will make "attempt" to sell little items no longer needed to keep the lights on.

If somehow I am able to make a large step in progress will report back.
Motivation & Desire have clearly left the building . . . .

man, i am so sorry to hear about your troubles, reaaly bad deal with the daughters wedding. sure hope something works out. i hope you at least have ac in the house. if you don't, i think all the shop probs will shrink in comparison. you can ride out a shop heat wave, but not a house one. maybe just take a break and cool down. we are 106 here today, so not getting anything done. all right by me!

Man, I just spent a week reading this thread from beginning to end!
What an epic double build!

You always worry about posting too much detail about your work? Never! Post MORE detail about how you do things. The craft of metal work needs to be passed on to the next generation. I learned more by reading this thread than I though would be possible.

Eagerly awaiting the next round of posts.

Off topic: I will be coming through Arizona next week on my way to Utah. Though I won't be coming through Phoenix, every 1966 Ford F100 I see I'll think it's you!

Keep healthy and "Keep on Trucking!" :pimpflash

Looking like this party is over. Been following since day one and I don't do FB as many others. Hoping all is well. I even jumped over here from the HAMB to follow it way back.

Big thanks to all for the kind words and hanging by . . .

I am back now after a long "time out" away from Social Media.

Daughters Wedding this past weekend and my middle daughter moved to Europe for a 1yr free scholarship. She just left Monday evening.

So much has happened not so sure I can catch up.

One of the "Biggie" things I had hinted to prior is starting a new job.

Its taken months to get to point I about had the job, went thru numerous steps phone interview, more online documents then a face to face interview Monday of this week.

A HUGE problem for them arised & something I had simply never thought of.

In a dozen or so jobs in my 41+ year career they cannot verify a single one of them!

It goes something like this

Upper Michigan my old stomping grounds.

1) Ford dealer long gone
2) Auto Parts Store long gone bought out by a big conglomerate
3) Auto Parts Warehouse. same thing long gone
4) Open pit Iron mine it closed for good a few months ago
5) Another Ford Dealer also long gone

To AZ

1) Little car dealer who sold Delorean and other specialty cars. Gone a long time ago
2) FL-M Dealership also long gone
3) Huge Restoration shop long gone
4) Small Resto Shop long gone

Minnesota - Body Shop now long gone, just drove by the place this past weekend

Back to AZ

Accident reconstruction place long gone.

Major Insurance company which I would have started at over 20 yrs ago now. Cannot find a single person I worked with still working there.
The entire office has moved twice since.

A bunch of "on my own" stuff I guess they can call me . . LOL

I had never thought of it but a 41 + yr work history and not a single verifiable job at this point.

They said If I cannot verify how can they? Good point there.

Currently trying to find a person/boss I worked with. May not get the job because of it. All I can say is its a pretty high security type job. Do not want to reveal anything further. Its about a 30 min drive from my house.

This still blows my mind of 41+ years & I myself cannot find a person to verify any of them. Guess I outlasted em' all? LOL

Eco 1 update:

Nearing 1100 miles so far with ZERO issues. Still do not have the "final Tune" finished as no good place for "testing"

Temps have been over 100 for months. Finally should start cooling off starting tomorrow.

Never did replace the garage A/C. Too many other surprises for the $$ needed.

Have a small wall unit to give some relief but simply not enough in 100 + deg heat.

Eco 2. Pretty have what's needed except time to get on the road. Have not touched it in a long time. I do know exactly what's needed to make it all work though.

1956 Belair the 19 year project: The special order custom wheels showed up at tire store late this afternoon. They would call prior to 6pm to pick up. That did not happen. Will pick up in morning.
It still needs Radiator Overflow mounted and finished. A final buff n polish/full detail. A bit of chip touch up after 18 yrs of sitting. It runs & drives absolutely wonderful.

We did add a total new steering gearbox. Will add a 2" dropped spindle and better front disc brakes. Then it will be DONE! Friend mel can start to enjoy. ( a few miles now on current tire/wheel package but they rub in small corner)

I also hinted about another project:

Big Inch Twin Turbo Boss 429 powered Pickup! (with EFI) That is supposed to start Mid November but will see.

Found another 1966 F100 short bed custom cab project truck but not sure on that one. Simply do not need another "Project"

Will post some catch up photo's when time allows.

So it all boils down to starting a entire new career @ age almost 60.

Or Start doing resto/mod stuff on my own, expanding shop etc.

I like it as a hobby fine but not so sure at my age a good idea to get on big projects. With a partner and help yeah. By myself, Just cannot see it happening.

60 is creeping up on me very fast now! LOL

Hope the job situation works out. For employment proof what about paper history? Old paycheck stubs, company communications to you, benefits information from the various companies? Anything in writing that proves you worked there.

Yeah have that but think because of type of job it is and part of policy they need to speak with someone. Kind of a very high tech & in some ways related to my eco projects. 599 applicants now narrowed down to a few. Working on finding phone number for a prior boss/co-worker I tracked down in Texas.
I will probably still be in the running if I can get a phone number for him. If not do not think my chances are good at this point.

They are aware of this thread but not sure how much they have read . .

Your project alone is enough qualification for any job in my books.
Could be part of qualifications as I really dont have much education other than high school 1 college class and many years at the "Skool" of Hard Knocks . . and "Trial by Error"

Maybe this will help . .

So far Eco 1 has worked out better & beyond my wildest dreams. Simply put the most fun driving vehicle I have ever owned. A big part of that is I can hop in and go distances I never dreamed of going in other "projects". Although I did take a Shelby on a 1500+ mile trip. That was great too but just something about Eco 1 so far. At just shy of 1100 miles with zero issues I am having difficult time staying out of it. Nice thing is "Miles" will not matter. No worry about keeping "Low Miles" on it.

A week ago this past Saturday I took it to its first little car show at SoCal AZ.

Then took it to Scottsdale Pavilions for first time that evening. Too Busy answering questions and took zero pics.

Then on Sunday 9/11 the wife and I took it down to view the 9/11 Memorial at Tempe Town Lake. They had a flag and name tag for each person who's life was taken that day.

Pretty much as it sits now. I have the ride height/stance I wanted. The A/C has been charged and is working. Still a lot of metal work to finish it up but after 4.5+ years the enjoyment of just getting it out and driving is beyond words.

Probably the most impressive thing other than acceleration or handling is the BRAKES!
Phenomenal would not describe how well they work. The handling is like nothing else I have ever owned. That includes the late model Shelby's.

Having this good of a driving experience for a 50+ yr old truck is crazy. Squeaks and rattles aside from no weatherstrip or seals. All along the thought was if I remove 1500 to 2000 lbs from a stock truck. Do a major lowering of center of gravity, the much lighter weight on stock springs "SHOULD" provide a firmer but great driving truck. The Electronic assist Steering is also wonderful. I would venture to say the stopping distance from 60-0 could be as little as 100' or at least feels like it.

95DD36BC-AF65-4A25-B873-E8F849E832ED.png

I also changed the interior color to Black from Gray.
When I started project I picked up some NEW take-off seat covers in black & tan for 300.00 delivered. I recently decided I loved the look of the black covers. Sold the new Tan set for 250.00 which in turn gave me 50.00 & a bit of time invested in the new Black ones. I still have a complete gray interior I can sell.

Trying to use up as much of donor truck as possible I will also use the black carpet from it. Plan is to finish up the duct work, install dash pad then cover the dash in a nice black leather.

I also tackled the dreaded job of doing something with all the extra wiring inside cab as needed room to add a seat for passengers.

A couple weeks ago this was the wiring mess after stripping out stuff not needed. Kinda like holding a grenade with pin pulled. One wrong move and the . . . truck would not start. LOL

How I ever managed to make that into a wiring harness and have the truck actually start and drive is beyond me . .

I build wiring harnesses for early model Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers as a side hobby. I do not think I could do that for a living. So I know what you mean about taking on what you love to do as a hobby, as a real job. It would just take all the "fun" out of it.

The Land Cruiser harnesses I build are dirt simple compared to what you faced with the EcoBoost wiring! My problem is sourcing the no longer made connectors. I am very impressed with what you and Walt did!

Keep up the great work! With your level of karma, you will get that job! :3gears:

Assuming you've tried to Google the former boss and find contact info, also try looking on Linked In or other similar professional type sites. Many people at least open such an account with basic email contact info available even if they don't actively update it. It could lead to an email which then leads to a phone number.
If you Google this boss first by name look for any sites like Linked In that he's listed under. That link may allow you to view his basic page info without registering for the actual site.

PS. Just scrolled back and read/looked through the latest update and great pics in action. the truck looks great and I bet a real thrill to drive it. Any car show you attend be ready for a constant stream of questions as you have definitely broken new ground with this build.
CONGRATS!

TW, I was at So Cal car/swap last Saturday also. I got there early & was parked in the back. Would have loved to see your ride. When I got out front you had gone. Some day I will see it!
