I think the daytona jack is definitely a clone, we can see it from the schematic of the parts. However, parts that matter are all not visible to the naked eye. So the cartridge and seals and what not are probably not the same, but overall alot of the design is there. Probably is a good deal for a bunch of people. Snap on list price is way out there.

Person I quoted was a Snap On Dealer for many years. It would have been to his advantage to say Irwin was not the OEM for those sets, yet he seemed to agree that they are Irwin.

Also, I have to laugh that Snap On is claiming they have a unique jack design that people associate with Snap On. Pretty much every low profile quick pump jack looks similar.

Bottom line: When you no longer design and build in house you lose control of the process. Snap On has lost control due to buying from overseas. Their solution is to bully others to help eliminate the competition. Many people are going to really start questioning why they are paying Snap On prices for the exact same product with red paint and different stickers. Snap On should learn from them. Quit offshoring everything, and go back to selling a premium product at a premium price...

Awww man. I just bought mine last Sunday. :(

You can redeem a coupon for purchases made within the past 30 days, if the drive is worth $20 to you. :) No need to haul the jack back to the store either, just bring your receipt.

Sweet! I'll go back for the coupon! 10 minutes is worth $20

Pick up two more......

Limit is 3 - While supplies lasts.

I bought that one last summer so I could rebuild the front suspension of my Ford Ranger. It works like a champ! Don't expect to be able to pick it up an carry it around, though. :D

This thread was enough for me to pull the trigger on the Daytona. Exhibit C apparently. I agree with the comment earlier about poo on the shoe - if you want to dance with overseas manufacturing, in jurisdictions with no regard for intellectual property, then be prepared to deal with the ramifications. In this case Snap On has, and they'll lose the lawsuit.

I check it out at HF. It feel very high quality and beefy. Might pick one up myself if price drop enough. It seem like you can patent everything in the US. Aside from Apple patents for round button, shade of white, position on device, glass stair, etc.., Fluke also patent the yellow color on protective cover for their DMM. Fluke sue eveybody that use yellow cover claiming people can not tell the different between a $10 and a $300 DMM.

The funny part is that make a clone close enough that the average person is dumb enough to buy it, thinking they are getting a deal.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

When you google this "harbof freight snap on jack lawsuit" garage journal is the first hit!

https://www.biztimes.com/2016/09/22/snap-on-suing-harbor-freight-over-floor-jacks/

This link mentions discussion from tool forums stating buyers are confused about the origin due to similarity. Odd thing to think that our discussions are being used to present snap-on's case. Seems like the HF snap-on Discussions here have perked outside interest.

Going to be interesting one to watch for sure.

You'd be amazed at how often GarageJournal is brought up in Snap-On...

The average Joe never heard of Snap On. Only tool ethusiast know about Snap On. If the tool ethusiat can not read that huge "DAYTONA" label on the jack and bought it thinking it is a Snap On, then he/she deserve it.

If Snap On is reading this........Quit importing cheap **** and selling it for a premium. If you insist on importing cheap ****, don't get butthurt when others sell the same (or similar) cheap **** for what it's actually worth. People pay Snap On prices expecting above average quality tools, not run of the mill Asian imports.

Old Joe, virtually everyone has heard the name snap on! Now out of curiosity has anyone bought the Daytona jack? Ive only seen bits and pieces of thread.what lil i understand is you fellas think they are made almost identical.i mean with the snap on.it seems like this discussion has been going on for 6 weeks lol.there's a lawsuit.now personally i wouldn't buy anything harbor freight especially a jack unless it was proven to me they had absolutely nothing to do with it.on the other hand i wouldn't buy a jack because it said snap on either!but if the h f jack is proven to be manufactured by an independent maker with equal quality parts and specifications then it would be a good jack.knock on wood i dont plan on needing any jacks as i have milwaukee and Hein Werner.i am curious tho because of all the controversy this unit has stirred up lol.

Good luck to SnapOn with that lawsuit; I doubt they'll get anywhere.

It's a design patent lawsuit, and, as mentioned above, design patents only cover non-functional aspects, like color, styling, and decals. HF just has to show that any look-alike features have a functional purpose.

Fluke's deal on yellow-orange meter boots is a trademark, not a design patent, iirc. Trademarks have different rules.

A few have

Awww man. I just bought mine last Sunday. :(

Picked up a Daytona jack today, the local HF had three in stock. The manager vehemently denied the allegations that it's the same design as Snap-On's jack, but he was probably told to say that by corporate. He did say that HF will not be pulling it from shelves, so I guess they're gonna stand their ground against Snap-On.

Well, thanks to this thread I picked up a Daytona tonight. Funny, the guy at HF brought it up and was saying that it was reverse engineered from SO and a few things were changed...In any event I needed a jack with a higher lift than the one I currently have. I'm just a DIY'er and hope this is the last jack I'll need.

Just picked one up today. Pretty beefy looking unit. Seems bigger in person than in the pictures.

Didn't notice this thread til now. I bought one 2 weeks ago

I bought one that looks like that, but is 3-1/2 ton, from Napa for $249.00 For some reason I'd just trust it more than the HF one.

I have had the same jack for 3 years or so. No issues whatsoever.

Just decided to take a picture of it tonight. If the top of the jack looks a little bigger it's because it knows it's a pretty big deal right now and it went to mr. Jacks head and it swelled a little

At work we got a new oil drainer from Lincoln, it looks smaller & cheaper then mine, a different model # which I bought 20yrs ago. Come to find out that it's part of Lincoln's budget line which looks a lot like the HF drainer. Most likely they come out of the same factory.

Snap-On is one of the most recognized trademarks on the planet.

I think you'd be amazed at the name recognition Snap-On has. I've had all manner of independent polling company statistics, can't remember exact numbers, but it's a well-recognized trademark/name.

Apple is a well recognized brand. Even the average Joe know about it. Not Snap -On. If I was to walk up to someone on the street and ask if they heard of Snap-On, there is a very high chance they never heard of it. SO is only well recognized in the tool community. Does the average Joe even seen a SO commercial?

You'd be surprised. Even my family that has nothing to do with tools or anything knows what snapon is. Why do you think it's always priced high at yard sales or anything? Oh it's snapon must be expensive..

You got to be kidding. On a global scale it essentially is completely unknown.

Is it just me or does that Daytona look like a solid step up from everything else on that Display? Devil is always in the details but it looks like someone put some design effort into that Jack. Maybe it was Snap On :lol:

It is a step up. A substantial one and they know it. Hence the 3 year warranty and the fact it's over $100 more than any other jack they sell

No way hombre.

Half the population is women. And (generally speaking) they could care less about tools.

Half the population is men. Half of those don't care about tools either.

So you're at 25% BEST case scenario. Now you can't tell me 3rd world countries care about fancy tools. So realistically we're talking 7% of the population even care about Snap-On.

McDonalds? Nike? Google? You really think Snap-On hangs with the big boys? REALLY?

I'm toying with the idea of Powder Coating mine in an SK "theme". I wonder if it's illegal as long as I don't sell it.

Geez... You kids will argue about anything. I have No dog in this fight, but Regardless of what you think about Snap on or there business, there products aren't being purchased to be used 10 times a year. This thread reminds me of the Arcan thread, all kinds of hype on a New product that has yet to be proven. I just wish I was smart enough and had the financial means to introduce a New low profile jack every 6 mos. Hell I could make a fortune off Green, Pink on Mother's Day etc... Until someone tears into the jacks and compares components, NOBODY here knows if they are the same, Yes the hydraulic delivery system is the same as I've already stated that the Daytona uses the same pump as the $100 dollar HF low profile, only difference is the seals "allegedly" used.

I notice some differences between the two. Anyone else? The design where the rear casters are mounted. The side plates on the Snap On look thicker in the back near piston. I mean, has anyone ever thought maybe HF is designing their stuff like this on purpose to get people like us thinking they are the same??
